Acts 17
1 And whanne thei hadden passid bi Amfipolis and Appollonye, thei camen to Thessolonyk, where was a synagoge of Jewis.
Depois que Paulo e Silas passaram pelas cidades de Anfípolis e Apolônia, eles chegaram à Tessalônica, onde havia uma sinagoga judaica.
2 And bi custom Poul entride to hem, and bi thre sabatis he declaride to hem of scripturis,
Como de costume, Paulo entrou na sinagoga e, durante três sábados, conversou com as pessoas que estavam lá sobre as Sagradas Escrituras.
3 and openyde, and schewide that it bihofte Crist to suffre, and rise ayen fro deth, and that this is Jhesus Crist, whom Y telle to you.
Ele explicou o que significam as Sagradas Escrituras, provando que o Messias precisava morrer e ressuscitar dos mortos. Ele disse para as pessoas: “Este Jesus, que eu lhes anuncio, é o Messias.”
4 And summe of hem bileueden, and weren ioyned to Poul and to Silas; and a greet multitude of hethene men worschipide God, and noble wymmen not a fewe.
Alguns deles se convenceram e se uniram a Paulo e Silas, juntamente com muitos seguidores que falavam grego, além de algumas mulheres importantes da cidade.
5 But the Jewis hadden enuye, and token of the comyn puple summe yuele men, and whanne thei hadden maad a cumpenye, thei moueden the citee. And thei camen to Jasouns hous, and souyten hem to brynge forth among the puple.
Mas, os judeus ficaram com inveja e, junto com alguns agitadores que reuniram na praça do mercado, eles formaram um bando. Eles causaram confusão pela cidade e atacaram a casa de Jasão. Eles tentaram encontrar Paulo e Silas, para que pudessem levá-los para o meio da multidão.
6 And whanne thei founden hem not, thei drowen Jasoun and summe britheren to the princis of the citee, and crieden, That these it ben, that mouen the world, and hidir thei camen,
Como não os encontraram, eles arrastaram Jasão e alguns outros seguidores de Jesus para apresentá-los aos líderes da cidade, gritando: “Estas pessoas são conhecidas por causar problemas, virando o mundo de cabeça para baixo. Agora, eles vieram para cá,
7 whiche Jason resseyuede. And these alle don ayens the maundementis of the emperour, and seien, that Jhesu is anothir king.
e Jasão os recebeu em sua casa. Todos eles desobedecem às leis do imperador romano, cometendo traição ao dizerem que há outro rei, chamado Jesus.”
8 And thei moueden the puple, and the princis of the citee, herynge these thingis.
As pessoas e os líderes da cidade ficaram muito perturbados ao ouvirem isso.
9 And whanne satisfaccioun was takun of Jason, and of othere, thei leten Poul and Silas go.
Então, fizeram Jasão e os outros pagarem fiança para serem soltos.
10 And anoon bi niyt britheren leten Silas go in to Beroan. And whanne thei camen thidur, thei entriden in to the synagoge of the Jewis.
Os irmãos fizeram com que Paulo e Silas fossem para Bereia naquela mesma noite. Ao chegarem em Bereia, eles foram para a sinagoga judaica.
11 But these weren the worthier of hem that ben at Thessolonik, whiche resseyueden the word with al desire, eche dai sekinge scripturis, if these thingis hadden hem so.
As pessoas de lá eram mais bem educadas do que as de Tessalônica e, com isso, elas aceitaram a palavra de Deus com muito interesse. Todos os dias, liam as Sagradas Escrituras, para garantir que o que ouviam era o certo.
12 And manye of hem bileueden and of hethen wymmen onest and men not a fewe.
Assim, muitas delas se tornaram irmãos de fé, juntamente com algumas mulheres e homens gregos de elevada posição social.
13 But whanne the Jewis in Tessalonyk hadden knowe, that also at Bero the word of God was prechid of Poul, thei camen thidir, mouynge and disturblynge the multitude.
Mas, quando os judeus em Tessalônica ouviram dizer que Paulo também estava anunciando a palavra de Deus em Bereia, eles foram para lá e incitaram o povo contra eles.
14 And tho anoon britheren delyuerden Poul, that he schulde go to the see; but Sylas and Tymothe dwelten there.
Imediatamente, os seguidores enviaram Paulo para o litoral, enquanto Silas e Timóteo ficaram em Bereia.
15 And thei that ledden forth Poul, ledden hym to Atenes. And whanne thei hadden take maundement of him to Silas and to Tymothe, that ful hiyyngli thei schulden come to hym, thei wenten forth.
Os que estavam acompanhando Paulo levaram-no para Atenas. Depois, retornaram para Bereia, com orientações de Paulo para Silas e Timóteo se unirem a ele o mais depressa possível.
16 And while Poul abood hem at Atenys, his spirit was moued in him, for he saiy the citee youun to ydolatrie.
Enquanto Paulo estava esperando pelos seus companheiros em Atenas, ele ficou muito perturbado por ver tantos ídolos serem adorados na cidade.
17 Therfor he disputide in the synagoge with the Jewis, and with men that worschipiden God, and in the dom place, by alle daies to hem that herden.
