< Hebrews 11 >

1 Now faith is the confident expectation of things hoped for, and a conviction of things not seen:
Now faith is being confident of what we hope for, convinced about things we do not see.
2 for by it the ancients obtained an honorable testimony.
For by this, the people of old were attested.
3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, for the things which are seen were not made of things which appear. (aiōn g165)
By faith, we understand that the ages were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible. (aiōn g165)
4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God bearing witness to his gifts: and by it, though dead, he yet speaketh.
By faith, Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he was attested as righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and though he died he still speaks through it.
5 By faith Enoch was translated, that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him; for before his translation he had this testimony that he pleased God:
By faith, Enoch was taken away, so that he would not see death, "and he was not found, because God took him away." For before he was taken he was attested as having pleased God.
6 whereas without faith it is impossible to please Him; for he that cometh to God must believe, that He is, and is the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.
Now without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.
7 By faith Noah being warned by God of things which were not yet seen, moved with pious fear, prepared an ark for the safety of his family; whereby he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
By faith, Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared a box-shaped ship for the salvation of his household, through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
8 By faith Abraham when called to go out to a place which he was afterwards to receive for an inheritance obeyed: and went out, though he knew not whither he was going.
By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he was going.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land promised him, as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob the heirs with him of the same promise.
By faith, he sojourned in a land of promise, as a foreigner, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose maker and founder is God.
For he looked for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
11 By faith also Sarah received strength to conceive seed, and brought forth a son when she was past age, because she accounted Him faithful who had promised.
By faith, even barren Sarah herself received power to conceive when she was past age, and gave birth, since she considered him faithful who had promised.
12 So that there descended even from one, and him in a manner dead, a posterity like the stars of heaven for multitude, and as the sand on the sea shore, innumerable.
Therefore as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as innumerable as the sand which is by the sea shore, were fathered by one man, and him as good as dead.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but seen them from afar, and been persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and sojourners on the earth.
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and embraced them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth.
14 Now they that say such things shew plainly that they are seeking their own country:
For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.
15 and if they had been mindful of that from which they came, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
If indeed they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had enough time to return.
16 But they desire a better, that is, an heavenly one; wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He hath prepared for them a city.
Instead, they were longing for a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he who had received the promises, offered up his only son;
By faith, Abraham, being tested, offered up Isaac; and he who had gladly received the promises was offering up his one and only son;
18 of whom it was told him, that in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
even he to whom it was said, "In Isaac will your descendants be called;"
19 concluding that God was able to raise him even from the dead; from whence indeed he had in a manner received him.
concluding that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Figuratively speaking, he also did receive him back from the dead.
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things future.
By faith, Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come.
21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph; and worshipped leaning on the top of his staff.
By faith, Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and bowed over the top of his staff.
22 By faith Joseph when he died, mentioned the departure of the children of Israel and gave a charge concerning his bones.
By faith, Joseph, when his end was near, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave instructions concerning his bones.
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months by his parents, because they saw he was a fine child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.
By faith, Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.
24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
By faith, Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,
25 chusing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to have the temporary enjoyment of sin:
choosing rather to share ill treatment with God's people, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time;
26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt, for he looked to the recompence of reward.
considering the abuse suffered for the Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.
27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he continued firm as seeing Him who is invisible.
By faith, he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
28 By faith he observed the passover and sprinkling of the blood, that he, who destroyed the first-born of the Egyptians, might not touch them.
By faith, he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.
29 By faith they passed through the Red-sea, as by dry land, which the Egyptians attempting to do were drowned.
By faith, they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to do so, they were swallowed up.
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encompassed seven days.
By faith, the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encircled for seven days.
31 By faith Rahab the harlot perished not with the unbelievers, having received the spies with peace.
By faith, Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, having received the spies in peace.
32 And what need I say more? for the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and Barak, and Sampson, and Jephthah, and David, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
And what more should I say? For the time would fail me if I told of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets;
33 who by faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
who, through faith subdued kingdoms, worked out righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made powerful, became strong in battle, and turned to flight the armies of their enemies.
quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, grew mighty in war, and caused foreign armies to flee.
35 Women received their dead raised to life again; and others were tortured to death, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
Women received their dead by resurrection. And others were tortured, not accepting the payment for release, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
36 And others had the trial of mockings and scourgings, and of bonds too and imprisonment.
Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment.
37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain by the sword: they went about in sheep-skins, and goat-skins, being destitute, afflicted,
They were stoned, they were sawed apart, they were put to the test, they were killed with the sword. They went around in sheepskins and in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, mistreated
38 distressed, (of whom the world was not worthy) wandering in deserts, and mountains, and dens, and caves of the earth.
(of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth.
39 And these all, though they obtained an honorable testimony by faith, yet received not the promise;
These all, having had testimony given to them through their faith, did not receive the promise,
40 God having provided something better concerning us, that without us they might not be made perfect.
God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
