Psalms 78
1 A contemplation by Asaph. Hear my teaching, my people. Turn your ears to the words of my mouth.
Hymne d'Asaph. Mon peuple, écoute mes leçons! Prêtez l'oreille aux paroles de ma bouche!
2 I will open my mouth in a parable. I will utter dark sayings of old,
Je vais ouvrir la bouche par des chants, et du passé faire jaillir des sentences.
3 which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
Ce que nous avons entendu et appris, et que nos pères nous ont raconté,
4 We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done.
nous ne le cèlerons point à leurs enfants, redisant à la race future les louanges de l'Éternel, et sa puissance, et les miracles qu'il fit.
5 For he established a covenant in Jacob, and appointed a teaching in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children;
Il érigea un témoignage en Jacob, et Il déposa une loi en Israël, qu'il ordonna à nos pères d'enseigner à leurs enfants,
6 that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; who should arise and tell their children,
pour qu'elle fût connue de l'âge qui suivrait, des enfants qui naîtraient, grandiraient pour la redire à leurs enfants;
7 that they might set their hope in God, and not forget God’s deeds, but keep his commandments,
afin qu'ils missent en Dieu leur confiance, et n'oubliassent point les œuvres de Dieu, et qu'ils gardassent ses commandements,
8 and might not be as their fathers— a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn’t make their hearts loyal, whose spirit was not steadfast with God.
et ne fussent pas, comme leurs pères, une race réfractaire et rebelle, une race qui n'avait pas un cœur constant, et dont l'âme ne Lui était pas fidèle.
9 The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
Les enfants d'Ephraïm furent des tireurs armés de l'arc, qui tournent le dos au jour du combat.
10 They didn’t keep God’s covenant, and refused to walk in his law.
Ils ne gardèrent point l'alliance de Dieu, et refusèrent de suivre ses lois;
11 They forgot his doings, his wondrous deeds that he had shown them.
et ils oublièrent ses hauts faits et ses miracles, dont Il les rendit témoins.
12 He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
Sous les yeux de leurs pères, Il fit des miracles, dans le pays d'Egypte, aux campagnes de Zoan.
13 He split the sea, and caused them to pass through. He made the waters stand as a heap.
Il entrouvrit la mer et les fit passer, et Il fit tenir les eaux comme une digue;
14 In the daytime he also led them with a cloud, and all night with a light of fire.
et Il les guidait le jour par la nuée, et toute la nuit, à la clarté de la flamme;
15 He split rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink abundantly as out of the depths.
Il fendit les rochers au désert, et les abreuva comme de flots abondants,
16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
et Il fit sortir des ruisseaux du rocher, et couler les eaux comme des torrents.
17 Yet they still went on to sin against him, to rebel against the Most High in the desert.
Mais ils continuèrent encore à pécher contre Lui, à être rebelles au Très-haut dans le désert.
18 They tempted God in their heart by asking food according to their desire.
Et ils tentèrent Dieu dans leur cœur, demandant d'être nourris selon leur fantaisie;
19 Yes, they spoke against God. They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
et ils parlèrent contre Dieu, ils dirent: « Dieu pourra-t-Il dresser une table au désert?
20 Behold, he struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? Will he provide meat for his people?”
Voici, Il frappa le rocher, et l'eau a ruisselé, et les fleuves ont coulé; pourra-t-Il aussi donner du pain et fournir de la viande à son peuple? »
21 Therefore Yahweh heard, and was angry. A fire was kindled against Jacob, anger also went up against Israel,
Et à l'ouïe de ces propos, l'Éternel s'irrita, et un feu s'alluma contre Jacob, et la colère s'éleva contre Israël,
22 because they didn’t believe in God, and didn’t trust in his salvation.
parce qu'ils n'avaient pas foi en Dieu, et ne comptaient pas sur son secours.
23 Yet he commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven.
Cependant Il commanda aux nuées d'en haut, et Il ouvrit les portes des Cieux;
24 He rained down manna on them to eat, and gave them food from the sky.
et Il fit pleuvoir sur eux la manne pour les nourrir, et Il leur donna le froment céleste;
25 Man ate the bread of angels. He sent them food to the full.
ils mangèrent chacun le pain des princes; Il leur envoya de quoi se nourrir à rassasiement.
26 He caused the east wind to blow in the sky. By his power he guided the south wind.
Il fit lever dans le ciel le vent d'Orient, et amena par sa puissance le vent du Midi,
27 He also rained meat on them as the dust, winged birds as the sand of the seas.
et Il fit pleuvoir sur eux la chair comme de la poussière et des oiseaux ailés, comme le sable des mers,
28 He let them fall in the middle of their camp, around their habitations.
et Il les fit tomber au milieu de leur camp, tout autour de leurs habitations.
29 So they ate, and were well filled. He gave them their own desire.
Alors ils mangèrent et se rassasièrent pleinement, Il avait ainsi satisfait leur désir.
30 They didn’t turn from their cravings. Their food was yet in their mouths,
Ils ne s'étaient pas encore dépris de leur désir, ils avaient encore leur aliment dans leur bouche,
31 when the anger of God went up against them, killed some of their strongest, and struck down the young men of Israel.
que la colère de Dieu s'éleva contre eux, et qu'il fit un massacre parmi leurs hommes forts, et qu'il coucha par terre la jeunesse d'Israël.
32 For all this they still sinned, and didn’t believe in his wondrous works.
Néanmoins ils péchèrent encore, et ne crurent point à ses miracles.
33 Therefore he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror.
Et d'un souffle Il consuma leurs jours, et leurs années par une ruine soudaine.
