John 11
1 Now there was a certain person sick, to wit, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and Martha her sister.
Now a certain man was sick, Leayzar from Beth-Naiya, of the village of Maryam and her sister, Marta.
2 (And it was Mary, that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
It was that Maryam who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Leayzar, was sick.
3 His sisters therefore sent to Him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, look, the one you love is sick."
4 But when Jesus heard it, He said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.
But when Yeshua heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it."
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
Now Yeshua loved Marta, and her sister, and Leayzar.
6 Therefore when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed indeed two days in the place where He was:
When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.
7 and after that He saith to his disciples, Let us go again into Judea.
Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go into Yehuda again."
8 The disciples say unto Him, Master, the Jews very lately attempted to stone thee, and art thou going thither again?
The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any man walk in the day, he doth not stumble; for he seeth the light of this world:
Yeshua answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10 but if any one walk in the night, he stumbleth; because he hath no light.
But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
11 Having thus answered them, He afterwards saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep; but I am going to awake him.
He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Leayzar, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."
12 Therefore his disciples said, Lord, if he sleep, he will do well.
Then the disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."
13 But Jesus spake of his death; though they thought that He was speaking of the refreshment of sleep.
Now Yeshua had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.
14 Then Jesus said to them plainly, Lazarus is dead:
So Yeshua said to them plainly then, "Leayzar is dead.
15 and I am glad for your sakes, I was not there, that ye may believe: but let us go to him.
I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let us go to him."
16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
Tama therefore, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us go also, that we may die with him."
17 And when Jesus came, He found that he had been four days in the grave.
So when Yeshua came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
18 Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, being but about fifteen furlongs from it:
Now Beth-Naiya was near Urishlim, about two miles away.
19 and many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
Many of the Jewish people had come to Marta and Maryam, to console them concerning their brother.
20 Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him: but Mary was sitting in the house.
Then when Marta heard that Yeshua was coming, she went and met him, but Maryam stayed in the house.
21 And Martha said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
Therefore Marta said to Yeshua, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother would not have died.
22 But I know that even now whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will grant it thee.
Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you."
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
Yeshua said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
24 Martha saith unto Him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Marta said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."
25 Jesus then told her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth on me, though he were dead, shall live again.
Yeshua said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
And whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (aiōn g165)
27 Dost thou believe this? She saith unto Him, Yes, Lord, I believe that thou art the Messiah, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.
She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Meshikha, the Son of God, he who comes into the world."
28 And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister, telling her privately, The Master is coming and calleth for thee.
And when she had said this, she went away, and called Maryam, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you."
29 As soon as she heard it, she gets up with all speed and comes to Him.
When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.
30 For Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in the place where Martha met Him.
Now Yeshua had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Marta met him.
31 The Jews therefore that were with her in the house to comfort her, seeing Mary that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She is going to the grave to weep there.
Then the Yehudeans who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Maryam, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was and saw Him, fell down at his feet, saying unto Him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
Therefore when Maryam came to where Yeshua was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother would not have died."
33 Jesus therefore, when He saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping, that came with her, groaned in spirit and was troubled.
When Yeshua therefore saw her weeping, and the Yehudeans weeping who came with her, he was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,
34 And He said, Where have ye laid him?
and said, "Where have you put him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."
35 They say unto Him, Lord, come and see: and Jesus wept.
Yeshua wept.
36 The Jews therefore said, Behold, how he loved him!
The Yehudeans therefore said, "See how he loved him."
37 but some of them said, Could not He, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused also that this man should not have died?
But some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?"
38 Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre: which was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
So Yeshua, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
39 Jesus saith, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the deceased, saith unto Him, Lord, by this time he is offensive; for it is the fourth day.
Yeshua said, "Take away the stone." Marta, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."
40 Jesus saith unto her, Did I not tell thee, that if thou believest, thou shalt see the glory of God?
Yeshua said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"
41 So they took away the stone from the place where the corpse was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, I thank Thee, that Thou hast heard me.
So they took away the stone. And Yeshua lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.
42 I knew indeed that Thou always hearest me: but because of the people standing by I say this, that they may believe that Thou hast sent me.
I know that you always listen to me, but because of the crowd that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me."
43 And when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
When he had said this, he shouted with a loud voice, "Leayzar, come out."
44 And he that had been dead came forth, having his feet and hands rolled up in grave-cloths: and his face bound about with a napkin. Then Jesus bid them, Loosen him and let him go.
The man who had died came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Yeshua said to them, "Free him, and let him go."
45 Therefore many of the Jews, that came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed on Him.
Therefore many of the Yehudeans, who came to Maryam and had seen the things which he did, believed in him.
46 But some of them went to the pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Yeshua had done.
47 Therefore the chief priests and the pharisees held a council and said, What are we doing? for this man worketh many miracles.
The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs.
48 If we suffer Him to go on thus, all the people will believe on Him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our place and nation.
If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."
49 But Caiaphas who was one of them, being high-priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all;
But a certain one of them, Qayapha, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,
50 nor do ye consider, that it is better for us that one man should die for the people, than that the whole nation should perish.
nor do you consider that it is advantageous for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."
51 This however he spake not of himself, but being high-priest at that time he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation:
Now he did not say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Yeshua would die for the nation,
52 and not for the Jewish nation only, but that he might also gather together the children of God that are dispersed.
and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
53 From that day therefore they consulted together to put Him to death.
So from that day on they plotted to kill him.
54 Wherefore Jesus appeared no longer publicly among the Jews; but went away from thence into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
Yeshua therefore walked no more openly among the Yehudeans, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Aphreeim; and stayed there with his disciples.
55 Now the passover of the Jews was near; and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country, before the passover, to purify themselves.
Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many went up from the country to Urishlim before the Passover, to purify themselves.
56 So they sought for Jesus, and said to one another in the temple, What think ye? that He will not come to the feast?
Then they sought for Yeshua and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think—that he is not coming to the feast at all?"
57 Now both the chief priests and the pharisees had given order, that if any one knew where He was, he should inform them, that they might take Him.
Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might arrest him.
