1 Samuel 24
1 And whanne Saul turnede ayen, aftir that he pursuede Filisteis, thei telden to hym, and seiden, Lo! Dauid is in the deseert of Engaddi.
Lorsque Saül fut revenu de la poursuite des Philistins, on vint lui dire: « Voici que David est au désert d’Engaddi. »
2 Therfor Saul took three thousinde of chosun men of al Israel, and yede to seke Dauid and hise men, yhe on moost brokun rochis, that ben `able to weie to wield geet aloone.
Saül prit trois mille hommes d’élite d’entre tout Israël, et il alla à la recherche de David et de ses gens jusque sur les rochers des boucs sauvages.
3 And he cam to the fooldis of scheep, that offriden hem silf to the wei goere. And there was a denne, in to which denne Saul entride, that he schulde purge the wombe; forsothe Dauid and hise men weren hid in the ynnere part of the denne.
Il arriva aux parcs des brebis qui étaient près du chemin; il y avait là une caverne, où Saül entra pour se couvrir les pieds; et David et ses gens étaient assis au fond de la caverne.
4 And the seruauntis of Dauid seiden to hym, Lo! the dai of which the Lord spak to the, Y schal bitake to thee thin enemy, that thou do to hym as it plesith in thin iyen. Therfor Dauid roos, and kittide the hemme of the mentil of Saul priuely.
Les hommes de David lui dirent: « Voici le jour dont Yahweh t’a dit: Voici que je livre ton ennemi entre tes mains; traite-le comme il te plaira. » David se leva et coupa à la dérobée le pan du manteau de Saül.
5 Aftir these thingis Dauid smoot his herte, for he hadde kit awei the hemme of the mentil of Saul.
Après cela, le cœur de David lui battit, de ce qu’il avait coupé le pan du manteau de Saül.
6 And Dauid seide to hise men, The Lord be merciful to me, lest Y do this thing to my lord, the crist of the Lord, that Y sende myn hond `in to hym, for he is the crist of the Lord. The Lord lyueth, for no but the Lord smyte hym, ether his dai come, that he die, ether he go doun in to batel and perische, the Lord be merciful to me, that Y sende not myn hond in to the crist of the Lord.
Et il dit à ses hommes: « Que Yahweh me préserve de faire contre mon seigneur, l’oint de Yahweh, une chose telle que de porter ma main sur lui, car il est l’oint de Yahweh! »
7 Forsothe Saul roos out of the denne, and yede in the weie bigunnun.
Par ses paroles, David réprima ses hommes et ne leur permit pas de se jeter sur Saül. Saül s’étant levé pour sortir de la caverne continua sa route.
8 Sotheli Dauid roos aftir hym, and he yede out of the denne, and criede aftir the bak of Saul, and seide, My lord, the kyng! And Saul bihelde bihinde him silf; and Dauid bowide hym silf lowe to the erthe, and worschipide.
Après cela David se leva et, sortant de la caverne, il se mit à crier après Saül en disant: « Ô roi, mon seigneur! » Saül regarda derrière lui, et David s’inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna.
9 And he seide to Saul, Whi herist thou the wordis of men spekynge, Dauid sekith yuel ayens thee?
Et David dit à Saül: « Pourquoi écoutes-tu les propos de gens qui disent: Voici que David cherche à te faire du mal?
10 Lo! to dai thin iyen siyen, that the Lord bitook thee in myn hond in the denne, and Y thouyte that Y wolde sle thee, but myn iye sparide thee; for Y seide, Y schal not holde forth myn hond in to my lord, which is the crist, `that is, anoyntid, of the Lord.
Voici qu’aujourd’hui tes yeux ont vu comment Yahweh t’a livré, aujourd’hui même, entre mes mains dans la caverne. On me disait de te tuer; mais mon œil a eu pitié de toi, et j’ai dit: Je ne porterai point ma main sur mon seigneur, car il est l’oint de Yahweh.
11 But rathere, my fadir, se thou, and knowe the hemme of thi mentil in myn hond, for whanne Y kittide aweie the hemme of thi mentil, Y nolde holde forth myn hond in thee; perseyue thou, and see, for nether yuel nether wickidnesse is in myn hond, nether Y synnede ayens thee; but thou aspiest my lijf, that thou do it awei.
Vois donc, mon père, vois dans ma main le pan de ton manteau. Puisque j’ai coupé le pan de ton manteau et que je ne t’ai pas tué, reconnais et vois qu’il n’y a dans ma conduite ni méchanceté ni révolte, et que je n’ai point péché contre toi. Et toi, tu fais la chasse à ma vie pour me l’ôter.
12 The Lord deme bitwixe me and thee, and the Lord venge me of thee; but myn hond be not in thee,
Que Yahweh soit juge entre moi et toi, et que Yahweh me venge de toi! Mais ma main ne sera pas sur toi.
13 as it is seid also in eld prouerbe, Wickidnesse schal go out of wickid men; therfor myn hond be not in thee.
Des méchants vient la méchanceté, dit le vieux proverbe; aussi ma main ne sera pas sur toi.
14 `Whom pursuest thou, kyng of Israel, whom pursuest thou? Thou pursuest a deed hound, and a quyk fle.
Après qui le roi d’Israël s’est-il mis en marche? Qui poursuis-tu? Un chien mort? Une puce?
15 The Lord be iuge, and the Lord deme bitwixe me and thee, and se, and deme my cause, and delyuere me fro thin hond.
Que Yahweh juge et prononce entre toi et moi. Qu’il regarde et qu’il défende ma cause, et que sa sentence me délivre de ta main! »
16 Sotheli whanne Dauid hadde fillid spekynge siche wordis to Saul, Saul seide, Whether this is thi vois, my sone Dauid? And Saul reiside his vois, and wepte.
Lorsque David eut achevé d’adresser ces paroles à Saül, Saül dit: « Est-ce bien ta voix, mon fils David? » Et Saül éleva la voix et pleura.
17 And he seide to Dauid, Thou art more iust than Y; for thou yauest goodis to me; forsothe Y yeldide yuelis to thee.
Il dit à David: « Tu es plus juste que moi; car toi tu m’as fait du bien, et moi je t’ai rendu du mal.
18 And thou schewidist to me to dai, what goodis thou hast do to me, how the Lord bitook me in thin hond, and thou killidist not me.
Tu as montré aujourd’hui que tu agis avec bonté envers moi, puisque Yahweh m’a livré entre tes mains et que tu ne m’as pas tué.
19 For who, `whanne he fyndith his enemy, schal delyuere hym in good weie? But the Lord yelde to thee this while, for that, that thou wrouytist to dai in me.
Si quelqu’un rencontre son ennemi, le laisse-t-il poursuivre en paix son chemin? Que Yahweh te fasse du bien en retour de ce que tu m’as fait en ce jour!
20 And now, for Y woot, that thou schalt regne moost certeynli, and schalt haue in thin hond the rewme of Israel, swere thou to me in the Lord,
Maintenant, voici que je sais que tu seras roi et que la royauté d’Israël sera stable entre tes mains.
21 that thou do not a wei my seed aftir me, nether take a wey my name fro the hows of my fadir.
Jure-moi donc par Yahweh que tu ne détruiras pas ma postérité après moi, et que tu ne retrancheras pas mon nom de la maison de mon père. »
22 And Dauid swoor to Saul. Therfor Saul yede in to his hows, and Dauid and hise men stieden to sikire placis.
David le jura à Saül. Et Saül s’en alla dans sa maison, et David et ses hommes montèrent à l’endroit fort.
