Ephesians 5
1 Be ye therefore imitators of God as his dear children; and walk in love,
Weest dus navolgers van God, als zijn geliefde kinderen;
2 even as Christ hath loved us, and given Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an odor of sweet perfume.
en leeft in liefde, zoals ook Christus u heeft liefgehad en Zich voor ons heeft gegeven als gave en offer, tot een lieflijke geur voor God.
3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or inordinate desire, let it not be even named among you; for so it becometh saints:
Van ontucht, alle soort van onreinheid en hebzucht mag onder u zelfs geen sprake meer zijn, zoals dit heiligen betaamt;
4 nor ribaldry, nor buffoonery, nor wanton jesting, which are not meet: but rather giving of thanks.
evenmin van vuile taal, zotteklap of spotternij. Deze dingen betamen niet; een dankgebed betaamt veel meer.
5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, (who is an idolater, ) hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Weet wel: geen ontuchtige, onreine of hebzuchtige bezit een erfdeel in het koninkrijk van Christus en van God; zo iemand staat met een afgodendienaar gelijk.
6 Let no one deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
Laat niemand u met holle woorden bedriegen; want daarom juist komt Gods toorn over de kinderen der ongehoorzaamheid.
7 Therefore be not partners with them.
Wordt dus hun medeplichtigen niet!
8 For ye were heretofore darkness, but now ye are light in the Lord:
Vroeger waart gij duisternis, thans zijt gij licht in den Heer; gedraagt u dan ook als kinderen van het licht.
9 walk therefore as children of light, (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth, )
Want de vrucht van het licht bestaat in allerlei goedheid, gerechtigheid en waarheid.
10 approving what is well-pleasing to the Lord.
Onderzoekt wat welbehaaglijk is aan den Heer,
11 And have no communion with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
en neemt geen deel aan de onvruchtbare werken der duisternis; maar keurt ze af.
12 For it is a shame even to relate the things that are done by them in secret.
Want wat door hen in het geheim wordt gedaan, is te schandelijk zelfs om het te noemen.
13 But all things to be reproved: are made manifest by the light: for whatever doth make manifest, is light.
Alles echter wat afkeurenswaardig is, wordt openbaar gemaakt door het licht; want het licht maakt alles openbaar.
14 Wherefore He saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
Daarom wordt er gezegd: "Ontwaak, gij slaper; Sta op uit de doden, En Christus zal over u lichten!"
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise men:
Ziet dus nauwlettend toe, hoe ge u gedraagt: niet als dwazen, maar als wijzen;
16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
benut de gunstige gelegenheid, want de tijden zijn boos.
17 Wherefore be not thoughtless, but consider what is the will of the Lord.
Weest daarom niet onverstandig, maar tracht de wil des Heren te verstaan.
18 And be not drunk with wine, in which there is riotous excess; but be filled with the Spirit:
Bedrinkt u niet aan de wijn, want dit voert tot losbandigheid; maar wordt vol van den Geest.
19 speaking to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord:
Spreekt tot elkander in psalmen, lofzangen en geestelijke liederen; zingt en juicht in uw hart voor den Heer;
20 always giving thanks for all to God even the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ:
betuigt zonder ophouden voor alles uw dank aan God en den Vader, in de naam van Jesus Christus onzen Heer.
21 submitting yourselves to each other in the fear of God.
Weest elkander onderdanig in de vreze van Christus.
22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord:
Gij vrouwen, weest onderdanig aan uw mannen, als aan den Heer.
23 for the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and the saviour of that body.
Want de man is het hoofd van de vrouw, zoals Christus het Hoofd is der Kerk, Hij die de Verlosser is van het Lichaam.
24 As the church then is subject to Christ, so also should wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Welnu, zoals de Kerk onderdanig is aan Christus, zo moeten in alles de vrouwen het zijn aan haar mannen.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave up Himself for it:
Gij mannen, hebt uw vrouwen lief, zoals ook Christus de Kerk heeft bemind. Hij heeft Zich voor haar overgeleverd:
26 to sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
om haar te heiligen en te reinigen door het Waterbad, vergezeld van het woord;
27 that He might prepare it for Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing: but that it should be holy and unblameable.
om Zich een heerlijke Kerk te bereiden, zonder vlek of rimpel of iets van die aard, maar heilig en zonder enige smet.
28 Men ought so to love their wives, as their own bodies: he that loveth his wife, loveth himself.
Zo moeten ook de mannen hun vrouwen liefhebben als hun eigen lichaam; wie zijn vrouw bemint, heeft zichzelf lief.
29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord also doth the church:
Welnu, niemand heeft ooit zijn eigen vlees gehaat; maar hij voedt en verzorgt het, zoals ook Christus het doet met de Kerk,
30 for we are members of his body, as if taken out of his flesh, and of his bones, as Eve was out of Adam's.
omdat we de ledematen zijn van zijn Lichaam.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
"Daarom zal de man vader en moeder verlaten, en zich hechten aan zijn vrouw; en die twee zullen één vlees worden",
32 This mystery is great: but I speak concerning Christ and the Church.
Dit geheim is groot; ik bedoel: zijn verhouding tot Christus en de Kerk.
33 Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and let the wife reverence her husband.
Maar hoe het ook zij: ieder van u moet zijn vrouw liefhebben als zichzelf, en de vrouw moet eerbied hebben voor den man.