Ele falou na sinagoga com os judeus e com não-judeus que louvavam a Deus, assim como na praça do mercado com as pessoas que ele encontrava diariamente.
18 And summe Epeicureis, and Stoisens, and filosofris disputiden with hym. And summe seiden, What wole this sowere of wordis seie? And othere seiden, He semeth to be a tellere of newe fendis; for he telde to hem Jhesu, and the ayenrisyng.
Alguns filósofos epicureus e estoicos também discutiam com ele. Eles perguntavam: “Sobre o que ele está falando?” Outros concluíam: “Ele parece estar ensinando sobre alguns deuses estrangeiros.” Diziam isso porque Paulo estava falando sobre Jesus e sobre a ressurreição.
19 And thei token, and ledden hym to Ariopage, and seide, Moun we wite, what is this newe doctryne, that is seid of thee?
Então, eles o levaram ao Areópago e lhe disseram: “Por favor, diga para nós sobre estes novos ensinamentos que você está promovendo.
20 For thou bringist ynne summe newe thingis to oure eeris; therfor we wolen wite, what these thingis wolen be.
Nós ouvimos você falar a respeito de coisas que não conhecemos. Então, gostaríamos de tentar entendê-las.”
21 For alle men of Athenys and comlingis herborid yauen tent to noon other thing, but ether to seie, ethir to here, sum newe thing.
(Todos os atenienses, incluindo os estrangeiros que moravam lá, gostavam de passar o tempo contando e ouvindo as últimas novidades.)
22 And Poul stood in the myddil of Ariopage, and seide, Men of Athenys, bi alle thingis Y se you as veyn worschipers.
Paulo ficou em pé no meio do Areópago e disse: “Povo de Atenas! Observei que vocês são muito religiosos.
23 For Y passide, and siy youre maumetis, and foond an auter, in which was writun, To the vnknowun God. Therfor which thing ye vnknowynge worschipen, this thing Y schew to you.
Andando pela cidade, observando os seus santuários, encontrei um altar em que está escrito: ‘Ao Deus Desconhecido.’ Este Deus desconhecido, a quem vocês adoram sem conhecer, é aquele que estou anunciando a vocês.
24 God that made the world and alle thingis that ben in it, this, for he is Lord of heuene and of erthe, dwellith not in templis maad with hoond,
O Deus que criou o mundo e tudo que há nele; o Senhor do céu e da terra, que não vive em templos feitos por mãos de seres humanos.
25 nethir is worschipid bi mannus hoondis, nether hath nede of ony thing, for he yyueth lijf to alle men, and brethinge, and alle thingis;
Ele não precisa ser servido por nós, como se precisasse de algo, pois ele é a fonte de toda a vida para cada ser vivo.
26 and made of oon al the kinde of men to enhabite on al the face of the erthe, determynynge tymes ordeyned, and termes of the dwellynge of hem,
A partir de um só homem, ele criou todos os povos que vivem na terra e decidiu previamente quando e onde eles deveriam viver.
27 to seke God, if perauenture thei felen hym, ether fynden, thouy he be not fer fro eche of you.
O propósito de Deus era que todos o buscassem e, talvez, conseguissem encontrá-lo, embora ele não esteja longe de qualquer um de nós.
28 For in hym we lyuen, and mouen, and ben. As also summe of youre poetis seiden, And we ben also the kynde of hym.
Nele nós vivemos, nos movemos e existimos. Exatamente como um dos seus poetas escreveu: ‘Nós somos seus filhos.’
29 Therfor sithen we ben the kynde of God, we schulen not deme, that godli thing is lijk gold, and siluer, ethir stoon, ethir to grauyng of craft and thouyt of man.
E, já que somos seus filhos, nós não deveríamos pensar que Deus é como ídolos de ouro, de prata ou de pedra, que são moldados pelo talento e pela imaginação do ser humano.
30 For God dispisith the tymes of this vnkunnyng, and now schewith to men, that alle euery where doon penaunce; for that he hath ordeyned a dai,
Deus não levou em conta a ignorância humana no passado, mas agora ele ordena que todos, em qualquer lugar, se arrependam dos seus pecados.
31 in which he schal deme the world in equite, in a man in which he ordeynede, and yaf feith to alle men, and reiside hym fro deth.
Pois ele determinou um dia em que irá julgar o mundo com justiça, por meio do homem que ele escolheu. E ele provou para todos quem é o escolhido, ao ressuscitá-lo dos mortos.”
32 And whanne thei hadden herd the ayenrysing of deed men, summe scorneden, and summe seiden, We schulen here thee eft of this thing.
Alguns deles riram ao ouvirem sobre a ressurreição dos mortos, enquanto outros disseram: “Por favor, volte mais tarde para que possamos ouvir mais a respeito disso.”
33 So Poul wente out of the myddil of hem.
Então, Paulo os deixou.
34 But summen drowen to hym, and bileueden. Among whiche Dynyse Aropagite was, and a womman, bi name Damaris, and othere men with hem.
Alguns poucos homens se juntaram a ele e creram em Deus, incluindo Dionísio, um membro do Areópago, e também uma mulher, chamada Dâmaris, e algumas outras pessoas.
