< Luke 14 >
1 And as He went into the house of one of the chief of the pharisees to eat on the sabbath-day, and they were watching Him,
Et factum est cum introisset Iesus in domum cuiusdam principis Pharisaeorum sabbato manducare panem, et ipsi observabant eum.
2 behold, there was a certain man before Him that had a dropsy.
Et ecce homo quidam hydropicus erat ante illum.
3 And Jesus spake to the expounders of the law and to the pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-day?
Et respondens Iesus dixit ad Legisperitos, et Pharisaeos, dicens: Si licet sabbato curare?
4 but they made no answer. And He took him and healed him, and sent him away:
At illi tacuerunt. Ipse vero apprehensum sanavit eum, ac dimisit.
5 and said unto them, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him out even on the sabbath-day?
Et respondens ad illos dixit: Cuius vestrum asinus, aut bos in puteum cadet, et non continuo extrahet illum die sabbati?
6 and they were not able to answer Him again to these things.
Et non poterant ad haec respondere illi.
7 And He spake a parable to those that were invited, observing how they chose the chief seats, saying unto them,
Dicebat autem et ad invitatos parabolam, intendens quomodo primos accubitus eligerent, dicens ad illos:
8 When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not sit down in the uppermost place, least one more honorable than thou be invited by him;
Cum invitatus fueris ad nuptias, non discumbas in primo loco, ne forte honoratior te sit invitatus ab illo,
9 and he who invited thee and him, should come and say to thee, Give place to this person, and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place.
et veniens is, qui te et illum vocavit, dicat tibi: Da huic locum: et tunc incipias cum rubore novissimum locum tenere.
10 But when thou art invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, that, when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then wilt thou have honor before them that sit at table with thee:
sed cum vocatus fueris, vade, recumbe in novissimo loco: ut, cum venerit qui te invitavit, dicat tibi: Amice, ascende superius. Tunc erit tibi gloria coram simul discumbentibus:
11 for whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
quia omnis, qui se exaltat, humiliabitur: et qui se humiliat, exaltabitur.
12 He said also to him that had invited Him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, do not invite thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kindred, nor thy rich neighbors; least they invite thee again, and so a return be made thee.
Dicebat autem et ei, qui invitaverat: Cum facis prandium, aut coenam, noli vocare amicos tuos, neque fratres tuos, neque cognatos, neque vicinos neque divites: ne forte te et ipsi reinvitent, et fiat tibi retributio.
13 But when thou makest a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind; and thou shalt be happy;
sed cum facis convivium, voca pauperes, debiles, claudos, et caecos:
14 because they have not wherewith to requite thee: for a recompense shall be given thee at the resurrection of the just.
et beatus eris, quia non habent retribuere tibi: retribuetur enim tibi in resurrectione iustorum.
15 And one of those; who sat at table with Him, hearing these things, said unto Him, Happy is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
Haec cum audisset quidam de simul discumbentibus, dixit illi: Beatus, qui manducabit panem in regno Dei.
16 Upon which He said, A certain man made a great supper and invited many;
At ipse dixit ei: Homo quidam fecit coenam magnam, et vocavit multos.
17 and sent his servant at supper-time to say to them that were invited, Come, for all things are now ready.
Et misit servum suum hora coenae dicere invitatis ut venirent, quia iam parata sunt omnia.
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuses; the first said, I have bought a field, and I must go and see it, pray have me excused.
Et coeperunt simul omnes excusare. Primus dixit ei: Villam emi, et necesse habeo exire, et videre illam: rogo te habe me excusatum.
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and am going to try them, pray have me excused.
Et alter dixit: Iuga boum emi quinque, et eo probare illa: rogo te habe me excusatum.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
Et alius dixit: Uxorem duxi, et ideo non possum venire.
21 So the servant came and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go directly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the lame, and the blind.
Et reversus servus nunciavit haec domino suo. Tunc iratus paterfamilias, dixit servo suo: Exi cito in plateas, et vicos civitatis: et pauperes, ac debiles, et caecos, et claudos introduc huc.
22 And the servant said, Sir, it is done according to thine order, and still there is room.
Et ait servus: Domine, factum est ut imperasti, et adhuc locus est.
23 And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the high-ways and hedges, and press them to come in, that my house may be filled:
Et ait dominus servo: Exi in vias, et sepes: et compelle intrare, ut impleatur domus mea.
24 for I tell you, that none of those men who were invited, shall taste of my supper.
Dico autem vobis quod nemo virorum illorum, qui vocati sunt, gustabit coenam meam.
25 Now there were great multitudes going along with Him:
Ibant autem turbae multae cum eo: et conversus dixit ad illos:
26 so he turned and said to them, If any man come to me, and does not comparatively hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple.
Si quis venit ad me, et non odit patrem suum, et matrem, et uxorem, et filios, et fratres, et sorores, adhuc autem et animam suam, non potest meus esse discipulus.
27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and follow me, cannot be my disciple.
Et qui non baiulat crucem suam, et venit post me, non potest meus esse discipulus.
28 For who of you that hath a mind to build a tower does not first sit down and calculate the expence, whether he hath wherewithal to perfect it?
Quis enim ex vobis volens turrim aedificare, nonne prius sedens computat sumptus, qui necessarii sunt, si habeat ad perficiendum,
29 least having laid a foundation and not being able to finish,
ne, posteaquam posuerit fundamentum, et non potuerit perficere, omnes, qui vident, incipiant illudere ei,
30 all that see it, should deride him, saying, this man began to build and was not able to finish.
dicentes: Quia hic homo coepit aedificare, et non potuit consummare?
31 Or what king, going to engage with another king in battle, doth not sit down first and consult, whether he be able with ten thousand men to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
Aut quis rex iturus committere bellum adversus alium regem, non sedens prius cogitat, si possit cum decem millibus occurrere ei, qui cum viginti millibus venit ad se?
32 and if not, while he is yet far off, he sendeth an embassy, and desireth conditions of peace.
alioquin adhuc illo longe agente, legationem mittens rogat ea, quae pacis sunt.
33 So, every one of you, that doth not give up all that he hath, cannot be my disciple.
Sic ergo omnis ex vobis, qui non renunciat omnibus, quae possidet, non potest meus esse discipulus.
34 Salt is good; but if the salt have lost it's savor, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
Bonum est sal. Si autem sal evanuerit, in quo condietur?
35 it is neither fit for the land, nor for the dunghil; but they throw it away. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Neque in terram, neque in sterquilinium utile est, sed foras mittetur. Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.
