< Matthew 14 >
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus,
About that time Herod the Tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
2 and said to his servants, This is John the baptist, he is certainly risen from the dead, and therefore miraculous things are done by him:
and he said to his courtiers, "This is John the Baptist: he has come back to life--and that is why these miraculous Powers are working in him."
3 for Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife;
For Herod had arrested John, and had put him in chains, and imprisoned him, for the sake of Herodias his brother Philip's wife,
4 for John said to Him, It is not lawful for thee to have her: and he would have put him to death,
because John had persistently said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
5 but that he was afraid of the people; for they esteemed him as a prophet.
And he would have liked to put him to death, but was afraid of the people, because they regarded John as a Prophet.
6 But when Herod's birth-day was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod, so
But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before all the company, and so pleased Herod
7 that he promised her with an oath to give her whatever she would ask:
that with an oath he promised to give her whatever she asked.
8 and she, being before instructed by her mother, said, Give me here in a dish the head of John the baptist:
So she, instigated by her mother, said, "Give me here on a dish the head of John the Baptist."
9 at which the king was distressed, but because of his oath, and of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given her;
The king was deeply vexed, yet because of his repeated oath and of the guests at his table he ordered it to be given her,
10 and he sent and beheaded John in the prison,
and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
11 and his head was brought in a dish, and given to the young princess, who carried it to her mother:
The head was brought on a dish and given to the young girl, and she took it to her mother.
12 and his disciples came and took up the body and buried it, and then went and told Jesus.
Then John's disciples went and removed the body and buried it, and came and informed Jesus.
13 And when Jesus heard it, He departed from thence in a ship to a solitary place of retirement: but the people hearing where He was followed Him on foot from the cities:
Upon receiving these tidings, Jesus went away by boat to an uninhabited and secluded district; but the people heard of it and followed Him in crowds from the towns by land.
14 and when Jesus came out of the ship, He saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them; and He healed their sick.
So Jesus went out and saw an immense multitude, and felt compassion for them, and cured those of them who were out of health.
15 Now when it was evening his disciples came to Him and said, This is a desert place, and meal-time is now past; dismiss the people, that they may go away to the towns, and buy themselves victuals.
But when evening was come, the disciples came to Him and said, "This is an uninhabited place, and the best of the day is now gone; send the people away to go into the villages and buy something to eat."
16 But Jesus said to them, they have no need to go away, do ye give them something to eat.
"They need not go away," replied Jesus; "you yourselves must give them something to eat."
17 And they said, we have nothing here but five loaves and two fishes:
"We have nothing here," they said, "but five loaves and a couple of fish."
18 and He said, bring them hither to me.
"Bring them here to me," He said,
19 And having ordered the multitudes to sit down upon the grass, and taken the five loaves and the two fishes, He looked up to heaven and blessed them; and He brake the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples to the people: and they did all eat, and were satisfied;
and He told all the people to sit down on the grass. Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and after looking up to heaven and blessing them, He broke up the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples distributed them to the people.
20 and they took up what was left even of fragments twelve baskets full.
So all ate, and were fully satisfied. The broken portions that remained over they gathered up, filling twelve baskets.
21 Now they that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Those who had eaten were about 5,000 adult men, without reckoning women and children.
22 And presently after Jesus obliged the disciples to get into the ship, and to go before Him to the other side, while He dismissed the multitudes:
Immediately afterwards He made the disciples go on board the boat and cross to the opposite shore, leaving Him to dismiss the people.
23 and when He had dismissed them, He went up to a hill in private to pray.
When He had done this, He climbed the hill to pray in solitude. Night came on, and he was there alone.
24 And in the evening He was there alone. Now the ship was by this time in the midst of the sea, and violently tossed by the waves; for the wind was contrary:
Meanwhile the boat was far out on the Lake, buffeted and tossed by the waves, the wind being adverse.
25 but in the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them walking on the sea:
But towards daybreak He went to them, walking over the waves.
26 and when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were affrighted and said, It is an apparition;
When the disciples saw Him walking on the waves, they were greatly alarmed. "It is a spirit," they exclaimed, and they cried out with terror.
27 and they cried out for fear: but Jesus immediately spake to them, saying, Take courage, it is I, be not afraid.
But instantly Jesus spoke to them, and said, "There is no danger; it is I; do not be afraid."
28 Then Peter answered Him and said, Lord, if it be thou, command me to come unto thee upon the waters.
"Master," answered Peter, "if it is you, bid me come to you upon the water."
"Come," said Jesus. Then Peter climbed down from the boat and walked upon the water to go to Him.
30 And Peter went down from the ship and walked upon the waters to go to Jesus: but seeing the wind boisterous, he was afraid, and beginning to sink cried out, Lord, save me.
But when he felt the wind he grew frightened, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Master, save me."
31 And Jesus, immediately stretching forth his hand, laid hold of him, and saith to him, O man of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
Instantly Jesus stretched out His hand and caught hold of him, saying to him, "O little faith, why did you doubt?"
32 So they got into the ship, and the wind ceased.
So they climbed into the boat, and the wind lulled;
33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped Him, saying, Thou art indeed the Son of God.
and the men on board fell down before him and said, "You are indeed God's Son."
34 And they passed over and came into the country of Gennesaret.
When they had quite crossed over, they put ashore at Gennesaret;
35 And the men of that place getting knowledge of Him, sent into all that country about; and they brought to Him all that were ill;
and the men of the place, recognizing Him, sent word into all the country round. So they brought all the sick to Him,
36 and intreated Him that they might but touch the border of his garment; and as many as touched Him were made perfectly well.
and they entreated Him that they might but touch the tassel of His outer garment; and all who did so were restored to perfect health.
