1 Samuel 16
1 And the Lord seide to Samuel, Hou long biweilist thou Saul, sithen Y castide hym awey, that he regne not on Israel; fille thin horn with oile, and come, that Y sende thee to Ysay of Bethleem; for among hise sones Y haue purueide a king to me.
Et l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Jusqu'à quand pleureras-tu sur Saül, puisque je l'ai rejeté, afin qu'il ne règne plus sur Israël? Remplis ta corne d'huile, et va; je t'enverrai vers Isaï, Bethléhémite; car je me suis pourvu d'un de ses fils pour roi.
2 And Samuel seide, Hou schal Y go? for Saul schal here, and he schal sle me. And the Lord seide, Thou schalt take a calf of the droue in thi hond, and thou schalt seye, Y cam to make sacrifice to the Lord.
Et Samuel dit: Comment irais-je? Saül l'apprendra et me tuera. Et l'Éternel répondit: Tu emmèneras avec toi une jeune vache, et tu diras: Je suis venu pour sacrifier à l'Éternel.
3 And thou schalt clepe Ysay to the sacrifice, and Y schal schewe to thee, what thou schalt do; and thou schalt anoynte, whom euere Y schal schewe to thee.
Et tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice; et je te ferai savoir ce que tu auras à faire, et tu oindras pour moi celui que je te dirai.
4 Therfor Samuel dide, as the Lord spak to hym; and he cam in to Bethleem, and the eldere men of the citee wondriden, and camen to hym, and seiden, Whether thin entryng is pesible?
Samuel fit donc comme l'Éternel avait dit, et vint à Bethléhem; et les anciens de la ville accoururent, effrayés, au-devant de lui, et dirent: Viens-tu pour notre bien?
5 And he seide, It is pesible; Y cam to make sacrifice to the Lord; be ye halewid, and come ye with me, that Y make sacrifice. Therfor he halewide Ysai, and hise sones, and clepide hem to the sacrifice.
Et il répondit: Pour votre bien. Je suis venu pour sacrifier à l'Éternel; purifiez-vous, et venez avec moi au sacrifice. Il fit aussi purifier Isaï et ses fils, et les invita au sacrifice.
6 And whanne thei hadden entrid, he siy Eliab, and seide, Whether bifor the Lord is his crist?
Et comme ils entraient, il vit Éliab, et dit en lui même: Certaine-ment l'oint de l'Éternel est devant lui.
7 And the Lord seide to Samuel, Biholde thou not his cheer, nethir hiynesse of his stature; for Y castide hym awei, and Y demyde not bi `the siyt of man; for a man seeth tho thingis that ben opyn, but the Lord biholdith the herte.
Mais l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Ne prends point garde à son visage, ni à la grandeur de sa taille; car je l'ai rejeté. L'Éternel ne regarde point à ce que l'homme regarde; l'homme regarde à ce qui paraît aux yeux; mais l'Éternel regarde au cœur.
8 And Ysai clepide Amynadab, and brouyte hym bifor Samuel; which seide, Nether the Lord hath chose this.
Et Isaï appela Abinadab, et le fit passer devant Samuel; mais il dit: L'Éternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci.
9 Forsothe Isay brouyte Samma; of whom Samuel seide, Also the Lord hath not chose this.
Et Isaï fit passer Shamma; mais Samuel dit: L'Éternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci.
10 Therfor Isai brouyte hise seuene sones bifor Samuel; and Samuel seide to Ysai, The Lord hath `not chose of these.
Isaï fit passer ainsi ses sept fils devant Samuel; et Samuel dit à Isaï: L'Éternel n'a point choisi ceux-ci.
11 And Samuel seide to Isai, Whether thi sones ben now fillid? And Isai answeride, Yit `another is, a litil child, and lisewith scheep. And Samuel seide to Isai, Sende thou, and brynge hym; for we schulen not sitte to mete, bifor that he come hidur.
