Deuteronomy 1
1 These ben the wordis whiche Moyses spak to al Israel ouer Jordan, in the wildirnesse of the feeld, ayens the reed see, bitwix Pharan and Tophel and Laban and Asseroth, where is ful myche gold,
Ce sont là les paroles que Moïse adressa à tout Israël en deçà du Jourdain, dans le désert, dans la plaine en face de Souf, entre Pharan et Tofel, Labân, Hacéroth et Di-Zahab.
2 by enleuene daies fro Oreb bi the weie of the hil of Seir, til to Cades Barne.
Il y a onze journées depuis le Horeb, en passant par le mont Séir, jusqu’à Kadéch-Barnéa.
3 In the fortithe yeer, in the enleuenth monethe, in the firste dai of the monethe, Moises spak to the sones of Israel alle thingis whiche the Lord commandide to hym that he schulde seie to hem,
Or, ce fut dans la quarantième année, le onzième mois, le premier jour du mois, que Moïse redit aux enfants d’Israël tout ce que l’Éternel lui avait ordonné à leur égard.
4 after that he smoot Seon, kyng of Ammorreis, that dwellide in Esebon, and Og, the kyng of Basan, that dwelide in Asseroth and in Edray, ouer Jordan, in the lond of Moab.
Après avoir défait Sihon, roi des Amorréens, qui résidait à Hesbon, et Og, roi du Basan, qui résidait à Astaroth et à Edréi;
5 And Moyses bigan to declare the lawe, and to seie,
en deçà du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, Moïse se mit en devoir d’exposer cette doctrine, et il dit:
6 Oure Lord God spak to vs in Oreb, and seide, It suffisith to you that ye han dwellid in this hil;
"L’Éternel notre Dieu nous avait parlé au Horeb en ces termes: "Assez longtemps vous avez demeuré dans cette montagne.
7 turne ye ayen, and come ye to the hil of Amorreis, and to othere placis that ben next it; to places of feeldis, and of hillis, and to lowere places ayens the south, and bisidis the brenke of the see, to the lond of Cananeys, and of Liban, `til to the greet flood Eufrates.
Partez, poursuivez votre marche, dirigez-vous vers les monts amorréens et les contrées voisines, vers la plaine, la montagne, la vallée, la région méridionale, les côtes de la mer, le pays des Cananéens et le Liban, jusqu’au grand fleuve, le fleuve d’Euphrate.
8 Lo, `he seith, Y haue youe to you; entre ye, and `welde ye `that lond on which the Lord swoor to youre fadrys, Abraham, Ysaac, and Jacob, that he schulde yyue it to hem, and to her seed after hem.
Voyez, je vous livre ce pays! Allez prendre possession du pays que l’Éternel a juré à vos pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, de donner à eux et à leur postérité après eux."
9 And Y seide to you in that time, Y may not aloone susteyne you, for youre Lord God hath multiplied you,
Dans ce temps-là, je vous parlai ainsi: "Je ne puis assumer, moi seul, votre charge.
10 and ye ben ful many to dai, as the sterris of heuene;
L’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous a fait multiplier, et vous voilà, aujourd’hui, nombreux comme les étoiles du ciel.
11 the Lord God of youre fadris adde to this noumbre many thousyndis, and blesse you, as he spak.
Veuille l’Éternel, Dieu de vos pères, vous rendre mille fois plus nombreux encore et vous bénir comme il vous l’a promis!
12 Y may not aloone susteyne youre causis, and birthun, and stryues; yyue ye of you men wise `in dyuyn thingis,
Comment donc supporterais-je seul votre labeur, et votre fardeau, et vos contestations!
13 and witti `in mennus thingis worthi to be don, whose conuersacioun is preued in youre lynagis, that Y sette hem princes to you.
Choisissez parmi vous, dans vos tribus, des hommes sages, judicieux et éprouvés; je les établirai vos chefs."
14 Thanne ye answeriden to me, The thing is good which thou wolt do.
Vous me répondîtes en disant: "Ce que tu conseilles de faire est excellent."
15 And Y took of youre lynagis men wise and noble, `in vertues and kyn; and Y ordeynede hem princis, tribunes, and centuryouns, and quynquagenaries, and denys, whiche schulden teche you all thingis.
Et je désignai les principaux de vos tribus, hommes sages et éprouvés, et je vous les donnai pour chefs, soit commandants de chiliades, de centuries, de cinquantaines et de dizaines, soit commissaires de vos tribus.
16 And Y comaundide to hem, and seide, Here ye hem, and deme ye that that is iust, whether he be a citeseyn, whether a pilgrym.
