Ecclesiastes 4
1 Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of those who were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
Một lần nữa, tôi quan sát những sự áp bức ở dưới mặt trời. Tôi thấy nước mắt của người bị áp bức, chẳng ai an ủi họ. Trong khi người áp bức có thế lực mạnh mẽ và người bị áp bức không được giúp đỡ.
2 Therefore I praised the dead who have been long dead more than the living who are yet alive.
Nên tôi kết luận rằng người đã chết có phước hơn người còn sống.
3 Yes, better than them both is him who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
Nhưng có phước nhất là người chưa sinh ra. Vì họ chưa hề thấy những việc gian ác xảy ra dưới mặt trời.
4 Then I saw all the labor and achievement that is the envy of a man’s neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Rồi tôi lại thấy rằng hầu hết con người cố gắng để thành công đều xuất phát từ lòng ganh tị. Nhưng điều này cũng là vô nghĩa—như chạy theo luồng gió.
5 The fool folds his hands together and ruins himself.
“Người dại ngồi khoanh tay lười biếng, dẫn họ vào sự hủy hoại bản thân.”
6 Better is a handful, with quietness, than two handfuls with labor and chasing after wind.
Và còn: “Thà đầy một bàn tay với lòng thanh thản còn hơn đầy hai tay làm việc nhọc nhằn như chạy theo luồng gió.”
7 Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun.
Tôi lại quan sát một điều vô nghĩa khác dưới mặt trời.
8 There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. “For whom then do I labor and deprive my soul of enjoyment?” This also is vanity. Yes, it is a miserable business.
Đây là trường hợp của người kia sống một mình, không có con hay anh em, nhưng người ấy cứ làm việc khổ nhọc để tạo ra nhiều của cải. Nhưng rồi người ấy tự hỏi: “Vì ai tôi phải khổ nhọc? Tại sao tôi phải bỏ mọi thứ vui hiện có?” Tất cả thật vô nghĩa và gây sầu não.
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.
Hai người tốt hơn một, vì họ có thể giúp nhau thành công.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.
Nếu một người ngã, người kia đỡ. Nhưng ở một mình mà bị ngã thì ai đỡ mình lên?
11 Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one keep warm alone?
Cũng vậy, hai người nằm chung sẽ giữ ấm lẫn nhau. Còn một người nằm thì làm sao ấm được?
12 If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Người đứng lẻ một mình dễ bị tấn công và đánh hạ, nhưng hai người sát vai chống trả sẽ chiến thắng. Ba người càng tốt hơn, như một sợi dây ba tao thật khó đứt.
13 Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who doesn’t know how to receive admonition any more.
Một người trẻ nghèo mà khôn còn hơn một ông vua giàu mà dại, chẳng nghe lời khuyên can.
14 For out of prison he came out to be king; yes, even in his kingdom he was born poor.
Như một người trẻ lớn lên trong một gia đình nghèo nàn, vẫn thành công. Dù người từng ở tù vẫn có thể làm vua.
15 I saw all the living who walk under the sun, that they were with the youth, the other, who succeeded him.
Nhưng sau đó mọi người lại sốt sắng giúp đỡ một người trẻ khác, rồi đặt người ấy kế vị vua trước.
16 There was no end of all the people, even of all them over whom he was—yet those who come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a chasing after wind.
Những đám đông đứng quanh người ấy nhiều vô kể, nhưng rồi một thế hệ khác tiếp nối và loại bỏ người. Vậy, vương quyền cũng vô nghĩa—như chạy theo luồng gió.