Puis Samuel dit à Isaï: Sont-ce là tous tes enfants? Et il répondit: Il reste encore le plus jeune; mais, voici, il paît les brebis. Alors Samuel dit à Isaï: Envoie-le chercher; car nous ne nous mettrons point à table jusqu'à ce qu'il soit venu ici.
12 Therfor Ysai sente, and brouyte hym; sotheli he was rodi, and fair in siyt, and of semely face. And the Lord seide, Rise thou, and anoynte hym; for it is he.
Il envoya donc et le fit venir. Or, il était blond, avec de beaux yeux et un beau visage; et l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Lève toi et oins-le; car c'est celui-là.
13 Therfor Samuel took the horn of oyle, and anoyntid hym in the myddis of his britheren; and the Spirit of the Lord was dressid in to Dauid fro that day `and afterward. And Samuel roos, and yede in to Ramatha.
Alors Samuel prit la corne d'huile, et l'oignit au milieu de ses frères, et depuis ce jour-là l'Esprit de l'Éternel saisit David. Puis Samuel se leva, et s'en alla à Rama.
14 And so the Spirit of the Lord yede awei fro Saul, and a wickid spirit of the Lord trauelide Saul.
Et l'Esprit de l'Éternel se retira de Saül, et un mauvais esprit, envoyé par l'Éternel, le troublait.
15 And the seruauntis of Saul seiden to hym, Lo! an yuel spirit of the Lord traueilith thee;
Et les serviteurs de Saül lui dirent: Voici, un mauvais esprit, envoyé de Dieu, te trouble.
16 oure lord the kyng comaunde, and thi seruauntis that ben bifore thee, schulen seke a man, that kan synge with an harpe, that whanne the yuel spirit of the Lord takith thee, he harpe with his hond, and thou bere esiliere.
Que notre seigneur parle; tes serviteurs, qui sont devant toi, chercheront un homme qui sache jouer de la harpe; et quand le mauvais esprit, envoyé de Dieu, sera sur toi, il en jouera de sa main, et tu seras soulagé.
17 And Saul seide to hise seruauntis, Puruey ye to me sum man syngynge wel, and brynge ye hym to me.
Saül dit donc à ses serviteurs: Trouvez-moi donc un homme qui sache bien jouer, et amenez-le-moi.
18 And oon of the children answeride and seide, Lo! Y siy the sone of Ysai of Bethleem, kunnynge to synge, and `strongeste in myyt, and `a man able to batel, and prudent in wordis, and a feir man; and the Lord is with hym.
Et l'un de ses serviteurs répondit et dit: Voici, j'ai vu un fils d'Isaï, le Bethléhémite, qui sait jouer; c'est un homme fort et vaillant, un guerrier, qui parle bien, bel homme, et l'Éternel est avec lui.
19 Therfor Saul sente messangeris to Ysay, and seide, Sende thou to me Dauid thi sone, `which is in the lesewis.
Alors Saül envoya des messagers à Isaï, pour lui dire: Envoie-moi David, ton fils, qui est avec les brebis.
20 Therfor Isai took an asse `ful of looues, and a galoun of wyn, and a `kyde of geet; and sente bi the hond of Dauid his sone to Saul.
Et Isaï prit un âne chargé de pain, et une outre de vin, et un chevreau de lait, et les envoya à Saül, par David, son fils.
21 And Dauid cam to Saul, and stood bifor hym; and Saul louyde hym greetli, and he was maad `his squyer.
Et David vint vers Saül, et se présenta devant lui; et Saül l'aima fort, et il en fit son écuyer.
22 And Saul sente to Isay, and seide, Dauid stonde in my siyt, for he foond grace in myn iyen.
Et Saül envoya dire à Isaï: Je te prie, que David demeure à mon service; car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux.
23 Therfor whanne euer the wickid spirit of the Lord took Saul, Dauid took the harpe, and smoot with his hond, and Saul was coumfortid, and he hadde liytere; for the wickid spirit yede awey fro hym.
Quand donc le mauvais esprit, envoyé de Dieu, était sur Saül, David prenait la harpe, et en jouait de sa main; et Saül respirait et était soulagé, et le mauvais esprit se retirait de lui.
