Luke 1
1 Whereas many have undertaken to compose a narrative of the things, which have been fully certified among us;
Puesto que muchos han emprendido la tarea de poner en orden una narración relativa a los asuntos que se han cumplido entre nosotros,
2 as they delivered them to us, who were from the beginning eye-witnesses of them, and ministers of the word;
tal como nos lo transmitieron los que desde el principio fueron testigos oculares y servidores de la palabra,
3 it seemed good to me also, having thoroughly traced them all from the very first, to write an account of them in order to thee,
también me pareció bien, habiendo entendido el curso de todas las cosas con exactitud desde el principio, escribirte en orden, excelentísimo Teófilo;
4 most excellent Theophilus, that thou mayst know the certainty of the things wherein thou hast been instructed.
para que conozcas la certeza relativa a las cosas en las que fuiste instruido.
5 There was in the days of Herod king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the family of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
Había en los días de Herodes, rey de Judea, un sacerdote llamado Zacarías, de la división sacerdotal de Abías. Tenía una esposa de las hijas de Aarón, que se llamaba Elisabet.
6 And they were both righteous in the sight of God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
Ambos eran justos ante Dios, y andaban irreprochablemente en todos los mandamientos y ordenanzas del Señor.
7 And they had no child, for Elisabeth was barren; and they were both far advanced in years.
Pero no tuvieron hijos, porque Elisabet era estéril, y ambos eran de edad avanzada.
8 And it came to pass, while he was in the order of his course performing the priest's office before God,
Mientras ejercía el oficio sacerdotal ante Dios en el orden de su división
9 according to the custom of dividing the office of the priests, that it fell to his lot to burn incense, entring into the temple of the Lord:
según la costumbre del oficio sacerdotal, le tocaba entrar en el templo del Señor y quemar incienso.
10 and all the people were praying without at the time of offering incense.
Toda la multitud del pueblo oraba fuera a la hora del incienso.
11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right hand of the altar of incense.
Se le apareció un ángel del Señor, de pie a la derecha del altar del incienso.
12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was startled and struck with fear:
Zacarías se turbó al verlo y le entró miedo.
13 but the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias; for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John:
Pero el ángel le dijo: “No temas, Zacarías, porque tu petición ha sido escuchada. Tu mujer, Elisabet, te dará a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Juan.
14 and he shall be a joy and transport to thee, yea, many shall rejoice on account of his birth; for he shall be great in the sight of the Lord,
Tendrás alegría y gozo, y muchos se alegrarán de su nacimiento.
15 and he shall drink neither wine nor any other strong liquor; and he shall be filled with the holy Spirit even from his birth;
Porque será grande a los ojos del Señor, y no beberá vino ni bebida fuerte. Estará lleno del Espíritu Santo, incluso desde el vientre de su madre.
16 and many of the children of Israel shall he convert unto the Lord their God.
Hará que muchos de los hijos de Israel se conviertan al Señor, su Dios.
17 And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers unto the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to prepare for the Lord a people well-disposed.
Irá delante de él con el espíritu y el poder de Elías, ‘para hacer volver el corazón de los padres a los hijos’, y a los desobedientes a la sabiduría de los justos; para preparar un pueblo preparado para el Señor.”
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife far advanced in years.
Zacarías dijo al ángel: “¿Cómo puedo estar seguro de esto? Porque soy un anciano, y mi mujer está muy avanzada en años”.
19 And the angel answering said to him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God, and I am sent to speak to thee, and to tell thee this good news:
El ángel le respondió: “Soy Gabriel, que está en la presencia de Dios. He sido enviado para hablarte y traerte esta buena noticia.
20 and now shalt thou be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass; because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled at their season.
He aquí que te quedarás callado y no podrás hablar hasta el día en que sucedan estas cosas, porque no creíste en mis palabras, que se cumplirán a su debido tiempo.”
21 And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondered at his staying so long in the temple:
La gente esperaba a Zacarías y se maravillaba de que se demorara en el templo.
22 but when he came out he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them, and continued speechless:
Cuando salió, no pudo hablarles. Se dieron cuenta de que había tenido una visión en el templo. Siguió haciéndoles señales, y permaneció mudo.
23 and as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
Cuando se cumplieron los días de su servicio, se fue a su casa.
