Genesis 34
1 Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
Et Dina, fille de Léa de qui elle était née à Jacob, sortit pour visiter les filles du pays.
2 Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. He took her, lay with her, and humbled her.
Et elle fut aperçue de Sichem, fils de Hémor, le Hévite, prince du pays, qui l'enleva et coucha avec elle et la déshonora.
3 His soul joined to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young lady, and spoke kindly to the young lady.
Et son cœur était épris de Dina, fille de Jacob, et il aimait la jeune fille, et lui parlait à toucher son cœur.
4 Shechem spoke to his father, Hamor, saying, “Get me this young lady as a wife.”
Et Sichem s'adressa à Hémor, son père, et dit: Procure-moi cette jeune fille pour femme.
5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; and his sons were with his livestock in the field. Jacob held his peace until they came.
Et Jacob apprit qu'il avait déshonoré Dina, sa fille; or ses fils étaient aux champs avec ses troupeaux, et Jacob se tut jusqu'à leur retour.
6 Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to talk with him.
Alors Hémor, père de Sichem, se rendit chez Jacob pour lui parler.
7 The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing that ought not to be done.
Et aussitôt informés, les fils de Jacob revinrent des champs; et ces hommes furent chagrinés et fort irrités de ce qu'il eût commis en Israël une infamie en couchant avec la fille de Jacob, ce qui ne devait pas se faire.
8 Hamor talked with them, saying, “The soul of my son, Shechem, longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.
Alors Hémor leur parla en ces termes: Le cœur de Sichem, mon fils, s'est attaché à votre fille: accordez-la-lui pour femme.
9 Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
Et alliez-vous avec nous, donnez-nous vos filles et épousez les nôtres;
10 You shall dwell with us, and the land will be before you. Live and trade in it, and get possessions in it.”
et demeurez avec nous; le pays vous étant ouvert, fixez-vous-y, et y faites vos affaires et y devenez propriétaires!
11 Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you will tell me I will give.
Et Sichem dit au père et aux frères de Dina: Que je trouve grâce à vos yeux, et ce que vous me direz je le donnerai:
12 Ask me a great amount for a dowry, and I will give whatever you ask of me, but give me the young lady as a wife.”
imposez-moi fortement pour la dot et le présent nuptial, et je paierai ainsi que vous fixerez; mais accordez-moi la jeune fille pour femme.
13 The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit when they spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,
Alors les fils de Jacob dans leur réponse à Sichem et à Hémor, son père, usèrent de supercherie, ainsi que dans leurs discours, parce qu'il avait déshonoré Dina leur sœur,
14 and said to them, “We can’t do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that is a reproach to us.
et leur dirent: Nous ne saurions faire ceci que de donner notre sœur à un incirconcis, car ce serait un opprobre pour nous.
15 Only on this condition will we consent to you. If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised,
Nous ne consentirons à votre demande que sous une condition, c'est que vous vous assimiliez à nous en circoncisant tous vos mâles:
16 then will we give our daughters to you; and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
pour lors nous vous donnerons nos filles, nous prendrons vos filles et nous demeurerons avec vous et formerons un seul peuple.
17 But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our sister, and we will be gone.”
Que si vous refusez de nous écouter et de vous faire circoncire, nous prendrons notre fille et nous en irons.
18 Their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.
Et ces propositions agréèrent à Hémor et à Sichem, fils de Hémor.
19 The young man didn’t wait to do this thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter, and he was honored above all the house of his father.
Et le jeune homme ne balança pas à s'exécuter parce qu'il avait de l'inclination pour la fille de Jacob; et il était plus honoré que personne dans la maison de son père.
20 Hamor and Shechem, his son, came to the gate of their city, and talked with the men of their city, saying,
Alors Hémor et Sichem, son fils, se rendirent à la porte de leur ville et parlèrent aux hommes de leur ville en ces termes:
21 “These men are peaceful with us. Therefore let them live in the land and trade in it. For behold, the land is large enough for them. Let’s take their daughters to us for wives, and let’s give them our daughters.
Ces hommes se montrent bien en tout avec nous; il faut donc les laisser habiter le pays et y faire leurs affaires, et voici, le pays, vaste dans les deux sens, leur est ouvert, nous prendrons leurs filles pour femmes et nous sa leur marierons nos filles.
22 Only on this condition will the men consent to us to live with us, to become one people, if every male among us is circumcised, as they are circumcised.
Mais ces hommes ne consentiront à demeurer avec nous pour former un seul peuple qu'autant que tous nos mâles seront circoncis, comme ils sont eux-mêmes circoncis.
23 Won’t their livestock and their possessions and all their animals be ours? Only let’s give our consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”
Leurs troupeaux et leurs biens et tout leur bétail ne seront-ils pas à nous? Seulement acceptons leur condition, afin qu'ils restent chez nous.
24 All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor, and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
Et tous ceux qui parurent à la porte de la ville écoutèrent Hémor et Sichem, son fils, et se firent circoncire, tous les mâles qui parurent à la porte de la ville.
25 On the third day, when they were sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males.
Et le troisième jour, comme ils ressentaient les douleurs, les deux fils de Jacob, Siméon et Lévi, frères de Dina, prirent chacun son épée et attaquèrent la ville en sécurité et égorgèrent tous les mâles,
26 They killed Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went away.
et ils passèrent aussi au fil de l'épée Hémor et Sichem, son fils, et retirèrent Dina de la maison de Sichem et partirent.
27 Jacob’s sons came on the dead, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
Cependant les fils de Jacob se jetèrent sur les blessés et pillèrent la ville à cause du déshonneur fait à leur sœur;
28 They took their flocks, their herds, their donkeys, that which was in the city, that which was in the field,
et ils enlevèrent le gros et le menu bétail, et leurs ânes et ce qui était dans la ville, et ce qui était dans les champs,
29 and all their wealth. They took captive all their little ones and their wives, and took as plunder everything that was in the house.
et ils emmenèrent comme butin toutes leurs richesses et tous leurs enfants et leurs femmes, et pillèrent tout ce qui était dans les maisons.
30 Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.”
Alors Jacob dit à Siméon et à Lévi: Vous me perdez en me mettant en mauvaise odeur auprès des habitants du pays des Cananéens et des Phériziens. Or je ne forme qu'une poignée d'hommes, et ils se ligueront contre moi, et ils me mettront en déroute, et je serai exterminé moi et ma maison.
31 They said, “Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute?”
Et ils dirent: Fallait-il traiter notre sœur comme une prostituée?
