1 Samuel 4
1 And it was doon in tho daies Filisteis camen to gidere in to batel; for Israel yede out ayens Filisteis in to batel, and settiden tentis bisidis the stoon of help. Forsothe Filisteis camen in to Aphet,
Et ce que Samuel avait dit arriva à tout Israël. Et Israël sortit en bataille à la rencontre des Philistins, et ils campèrent près d’Ében-Ézer; et les Philistins campèrent à Aphek.
2 and maden redi scheltrun ayens Israel. Sotheli whanne the batel was bigunnun, Israel turned backis to Filisteis; and as foure thousynde of men weren slayn in that batel `euery where bi feeldis;
Et les Philistins se rangèrent en bataille contre Israël; et la bataille devint générale, et Israël fut battu devant les Philistins; et ils frappèrent environ 4 000 hommes en bataille rangée, dans la campagne.
3 and the puple of Israel turnede ayen to tentis. And the grettere men in birthe of Israel seiden, Whi hath the Lord smyte vs to dai bifore Filisteis? Brynge we to vs fro Silo the arke of boond of pees of the Lord, and come it in to the myddis of vs, that it saue vs fro the hond of oure enemyes.
Et le peuple rentra dans le camp, et les anciens d’Israël dirent: Pourquoi l’Éternel nous a-t-il battus aujourd’hui devant les Philistins? Prenons à nous, de Silo, l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel, et qu’elle vienne au milieu de nous et nous sauve de la main de nos ennemis.
4 Therfor the puple sente in to Silo, and thei token fro thennus the arke of boond of pees of the Lord of oostis, `that sat on cherubyn. And Ophym and Fynees, twei sones of Heli, weren with the arke of boond of pees of the Lord.
Et le peuple envoya à Silo, et on apporta de là l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel des armées, qui siège entre les chérubins; et les deux fils d’Éli, Hophni et Phinées, étaient là avec l’arche de l’alliance de Dieu.
5 And whanne the arke of boond of pees of the Lord hadde come in to the castels, al Israel criede with grete cry, and the erthe sownede.
Et aussitôt que l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel entra dans le camp, tout Israël se mit à pousser de grands cris, de sorte que la terre en frémit.
6 And Filisteis herden the vois of cry, and seiden, What is this vois of greet cry in the castels of Ebrews? And thei knewen, that the arke of boond of pees of the Lord hadde come in to castels.
Et les Philistins entendirent le bruit des cris, et dirent: Quel est ce bruit de grands cris dans le camp des Hébreux? Et ils surent que l’arche de l’Éternel était venue dans le camp.
7 And Filisteis dredden, and seiden, God is come in to `the castels; and thei weiliden, and seiden, Wo to vs!
Et les Philistins craignirent, car ils dirent: Dieu est venu dans le camp. Et ils dirent: Malheur à nous! car il n’en a jamais été ainsi auparavant.
8 for so greet ful ioiyng was not yistirdai, and the thridde day passid; wo to vs! who schal kepe vs fro the hond of `these hiye goddis? these ben the goddis, that smytiden Egipt with al veniaunce in deseert.
Malheur à nous! Qui nous délivrera de la main de ces dieux puissants? Ce sont là les dieux qui ont frappé les Égyptiens de toutes sortes de plaies dans le désert.
9 Filisteis, be ye coumfortid, and be ye men, serue ye not Ebrews, as thei serueden vs; be ye coumfortid, and fiyte ye.
Philistins, fortifiez-vous et soyez hommes, de peur que vous ne soyez asservis aux Hébreux, comme ils vous ont été asservis! Soyez hommes, et combattez!
10 Therfor Filisteis fouyten, and Israel was slayn, and ech man flei in to his tabernacle; and a ful greet veniaunce was maad, and thretti thousynde of foot men of Israel felden doun.
Et les Philistins combattirent, et Israël fut battu; et ils s’enfuirent chacun à sa tente; et la défaite fut très grande, et il tomba d’Israël 30 000 hommes de pied.
11 And the arke of God was takun; and, twei sones of Heli, Ophym and Fynees, weren deed.
Et l’arche de Dieu fut prise, et les deux fils d’Éli, Hophni et Phinées, moururent.