24 And after these days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and retired five months,
Después de estos días, concibió Elisabet, su mujer, y se escondió cinco meses, diciendo:
25 saying, the Lord hath thus dealt with me in the days wherein he looked upon me to take away my reproach among men.
“Así me ha hecho el Señor en los días en que me ha mirado, para quitar mi oprobio entre los hombres.”
26 But in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee called Nazareth,
En el sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea llamada Nazaret,
27 to a virgin who was betrothed to a man, whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary.
a una virgen comprometida a casarse con un hombre que se llamaba José, de la casa de David. La virgen se llamaba María.
28 And when the angel came in to the room to her, he said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured; the Lord is with thee;
Al entrar, el ángel le dijo: “¡Alégrate, muy favorecida! El Señor está contigo. Bendita eres entre las mujeres”.
29 blessed art thou among women! and when she saw him, she was confused at what he said, and pondered in her mind what sort of salutation this could be.
Pero cuando lo vio, se preocupó mucho por el dicho, y pensó qué clase de saludo sería éste.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favor with God:
El ángel le dijo: “No temas, María, porque has encontrado el favor de Dios.
31 and behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS:
He aquí que concebirás en tu seno y darás a luz un hijo, al que pondrás por nombre “Jesús”.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God shall give Him the throne of David his father,
Será grande y se llamará Hijo del Altísimo. El Señor Dios le dará el trono de su padre David,
33 and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (aiōn g165)
y reinará sobre la casa de Jacob para siempre. Su Reino no tendrá fin”. (aiōn g165)
34 Then said Mary to the angel, How can this be, since I am a virgin?
María dijo al ángel: “¿Cómo puede ser esto, siendo yo virgen?”.
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee, and therefore thine holy offspring shall be called the Son of God: and lo,
El ángel le respondió: “El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti, y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra. Por eso también el santo que nazca de ti será llamado Hijo de Dios.
36 thy cousin Elisabeth also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren;
He aquí que también Elisabet, tu pariente, ha concebido un hijo en su vejez; y éste es el sexto mes de la que se llamaba estéril.
37 for nothing is impossible with God.
Porque nada de lo dicho por Dios es imposible.”
38 Then Mary said, Behold the servant of the Lord, may it be unto me according to thy word. So the angel departed from her.
María dijo: “He aquí la sierva del Señor; hágase en mí según tu palabra”. Entonces el ángel se alejó de ella.
39 Then Mary arose and went with speed into the hill-country, to a city of Juda,
En aquellos días, María se levantó y se fue de prisa a la región montañosa, a una ciudad de Judá,
40 and came into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
entró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Isabel.
41 And as soon as Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the child leaped in her womb, and Elisabeth was filled with the holy Spirit:
Cuando Isabel oyó el saludo de María, el niño saltó en su seno; e Isabel quedó llena del Espíritu Santo.
42 and she cried out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb:
Gritó en voz alta y dijo: “Bendita eres entre las mujeres y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre.
43 and whence is this honor to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
¿Por qué soy tan favorecida, para que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?
44 for behold, as soon as the voice of thy salutation reached my ears, the child in my womb leaped for joy:
Porque cuando la voz de tu saludo llegó a mis oídos, el niño saltó de alegría en mi vientre.
45 and blessed is she that believed; for there shall be a performance of the things that were told her from the Lord.
¡Bienaventurada la que ha creído, porque se cumplirán las cosas que se le han dicho de parte del Señor!”
46 And Mary said, "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour;
María dijo, “Mi alma engrandece al Señor.
47 for He hath regarded the low estate of his handmaid:
Mi espíritu se ha alegrado en Dios, mi Salvador,
48 for behold, from henceforth shall all generations call me blessed:
pues ha mirado el humilde estado de su sierva. Porque he aquí que, a partir de ahora, todas las generaciones me llamarán dichosa.
49 for He that is mighty hath done great things for me,
Porque el que es poderoso ha hecho grandes cosas por mí. Santo es su nombre.
50 and his name is holy, and his mercy is on them that fear Him, unto all generations.
Su misericordia es por generaciones y generaciones sobre los que le temen.
51 He hath wrought powerfully with his arm; He hath confounded those that were proud in the imagination of their heart.
Ha demostrado poder con su brazo. Ha dispersado a los orgullosos en la imaginación de sus corazones.
