< Matthew 17 >

1 And after six days, Jesus taketh Peter, and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up to a high mountain apart;
And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John his brother, and leadeth them up into a high mountain apart.
2 and was transfigured before them: and his face shone like the sun, and his raiment became white as the light.
And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone as the sun; and his garments became white as the light.
3 And they saw Moses and Elias talking with Him.
And lo! there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
4 Then Peter said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou pleasest, let us make three tabernacles here, one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
And Peter answering said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if thou wilt, I will make here three tents; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
5 And as he was speaking, lo a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him.
While he was yet speaking, lo! a bright cloud overshadowed them; and lo! a voice out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; hear him.”
6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.
And the disciples hearing it, fell on their face, and were exceedingly afraid.
7 But Jesus came and touched them and said, Rise up and be not afraid.
And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.
8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw none but Jesus only.
And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no one, till the Son of man be risen from the dead.
And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell what hath been seen to no one, until the Son of man hath risen from the dead.
10 And his disciples asked Him, saying, Why then do the scribes say, that Elias must first come?
And the disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come?
11 Jesus said unto them, Elias doth indeed come first, and shall set all things right.
And he answering said, Elijah indeed cometh, and will restore all things.
12 But I tell you that Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but did what they pleased to him: and so is the Son of man to suffer by them.
But I say to you, that Elijah hath already come, and they knew him not, but did with him whatever they would. So also is the Son of man to suffer by them.
13 Then the disciples understood that He spake to them of John the baptist.
Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist.
14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to Him a man kneeling down and saying,
And when they had come to the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
15 Lord, have compassion upon my son, for he is lunatic and grievously afflicted; for he often falleth into the fire, and often into the water.
Lord, have compassion on my son; for he is a lunatic, and is sorely afflicted; for he often falleth into the fire, and often into the water.
16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not heal him.
And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17 Then Jesus answered and said, O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I bear with you?
Then Jesus answering said, Unbelieving and perverse generation! How long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him hither to me.
18 Bring him here to me. And when Jesus rebuked him, the demon departed out of him, and the child was cured from that time.
And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him; and the boy was cured from that hour.
19 Then came the disciples to Jesus in private, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
Then the disciples came to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast it out?
20 And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief: for verily I tell you, if ye had but faith as a grain of mustard-seed, ye might say to this mountain, Remove from hence thither, and it shall remove: and nothing would be impossible to you.
And he said to them, Because of your want of faith. For truly do I say to you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard, ye shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it will remove; and nothing will be impossible to you.
21 But this kind is not to be cast out but by prayer and fasting.
22 And while they were in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, the Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men:
And while they were together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The Son of man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men,
23 and they will put Him to death, and the third day He shall be raised again. And they were exceedingly grieved.
and they will put him to death; and on the third day he will rise again. And they were greatly grieved.
24 And when they were come to Capernaum, the receivers of the tribute-money came to Peter and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? Yes, saith he.
And when they had come to Capernaum, those who received the half-shekel came to Peter, and said, Doth not your teacher pay the half-shekel?
25 And when he came into the house, Jesus prevented him and said, What thinkest thou, Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? Of their own children, or of other people?
He saith, Yes. And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes? Of their own sons, or of strangers?
26 Peter saith unto Him, Of others. Jesus answered him, Then are the children free:
And when he said, Of strangers, Jesus said to him, Then are the sons free.
27 but that we may not give them offence, go to the sea-side and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, and open its mouth, and thou shalt find a piece of money: that take and give them for me and thee.
But that we may not give them offence, go to the lake, and cast a hook, and take the fish that first cometh up; and on opening his mouth, thou wilt find a shekel; take that, and give it to them for me and thee.