Je donnai alors à vos juges les instructions suivantes: "Ecoutez également tous vos frères et prononcez équitablement, entre chacun et son frère, entre chacun et l’étranger.
17 No difference schal be of persones; ye schulen here so a litil man, `that is, pore, as a greet man, nether ye schulen take the persoone of ony man, for it is the doom of God. That if ony thing semeth hard to you, telle ye to me, and Y schal here.
Ne faites point, en justice, acception de personnes; donnez audience au petit comme au grand, ne craignez qui que ce soit, car la justice est à Dieu! Que si une affaire est trop difficile pour vous, déférez-la moi et j’en prendrai connaissance."
18 And Y comaundide alle thingis whiche ye ouyten to do.
Et je vous prescrivis, dans ce même temps, tout ce que vous aviez à observer.
19 Forsothe we yeden forth fro Oreb, and passiden bi a feerdful deseert, and grettiste wildirnesse, which ye sien, bi the weye of the hil of Ammorrey, as oure Lord God comaundide to vs. And whanne we hadden come in to Cades Barne,
Nous partîmes du Horeb, nous traversâmes tout ce long et redoutable désert que vous savez, nous dirigeant vers les monts amorréens, comme l’Éternel notre Dieu nous l’avait prescrit, et nous atteignîmes Kadêch-Barnéa.
20 Y seide to you, Ye ben comen to the hil of Ammorrey, which youre Lord God schal yyue to you;
Et je vous dis: "Vous voici arrivés au pied des monts amorréens, que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.
21 se thou the lond which thi Lord God schal yyue to thee; `stie thou, and welde it, as oure Lord God spak to thi fadris; `nyle thou drede, nether `drede thou in herte ony thing.
Regarde! L’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a livré ce pays; va, prends-en possession, comme te l’a dit l’Éternel, Dieu de tes pères; sois sans peur et sans faiblesse!"
22 And alle ye neiyiden to me, and ye seiden, Sende we men, that schulen biholde the lond, and telle to vs bi what weye we owen stie, and to whiche citees we owen to go.
Mais vous vîntes vers moi, tous, en disant: "Nous voudrions envoyer quelques hommes en avant, qui exploreraient pour nous ce pays et qui nous renseigneraient sur le chemin que nous devons suivre et sur les villes où nous devons aller."
23 And whanne the word pleside to me, Y sente of you twelue men, of ech lynage oon.
La proposition me plut, et je choisis parmi vous douze hommes, un homme par tribu.
24 And whanne thei hadden go, and hadden stied in to the hilli places, thei camen `til to the valei of Clustre; and whanne thei hadden biholde the lond,
Ils partirent, s’avancèrent sur la montagne, atteignirent la vallée d’Echkol, et explorèrent cette contrée.
25 thei token of the fruytis therof, to schewe the plentee, and brouyten `to vs, and seiden, The lond is good which oure Lord God schal yyue to vs.
Puis ils prirent de ses fruits, qu’ils nous apportèrent, et nous rendirent compte en disant: "Il est bon, le pays que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne."
26 And ye `nolden stie, but ye weren vnbileueful to the word of oure Lord God.
Mais vous refusâtes d’y monter, désobéissant ainsi à la voix de l’Éternel, votre Dieu;
27 And ye grutchiden in youre tabernaclis, and ye seiden, The Lord hatith vs, and herfor he ledde vs out of the lond of Egipt, that he schulde bitake vs in the hond of Ammorey, and schulde do awei vs.
et vous murmurâtes dans vos tentes et vous dîtes: "C’Est par haine pour nous que l’Éternel nous a fait sortir de l’Egypte! C’Est pour nous livrer au pouvoir de l’Amorréen, pour nous anéantir!
28 Whidur schulen we stie? the messangeris maden aferd oure herte, and seiden, A grettiste multitude is, and largere in stature than we; the citees ben greete, and wallid `til to the heuene; we sien there the sones of Enachym, that is, giauntis.
Où veut-on que nous allions? Nos frères ont abattu notre courage, en disant: Il y a là une race plus grande et plus forte que la nôtre, des villes considérables et fortifiées jusqu’au ciel, et nous y avons même vu des enfants d’Anak."
29 And Y seide to you, `Nyle ye drede `with ynne, nether `drede withoutforth; the Lord God hym silf,
Et je vous répondis: "Vous n’avez pas à trembler ni à les craindre.
30 which is youre ledere, schal fiyte for you, as he dide in Egipt, while alle men sien.
L’Éternel, votre Dieu, qui marche à votre tête, lui-même combattra pour vous, tout comme il l’a fait contre l’Egypte, sous vos yeux,
31 And ye sien in the wildirnesse, thi Lord God bar thee, as a man is wont to bere his litil sone, in al the weie bi which ye yeden til ye camen to this place.
et aussi dans ce désert, où tu as vu l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te porter comme un père porte son fils, durant tout le trajet que vous avez fait, jusqu’à votre arrivée en ce lieu-ci.
