2 Samuel 10
1 Forsothe it was doon aftir these thingis, that Naas, kyng of the sones of Amon, diede; and Anoon, his sone, regnede for hym. And Dauid seide,
Or, il arriva après cela que le roi des enfants d’Ammon mourut, et Hanon, son fils, régna en sa place.
2 Y schal do mercy with Anon, the sone of Naas, as his fadir dide mercy with me. Therfor Dauid sente coumfortynge hym by hise seruauntis on the deeth of the fadir. Sotheli whanne the seruauntis of Dauid hadden come in to the lond of the sones of Amon,
Et David dit: Je ferai miséricorde à Hanon, fils de Naas, comme son père m’a fait miséricorde. David envoya donc, le consolant par ses serviteurs de la mort de son père. Mais lorsque les serviteurs de David furent venus dans la terre des enfants d’Ammon,
3 princes of the sones of Amon seiden to Anon, her lord, Gessist thou that for the onour of thi fadir Dauid sente coumfortouris to thee; and not herfor Dauid sente hise seruauntis to thee, that he schulde aspie, and enserche the citee, and distrie it?
Les princes des enfants d’Ammon dirent à Hanon leur seigneur: Pensez-vous que ce soit pour l’honneur de votre père, que David vous ait envoyé des consolateurs, et que ce ne soit pas pour s’enquérir de la ville, l’explorer et la détruire, que David a envoyé ses serviteurs vers vous?
4 Therfor Anoon took the seruauntis of Dauid, and schauyde half the part of `the beerd of hem, and he kittide awey the myddil clothis of hem `til to the buttokis; and lefte hem.
C’est pourquoi Hanon prit les serviteurs de David, rasa la moitié de leur barbe, coupa la moitié de leurs vêtements jusqu’au haut des cuisses, et les renvoya.
5 And whanne this was teld to Dauid, he sente in to the comyng of hem, for the men weren schent ful vilensly. And Dauid comaundide to hem, Dwelle ye in Jerico, til youre beerd wexe, and thanne turne ye ayen.
Lorsque cela eut été annoncé à David, il envoya au-devant d’eux; car ces hommes étaient très honteusement confus, et David leur manda: Demeurez à Jéricho jusqu’à ce que votre barbe croisse, et alors revenez.
6 Sotheli the sones of Amon sien, that thei hadden do wrong to Dauid, and thei senten, and hiriden bi meede Roob of Sirye, and Soba of Sirie, twenti thousynde of foot men, and of kyng Maacha, a thousynde men, and of Istob twelue thousynde of men.
Mais les enfants d’Ammon, voyant qu’ils avaient fait injure à David, envoyèrent prendre à leur solde des Syriens de Rohob, et des Syriens de Soba, vingt mille hommes de pied, mille du roi de Maacha, et douze mille d’Istob.
7 And whanne Dauid hadde herd this, he sent Joab and al the oost of fiyteris.
Ce qu’ayant appris David, il envoya Joab et toute l’armée de ses guerriers.
8 Therfor the sones of Amon yeden out, and dressiden scheltrun bifor hem in the entryng of the yate. Forsothe Soba, and Roob of Sirie, and Istob, and Maacha weren asidis half in the feeld.
Les enfants d’Ammon sortirent donc, et rangèrent leur armée en bataille devant l’entrée même de la porte, mais les Syriens de Soba et de Rohob, d’Istob et de Maacha, étaient séparément dans la plaine.
9 Therfor Joab siy, that batel was maad redi ayens hym, bothe euene ayens and bihynde the bak; and he chees to hym silf of alle the chosun men of Israel, and ordeynede scheltrun ayens Sirus.
Joab donc, voyant que la bataille était préparée contre lui et par devant et par derrière, prit de toute l’élite d’Israël, et rangea son armée en bataille contre les Syriens;
10 Forsothe he bitook to Abisai, his brothir, the tother part of the puple, which dresside scheltrun ayens the sones of Amon.
Mais le reste du peuple, il le confia à Abisaï son frère, qui le rangea en bataille contre les enfants d’Ammon.
11 And Joab seide, If men of Sirie han the maistrie ayens me, thou schalt be to me in to help; sotheli if the sones of Amon han the maistrie ayens thee, Y schal helpe thee;
Et Joab dit: Si les Syriens prévalent contre moi, tu me seras en aide; mais si les enfants d’Ammon prévalent contre toi, je te secourrai.
12 be thou a strong man, and fiyte we for oure puple, and for the citee of oure God; forsothe the Lord schal do that, that is good in his siyt.
Sois homme courageux, et combattons pour notre peuple, et la cité de notre Dieu: mais le Seigneur fera ce qui est bon à ses yeux.
13 Therfor Joab and his puple that was with hym, bigan batel ayens men of Sirie, whiche fledden anoon fro his face.
C’est pourquoi Joab et le peuple qui était avec lui engagèrent le combat contre les Syriens, qui aussitôt s’enfuirent devant lui.
14 Forsothe the sones of Amon sien, that men of Sirie hadden fled; and thei fledden also fro the face of Abisai, and entriden in to the citee; and Joab turnede ayen fro the sones of Amon, and cam in to Jerusalem.
Mais les enfants d’Ammon voyant que les Syriens avaient fui, s’enfuirent aussi eux-mêmes devant Abisaï, et ils entrèrent dans la ville; et Joab s’en retourna après la défaite des enfants d’Ammon, et vint à Jérusalem.
15 Forsothe men of Sirye sien that thei hadden feld bifor Israel, and thei weren gaderid to gidere.
Les Syriens donc, voyant qu’ils avaient succombé devant Israël, s’assemblèrent tous.
16 And Adadezer sente, and ledde out men of Sirie that weren biyende the flood, and he brouyte the oost of hem; sotheli Sobach, mayster of the chyualrie of Adadezer, was the prince of hem.
Et Adarézer envoya pour faire venir les Syriens, qui étaient au-delà du fleuve, et il amena leur armée; or, Sobach, maître de la milice d’Adarézer, était leur prince.
17 And whanne this was teld to Dauid, he drow togidere al Israel, and passide Jordan, and cam in to Helama. And men of Sirie dressiden scheltrun ayens Dauid, and fouyten ayens hym.
Lorsque cela eut été annoncé à David, il réunit tout Israël, passa le Jourdain, et vint à Hélam; et les Syriens rangèrent leur armée en bataille contre David, et combattirent contre lui.
18 And Sireis fledden fro the face of Israel; and Dauid killide of Sireis seuene hundrid charis, and fourti thousynde of knyytis; and he smoot Sobach, the prince of chyualrie, which was deed anoon.
Et les Syriens s’enfuirent devant Israël, et David tua des Syriens sept cents hommes qui étaient sur les chariots, et quarante mille cavaliers; et il frappa Sobach, prince de la milice, lequel mourut sur-le-champ.
19 Forsothe alle kyngis, that weren in the help of Adadezer, siyen that thei weren ouercomun of Israel, and thei maden pees with Israel, and serueden hem; and Sireis dredden to yyue help to the sones of Amon.
Or, tous les rois qui étaient venus au secours d’Adarézer, voyant qu’ils étaient vaincus par Israël, furent épouvantés, et cinquante-huit mille hommes s’enfuirent devant Israël. Et ils firent la paix avec Israël, et ils les servirent; et les Syriens craignirent de donner encore secours aux enfants d’Ammon.