52 He hath cast down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the humble.
Ha derribado a los príncipes de sus tronos, y ha exaltado a los humildes.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He hath sent away empty.
Ha colmado de bienes a los hambrientos. Ha enviado a los ricos con las manos vacías.
54 He hath supported Israel his servant,
Ha dado ayuda a Israel, su siervo, para que se acuerde de la misericordia,
55 in remembrance of his mercy (even as He promised to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed, ) for ever." (aiōn g165)
como habló con nuestros padres, a Abraham y a su descendencia para siempre”. (aiōn g165)
56 And Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her own house.
María se quedó con ella unos tres meses y luego volvió a su casa.
57 Now when Elisabeth's time for her delivery was fully come, she brought forth a son:
Se cumplió el tiempo en que Elisabet debía dar a luz, y dio a luz un hijo.
58 and her neighbours and kindred heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they congratulated her;
Sus vecinos y sus parientes oyeron que el Señor había engrandecido su misericordia con ella, y se alegraron con ella.
59 and on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child: and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of his father:
Al octavo día vinieron a circuncidar al niño, y quisieron llamarlo Zacarías, como el nombre de su padre.
60 but his mother said, No, but he shall be called John:
Su madre respondió: “No, sino que se llamará Juan”.
61 and they said to her, There is none of thy relations of this name.
Le dijeron: “No hay nadie entre tus parientes que se llame así”.
62 And they made signs to his father, what name he would have him called by.
Hicieron señas a su padre de cómo quería que se llamara.
63 And he called for a writing-tablet, and wrote upon it, His name is John: and they all wondered.
Pidió una tablilla y escribió: “Se llama Juan”. Todos se maravillaron.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake and praised God.
Al instante se le abrió la boca y se le liberó la lengua, y habló bendiciendo a Dios.
65 And an awe fell upon all that dwelt round about them; and all these things were divulged through the whole hill-country of Judea.
El temor se apoderó de todos los que vivían alrededor, y todos estos dichos fueron comentados en toda la región montañosa de Judea.
66 And all that heard them, laid them up in their hearts, saying, What a child will this be? And the hand of the Lord was with him.
Todos los que los oían los guardaban en su corazón, diciendo: “¿Qué será entonces este niño?” La mano del Señor estaba con él.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the holy Spirit,
Su padre Zacarías fue lleno del Espíritu Santo y profetizó diciendo,
68 and prophesied, saying, "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He hath visited and wrought redemption for his people,
“Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de Israel, porque ha visitado y redimido a su pueblo;
69 and hath raised up an horn of salvation for us,
y nos ha levantado un cuerno de salvación en la casa de su siervo David
70 in the house of his servant David, as He spake by the mouth of his holy prophets from the beginning, (aiōn g165)
(como habló por boca de sus santos profetas que han sido desde la antigüedad), (aiōn g165)
71 even salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us,
salvación de nuestros enemigos y de la mano de todos los que nos odian;
72 to display his mercy towards our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,
para mostrar misericordia hacia nuestros padres, para recordar su santa alianza,
73 according to the oath which He sware to Abraham our father,
el juramento que hizo a Abraham, nuestro padre,
74 to grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him,
que nos conceda que, siendo liberados de la mano de nuestros enemigos, debe servirle sin miedo,
75 all the days of our life.
en santidad y justicia ante él todos los días de nuestra vida.
76 And thou, my child, shalt be called the prophet of the most High; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord,
Y tú, niño, serás llamado profeta del Altísimo; porque irás delante de la cara del Señor para preparar sus caminos,
77 to make known salvation to his people,
para dar conocimiento de la salvación a su pueblo por la remisión de sus pecados,
78 in the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day-spring hath visited us from on high,
por la tierna misericordia de nuestro Dios, por la que nos visitará la aurora de lo alto,
79 to enlighten them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct our feet into the way of peace."
para iluminar a los que están en las tinieblas y en la sombra de la muerte; para guiar nuestros pies por el camino de la paz”.
80 And the child grew, and became strong in spirit: and he was in the deserts till the time of his being manifested to Israel.
El niño crecía y se fortalecía en espíritu, y estuvo en el desierto hasta el día de su aparición pública ante Israel.
