Deuteronomy 2
1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Yahweh spoke to me; and we encircled Mount Seir many days.
Faisant donc volte-face nous partîmes pour le désert du côté de la Mer aux Algues, comme l'Éternel me l'avait dit, et nous tournâmes longtemps autour de la montagne de Séir.
2 Yahweh spoke to me, saying,
Et l'Éternel me parla en ces termes:
3 “You have encircled this mountain long enough. Turn northward.
Vous avez assez tourné autour de cette montagne, dirigez-vous vers le Nord.
4 Command the people, saying, ‘You are to pass through the border of your brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore be careful.
Et donne au peuple cet ordre: Vous allez passer à la frontière de vos frères, les fils d'Esaü, établis en Séir, et ils ont peur de vous; aussi tenez-vous bien sur vos gardes!
5 Don’t contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.
N'entrez pas en conflit avec eux, car je ne vous donnerai rien de leur pays, pas même l'espace de la plante d'un pied, car j'ai donné les montagnes de Séir en propriété à Esaü.
6 You shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat. You shall also buy water from them for money, that you may drink.’”
Vous achèterez d'eux des vivres à prix d'argent pour avoir à manger, et aussi l'eau vous l'achèterez d'eux à prix d'argent pour votre boisson;
7 For Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years, Yahweh your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.
car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, t'a béni dans tout le travail de tes mains: Il a surveillé ton voyage dans ce grand désert: voici quarante ans que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, a été avec toi, tu n'as manqué de rien.
8 So we passed by from our brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion Geber. We turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
C'est pourquoi nous passâmes outre à distance de nos frères, les fils d'Esaü, établis en Séir, du chemin de la plaine, d'Elath et de Etsion-Géber, et tournant nous prîmes la direction du désert de Moab.
9 Yahweh said to me, “Don’t bother Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give you any of his land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the children of Lot for a possession.”
Alors l'Éternel me dit: N'attaque pas Moab et n'engage pas le combat avec lui, car de son pays je ne t'accorde rien en propriété, puisque j'ai donné Ar en propriété aux fils de Lot.
10 (The Emim lived there before, a great and numerous people, and tall as the Anakim.
(Il était jadis habité par les Emites, peuple grand et nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Anakites;
11 These also are considered to be Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.
ils sont aussi regardés comme des géants, ainsi que les Anakites; et les Moabites les appellent Emites.
12 The Horites also lived in Seir in the past, but the children of Esau succeeded them. They destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place, as Israel did to the land of his possession, which Yahweh gave to them.)
Et jadis Séir fut habité par les Horites, et les fils d'Esaü les expulsèrent, et les exterminèrent de devant eux, et s'établirent à leur place, comme l'ont fait les Israélites dans leur pays de conquête que leur a donné l'Éternel.)
13 “Now rise up and cross over the brook Zered.” We went over the brook Zered.
Maintenant debout! et passez le torrent de Zared. Nous passâmes donc le torrent de Zared.
14 The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea until we had come over the brook Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as Yahweh swore to them.
Et le temps écoulé depuis notre départ de Cadès-Barnéa jusqu'à notre passage du torrent de Zared fut de trente-huit ans, ayant duré jusqu'à ce que toute la génération des hommes de guerre fut disparue du camp, comme l'Éternel leur en avait fait le serment.
15 Moreover Yahweh’s hand was against them, to destroy them from the middle of the camp, until they were consumed.
Et la main de l'Éternel aussi agit contre eux pour les faire disparaître du milieu du camp jusqu'à leur extinction.
16 So, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
Et lorsque tous les gens de guerre furent disparus du peuple, étant morts,
17 Yahweh spoke to me, saying,
l'Éternel me parla en ces termes:
18 “You are to pass over Ar, the border of Moab, today.
Tu vas passer maintenant à la frontière de Moab, à Ar,
19 When you come near the border of the children of Ammon, don’t bother them, nor contend with them; for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession, because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.”
et te rapprocher des fils d'Ammon; ne les attaque pas et n'entre pas en conflit avec eux; car du pays des fils d'Ammon je ne t'accorde rien en propriété, puisque je l'ai donné en propriété aux fils de Lot.