32 And sotheli nether so ye bileueden to youre Lord God, that yede bifor you in the weie,
Et dans cette circonstance vous ne vous confieriez pas en l’Éternel, votre Dieu!
33 and mesuride the place in which ye ouyten to sette tentis, and schewide in nyyt the weie to you bi fier, and in dai bi a piler of cloude.
Lui qui précède votre marche, choisissant les lieux propices à vos stations, la nuit par le feu, pour vous montrer la route à suivre, et le jour par la nuée!"
34 And whanne the Lord hadde herd the vois of youre wordis, he was wrooth,
L’Éternel entendit vos paroles, et il s’irrita, et il proféra ce serment:
35 and swoor, and seide, Noon of the men of this werste generacioun schal se the good lond, which Y bihiyte vndur an ooth to youre fadris,
"Si jamais un seul de ces hommes, de cette génération mauvaise, voit l’heureux pays que j’ai juré de donner à vos pères!…
36 outakun Caleph, the sone of Jephone; for he schal se it, and Y schal yyue to hym the lond on which he trad, and to hise sones, for he suede the Lord.
Seul, Caleb, fils de Yefounné, le verra; ce sol qu’il a foulé, je le donnerai à lui et à ses enfants, parce qu’il est resté fidèle au Seigneur."
37 Nether the indignacioun ayens the puple is wondirful, sithen the Lord was wrooth also to me for you, and seide,
Contre moi aussi l’Éternel s’irrita à cause de vous, au point de dire: "Tu n’y entreras pas, toi non plus!"
38 Nether thou schalt entre thidur, but Josue, the sone of Nun, thi mynystre, he schal entre for thee; excyte and strengthe thou him, and he schal departe the lond bi lot to Israel.
Josué, fils de Noun, qui est à ton service, c’est lui qui doit y entrer: affermis son courage, car c’est lui qui en donnera possession à Israël.
39 Youre litle children, of whiche ye seiden, that thei schulden be led prisoneris, and the sones that kunnen not to dai the diuersite of good and of yuel, thei schulen entre; and Y schal yyue to hem the lond, and thei schulen welde it.
Et vos familles, dont vous avez dit: "Elles nous seront ravies", et vos enfants, qui ne discernent pas encore le bien du mal, ceux-là entreront dans ce pays; je le leur donnerai à eux et ils le posséderont.
40 Sotheli turne ye ayen, and go ye in to the wildirnesse, bi the weie of the Reed See.
Pour vous, changez de direction et acheminez-vous vers le désert, du côté de la mer des Joncs."
41 And ye answeriden to me, We synneden to the Lord; we schulen stie, and we schulen fiyte, as oure Lord God comaundide. And whanne ye weren arayed with armeris, and yeden `into the hil, the Lord seide to me,
Alors vous vous écriâtes, en me disant: "Nous avons péché contre le Seigneur; nous voulons monter et combattre, comme nous l’a ordonné le Seigneur, notre Dieu." Et chacun de vous ceignit ses armes et vous vous disposâtes à gravir la montagne.
42 Seie thou to hem, `Nyle ye stye, nether fiyte ye, for Y am not with you, lest ye fallen bifor youre enemyes.
Mais l’Éternel me parla ainsi: "Dis-leur: Ne montez pas, ne livrez point de combat, car je ne serai point avec vous; ne vous exposez pas aux coups de vos ennemis."
43 Y spak, and ye herden not; but ye `weren aduersaries to the comaundement of the Lord, and bolnden with prijde, and stieden in to the hil.
Je vous le redis, mais vous n’en tîntes pas compte; vous désobéîtes à la parole du Seigneur et vous eûtes la témérité de vous avancer sur la montagne.
44 Therfor Ammorrey yede out, that dwellide in the hillis, and he cam ayens you, and pursuede you, as bees ben wont to pursue, and killide fro Seir til Horma. And whanne ye turneden ayen,
L’Amorréen, qui occupe cette montagne, marcha à votre rencontre; et ils vous poursuivirent comme font les abeilles, et ils vous taillèrent en pièces dans Séir, jusqu’à Horma.
45 and wepten bifor the Lord, he herde not you, nether wolde asente to youre vois;
De retour, vous pleurâtes devant le Seigneur; mais le Seigneur fut insensible à vos cris, il ne vous écouta point.
46 therfor ye saten in Cades Barne bi myche tyme.
Vous demeurâtes de longs jours à Kadêch… Vous savez combien de jours vous y avez demeuré.