34 When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly.
Lorsqu'il les tuait, ils s'enquéraient de Lui, et revenaient, et cherchaient Dieu,
35 They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer.
et se rappelaient que Dieu était leur rocher, et Dieu, le Très-haut, leur rédempteur;
36 But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue.
mais leurs bouches le trompaient, et leurs langues lui mentaient,
37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant.
et leur cœur ne Lui fut pas fermement uni, et ils ne furent pas fidèles à son alliance.
38 But he, being merciful, forgave iniquity, and didn’t destroy them. Yes, many times he turned his anger away, and didn’t stir up all his wrath.
Toutefois, dans sa clémence, Il pardonna le crime et ne les détruisit pas; et souvent Il contint son courroux, et ne donna pas cours à toute sa colère.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes away, and doesn’t come again.
Il se souvint donc qu'ils étaient des mortels, un souffle qui s'en va, et ne revient plus.
40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert!
Que de fois ils Lui furent rebelles au désert, et ils L'irritèrent dans la solitude!
41 They turned again and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
Et de nouveau ils tentèrent le Seigneur, et provoquèrent le Saint d'Israël.
42 They didn’t remember his hand, nor the day when he redeemed them from the adversary;
Ils ne pensaient plus à ce qu'avait fait son bras, le jour où Il les délivra de l'ennemi,
43 how he set his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the field of Zoan,
lorsque en Egypte Il opéra des prodiges, et des miracles dans les campagnes de Zoan.
44 he turned their rivers into blood, and their streams, so that they could not drink.
Il changea ses fleuves en sang, et de leurs eaux ils ne purent plus boire.
45 He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
Parmi eux Il envoya des moucherons qui les dévorèrent, et des grenouilles qui furent leur fléau;
46 He also gave their increase to the caterpillar, and their labor to the locust.
et Il livra leur récolte à l'insecte vorace, et le fruit de leur labeur à la sauterelle.
47 He destroyed their vines with hail, their sycamore fig trees with frost.
Il fit périr leurs vignes par la grêle, et leurs sycomores par les fourmis,
48 He also gave over their livestock to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
et Il livra leur bétail à la grêle, et leurs troupeaux à la foudre.
49 He threw on them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, indignation, and trouble, and a band of angels of evil.
Il lança contre eux le feu de sa colère, le courroux, la fureur et l'angoisse, une cohorte d'anges des malheurs.
50 He made a path for his anger. He didn’t spare their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence,
Il donna carrière à son courroux, ne refusa point leur âme à la mort, mais livra leur vie en proie à la peste,
51 and struck all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tents of Ham.
et frappa tous les premiers-nés en Egypte, et les prémices de la vigueur dans les tentes de Cham.
52 But he led out his own people like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
Il fit ainsi partir son peuple comme des brebis, et le guida comme un troupeau dans le désert,
53 He led them safely, so that they weren’t afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
et le mena sûrement, et ils furent sans crainte, et la mer recouvrit leurs adversaires.
54 He brought them to the border of his sanctuary, to this mountain, which his right hand had taken.
Et Il les fit arriver dans ses limites saintes, à cette montagne que sa droite conquit;
55 He also drove out the nations before them, allotted them for an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
et devant eux Il chassa les nations, et les leur fit échoir en portion d'héritage, et Il établit dans leurs tentes les tribus d'Israël.
56 Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God, and didn’t keep his testimonies,
Mais, rebelles ils tentèrent Dieu, le Très-haut, et ne gardèrent point ses commandements;
57 but turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers. They were twisted like a deceitful bow.
ils furent déserteurs et perfides, comme leurs pères; ils tournèrent comme un arc trompeur;
58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their engraved images.
ils excitèrent sa colère par leurs hauts-lieux, et sa jalousie par leurs idoles.
59 When God heard this, he was angry, and greatly abhorred Israel,
Dieu l'entendit, et fut irrité, et conçut pour Israël une grande aversion.
60 so that he abandoned the tent of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men,
Alors Il quitta la demeure de Silo, la tente qu'il avait dressée parmi les hommes,
61 and delivered his strength into captivity, his glory into the adversary’s hand.
et Il laissa sa gloire s'en aller captive, et sa majesté tomber aux mains de l'ennemi,
62 He also gave his people over to the sword, and was angry with his inheritance.
et Il livra son peuple à l'épée, et contre son héritage Il fut irrité;
63 Fire devoured their young men. Their virgins had no wedding song.
le feu dévora ses jeunes hommes, et ses vierges ne furent plus chantées;
64 Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows couldn’t weep.
ses prêtres succombèrent à l'épée, et ses veuves ne pleurèrent pas.
65 Then the Lord awakened as one out of sleep, like a mighty man who shouts by reason of wine.
Alors, comme celui qui a dormi, le Seigneur s'éveilla, tel que le héros dont le vin avait triomphé;
66 He struck his adversaries backward. He put them to a perpetual reproach.
et Il repoussa ses ennemis, et les chargea d'une honte éternelle.
67 Moreover he rejected the tent of Joseph, and didn’t choose the tribe of Ephraim,
Cependant Il répudia la tente de Joseph, et n'élut point la tribu d'Ephraïm;
68 But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he loved.
et Il élut la tribu de Juda, la montagne de Sion qu'il aimait.
69 He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which he has established forever.
Et Il affermit son sanctuaire à l'égal des Cieux, à l'égal de la terre, dont Il posa les fondements éternels;
70 He also chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds;
et Il élut David, son serviteur, et le tira des parcs des troupeaux;
71 from following the ewes that have their young, he brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and Israel, his inheritance.
Il lui fit quitter les brebis qui allaitent, pour être le pasteur de Jacob, son peuple, et d'Israël, son héritage.
72 So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
Et il en fut le pasteur avec un cœur pur, et d'une main prudente il le conduisit.