20 (That also is considered a land of Rephaim. Rephaim lived there in the past, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,
(Il est aussi regardé comme un pays de géants; jadis des géants l'habitaient, et les Ammonites les appellent Zamsumites,
21 a great people, many, and tall, as the Anakim; but Yahweh destroyed them from before Israel, and they succeeded them, and lived in their place,
peuple grand et nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Anakites, et l'Éternel les extermina de devant eux, et ils les expulsèrent et s'établirent à leur place,
22 as he did for the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place even to this day.
comme Il avait fait pour les fils d'Esaü établis en Séir, lorsqu'il détruisit les Horites devant eux; et ils les chassèrent et se sont établis à leur place jusqu'aujourd'hui.
23 Then the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.)
Et les Avites qui habitaient dans des bourgs jusqu'à Gaza furent détruits par des Caphthorites venus de Caphthor, qui s'établirent à leur place.)
24 “Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
Levez-vous, partez et passez le torrent de l'Arnon. Voici, je livre entre tes mains Sihon, Roi de Hesbon, l'Amoréen et son pays: commence! fais-en la conquête, et engage le combat avec lui.
25 Today I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole sky, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.”
Aujourd'hui je commence à inspirer de toi une terreur et une peur telle à tous les peuples qui sont sous le ciel entier, qu'au bruit de ta renommée ils seront terrifiés et angoissés par toi.
26 I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
Alors, du désert de Kedémoth, j'envoyai des messagers à Sihon, Roi de Hesbon, avec des paroles de paix, en ces termes:
27 “Let me pass through your land. I will go along by the highway. I will turn neither to the right hand nor to the left.
Laisse-moi passer par ton pays! je ne suivrai que la grand'route, sans m'écarter ni à droite ni à gauche.
28 You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink. Just let me pass through on my feet,
Tu me vendras des vivres à prix d'argent pour ma nourriture, et tu me fourniras de l'eau contre de l'argent pour ma boisson; je ne passerai que de mes pieds;
29 as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me, until I pass over the Jordan into the land which Yahweh our God gives us.”
ainsi en ont agi avec moi les fils d'Esaü établis en Séir, et les Moabites établis à Ar, jusqu'à ce qu'ayant passé le Jourdain je sois dans le pays que nous donne l'Éternel, notre Dieu.
30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today.
Mais Sihon, Roi de Hesbon, ne voulut pas nous laisser passer chez lui; car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, avait roidi son esprit et endurci son cœur pour le livrer entre tes mains, comme [on le voit] aujourd'hui.
31 Yahweh said to me, “Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before you. Begin to possess, that you may inherit his land.”
Et l'Éternel me dit: Vois, je commence aujourd'hui à te livrer Sihon et son pays; commence la conquête par la conquête de son pays.
32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz.
Et Sihon sortit à notre rencontre, lui et tout son peuple, pour nous attaquer à Jahaths.
33 Yahweh our God delivered him up before us; and we struck him, his sons, and all his people.
Mais l'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous le livra, et nous le vainquîmes lui et ses fils et tout son peuple, nous emparant en même temps de toutes ses villes;
34 We took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones. We left no one remaining.
et nous dévouâmes toute ville, hommes, femmes et enfants, sans laisser survivre aucun réchappé.
35 Only the livestock we took for plunder for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities which we had taken.
Seulement nous fîmes notre butin du bétail et de la dépouille des villes prises par nous.
36 From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. Yahweh our God delivered up all before us.
Depuis Aroër située sur le bord du torrent de l'Arnon et la ville dans la vallée, jusqu'à Galaad il n'y eut pas une ville trop haut placée pour nous. L'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous livra tout.
37 Only to the land of the children of Ammon you didn’t come near: all the banks of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill country, and wherever Yahweh our God forbade us.
Seulement tu ne t'es pas approché du pays des Ammonites, de tous les bords du torrent de Jabbok, ni des villes de la montagne ni d'aucun des lieux que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous avait interdits.
