Acts 19
1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus and found certain disciples.
Pendant qu'Apollos était à Corinthe, Paul, ayant traversé le haut pays, arriva à Éphèse, où il trouva quelques disciples.
2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Il leur dit: « Avez-vous reçu le Saint-Esprit quand vous avez cru? » Ils lui ont dit: « Non, nous n'avons même pas entendu dire qu'il y avait un Saint-Esprit. »
3 He said, “Into what then were you immersed?” They said, “Into Yochanan’s immersion.”
Il dit: « Dans quoi donc as-tu été baptisé? » Ils ont dit: « Au baptême de Jean. »
4 Paul said, “Yochanan indeed immersed with the immersion of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Messiah Yeshua.”
Paul dit: « Jean a en effet baptisé d'un baptême de repentance, en disant au peuple qu'il devait croire en celui qui viendrait après lui, c'est-à-dire en Jésus-Christ. »
5 When they heard this, they were immersed in the name of the Lord Yeshua.
Après avoir entendu cela, ils furent baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus.
6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.
Lorsque Paul leur eut imposé les mains, le Saint-Esprit vint sur eux, et ils parlèrent d'autres langues et prophétisèrent.
7 They were about twelve men in all.
Ils étaient environ douze hommes en tout.
8 He entered into the synagogue and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning God’s Kingdom.
Il entra dans la synagogue et, pendant trois mois, il parla avec assurance, raisonnant et persuadant sur les choses qui concernent le royaume de Dieu.
9 But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
Mais, comme quelques-uns étaient endurcis et désobéissants, parlant mal de la Voie devant la foule, il se sépara d'eux et sépara les disciples, raisonnant chaque jour dans l'école de Tyrannus.
10 This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Yeshua, both Jews and Greeks.
Cela dura deux ans, de sorte que tous ceux qui habitaient l'Asie entendirent la parole du Seigneur Jésus, tant Juifs que Grecs.
11 God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,
Dieu opérait des miracles particuliers par les mains de Paul,
12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out.
de sorte que même des mouchoirs ou des tabliers étaient portés de son corps aux malades, et les maladies se retiraient d'eux, et les mauvais esprits sortaient.
13 But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Yeshua, saying, “We adjure you by Yeshua whom Paul preaches.”
Mais quelques Juifs itinérants, exorcistes, se chargèrent d'invoquer sur ceux qui avaient les mauvais esprits le nom du Seigneur Jésus, en disant: « Nous vous adjurons par Jésus que Paul prêche. »
14 There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.
Il y avait sept fils d'un certain Scéva, un grand prêtre juif, qui faisaient cela.
15 The evil spirit answered, “Yeshua I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?”
L'esprit mauvais répondit: « Je connais Jésus et je connais Paul, mais toi, qui es-tu? »
16 The man in whom the evil spirit was leapt on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
L'homme en qui était l'esprit malin sauta sur eux, les maîtrisa et l'emporta sur eux, de sorte qu'ils s'enfuirent de cette maison, nus et blessés.
17 This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Yeshua was magnified.
Cela fut connu de tous les habitants d'Éphèse, Juifs et Grecs. La crainte s'empara d'eux tous, et le nom du Seigneur Jésus fut glorifié.
18 Many also of those who had believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds.
Beaucoup de ceux qui avaient cru vinrent aussi, confessant et déclarant leurs œuvres.
19 Many of those who practised magical arts brought their books together and burnt them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Plusieurs de ceux qui pratiquaient les arts magiques réunirent leurs livres et les brûlèrent aux yeux de tous. Ils en comptèrent le prix, qui s'élevait à cinquante mille pièces d'argent.
20 So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.
Ainsi, la parole du Seigneur se répandait et devenait puissante.
21 Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
Or, après que ces choses eurent pris fin, Paul résolut par l'Esprit, après avoir traversé la Macédoine et l'Achaïe, d'aller à Jérusalem, en disant: « Après y avoir été, il faut aussi que je voie Rome. »
22 Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.
Ayant envoyé en Macédoine deux de ceux qui le servaient, Timothée et Éraste, il resta lui-même quelque temps en Asie.
23 About that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way.
Vers ce temps-là, il se produisit une grande agitation au sujet de la voie.
24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,
En effet, un homme du nom de Démétrius, orfèvre qui fabriquait des statues d'argent d'Artémis, apporta une petite affaire aux artisans,
25 whom he gathered together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.
qu'il rassembla avec les ouvriers de même profession, et dit: « Messieurs, vous savez que c'est par ce commerce que nous sommes riches.
26 You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands.
Vous voyez et vous entendez que ce n'est pas seulement à Éphèse, mais dans presque toute l'Asie, que ce Paul a persuadé et détourné beaucoup de gens, en disant que les dieux faits de main d'homme ne sont pas des dieux.
27 Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”
Non seulement notre commerce risque d'être discrédité, mais encore le temple de la grande déesse Artémis, que toute l'Asie et le monde entier vénèrent, risque d'être compté pour rien et sa majesté détruite. »
28 When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
En entendant cela, ils furent remplis de colère et s'écrièrent: « Grande est Artémis des Éphésiens! »
29 The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.
Toute la ville fut remplie de confusion, et ils se précipitèrent tous ensemble dans le théâtre, après s'être emparés de Gaius et d'Aristarque, hommes de Macédoine, compagnons de voyage de Paul.
30 When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.
Lorsque Paul voulut entrer parmi le peuple, les disciples ne le lui permirent pas.
31 Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theatre.
Quelques-uns des Asiarques, qui étaient ses amis, lui envoyèrent une lettre pour le prier de ne pas s'aventurer sur le théâtre.
32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.
Les uns criaient donc une chose, les autres une autre, car l'assemblée était dans la confusion. La plupart d'entre eux ne savaient pas pourquoi ils s'étaient réunis.
33 They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defence to the people.
On fit sortir Alexandre du milieu de la foule, les Juifs l'ayant fait avancer. Alexandre leur fit signe de la main, et il aurait voulu prendre la parole devant le peuple.
34 But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
Mais lorsqu'ils s'aperçurent qu'il était juif, tous, d'une seule voix et pendant environ deux heures, s'écrièrent: « Grande est Artémis des Éphésiens! »
35 When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?
Lorsque le secrétaire de la ville eut calmé la foule, il dit: « Hommes d'Éphèse, quel est l'homme qui ne sait pas que la ville des Éphésiens est gardienne du temple de la grande déesse Artémis et de l'image tombée de Zeus?
36 Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet and to do nothing rash.
Puisque vous ne pouvez pas nier ces choses, restez tranquilles et ne faites rien d'irréfléchi.
37 For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.
Car tu as fait venir ces hommes, qui ne sont ni des pilleurs de temples ni des blasphémateurs de ta déesse.
38 If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.
Si donc Démétrius et les artisans qui sont avec lui ont une affaire contre quelqu'un, les tribunaux sont ouverts et il y a des proconsuls. Qu'ils portent plainte les uns contre les autres.
39 But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
Mais si vous cherchez quelque chose à propos d'autres affaires, cela sera réglé dans l'assemblée régulière.
40 For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning today’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”
En effet, nous risquons d'être accusés au sujet de l'émeute d'aujourd'hui, sans qu'il y ait de motif. A ce sujet, nous ne pourrions pas rendre compte de cette agitation. »
41 When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
Après avoir ainsi parlé, il congédia l'assemblée.