12 Sotheli a man of Beniamyn ran fro the scheltrun, and cam in to Silo in that dai, with his cloth torent and his heed bispreynt with dust; and whanne he was comen,
Et un homme de Benjamin courut de la bataille, et vint à Silo ce même jour, ayant ses vêtements déchirés, et de la terre sur sa tête.
13 Heli sat `on an hiye seete, `and bihelde ayens the weie; for his herte was dredyng for the arke of the Lord. Sotheli aftir that thilke man entride, he telde to the citee, and al the citee yellide.
Et il entra, et voici, Éli était assis sur un siège, aux aguets, à côté du chemin; car son cœur tremblait pour l’arche de Dieu. Et l’homme entra pour annoncer dans la ville [ce qui était arrivé]; et toute la ville jeta des cris.
14 And Heli herde the soun of cry, and seide, What is this sown of this noise? And he hastide, and cam, and telde to Heli.
Et Éli entendit le bruit des cris, et dit: Qu’est-ce que ce bruit de tumulte? Et l’homme vint en hâte et informa Éli.
15 Forsothe Heli was of foure score yeer and eiytene, and hise iyen dasiwiden, and he myyte not se.
Or Éli était âgé de 98 ans, et il avait les yeux fixes et il ne pouvait voir.
16 And he seide to Heli, Y am that cam fro batel, and Y am that flei to dai fro the scheltrun. To whom Ely seide, My sone, what is doon?
Et l’homme dit à Éli: Je viens de la bataille, et je me suis enfui de la bataille aujourd’hui. Et [Éli] dit: Qu’est-il arrivé, mon fils?
17 Forsothe he that telde answeride, and seide, Israel flei bifor Filisteis, and a greet fal is maad in the puple; ferthermore and thi twey sones, Ophym and Fynees, ben deed, and the arke of God is takun.
Et celui qui portait le message répondit et dit: Israël a fui devant les Philistins, et même il y a eu une grande défaite du peuple, et aussi tes deux fils, Hophni et Phinées, sont morts, et l’arche de Dieu est prise.
18 And whanne he hadde nemyd the arke of God, Hely felde fro `the hiye seete bacward bisidis the dore, and `was deed; for the nollis weren brokun. For he was an eld man, and of greet age; and he demyde Israel bi fourti yeer.
Et il arriva que, lorsqu’il mentionna l’arche de Dieu, [Éli] tomba à la renverse de dessus son siège, à côté de la porte, et se brisa la nuque et mourut; car c’était un homme âgé et pesant. Et il avait jugé Israël 40 ans.
19 Forsothe his douyter in lawe, `the wijf of Finees, was with childe, and niy the child bering; and whanne `the message was herd that the arke of God was takun, and that hir fadir in lawe was deed, and hir hosebonde, sche bowide hir silf, and childide; for sodeyn sorewis felden in to hir.
Et sa belle-fille, femme de Phinées, était enceinte, près d’accoucher; et elle entendit la nouvelle que l’arche de Dieu était prise, et que son beau-père et son mari étaient morts, et elle se courba et enfanta, car les douleurs la surprirent.
20 Sotheli in that moment of hir deeth, wymmen that stoden aboute hir, seiden to hir, Drede thou not, for thou hast childid a sone. And sche answeride not to hem, for nether `sche perseyuede.
Et comme elle se mourait, celles qui se tenaient auprès d’elle [lui] dirent: Ne crains point, car tu as enfanté un fils. Et elle ne répondit pas et n’y fit pas attention;
21 And sche clepide the child Ichaboth, and seide, The glorie of the Lord is translatid fro Israel, for the arke of God is takun; and for hir fadir in lawe and for hir hosebonde sche seide,
et elle appela l’enfant I-Cabod, disant: La gloire s’en est allée d’Israël; – parce que l’arche de Dieu était prise, et à cause de son beau-père et de son mari.
22 The glorie of God is translatid fro Israel, for the arke of God is takun.
Et elle dit: La gloire s’en est allée d’Israël, car l’arche de Dieu est prise.
