Luke 1
1 Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,
私たちの間ですでに確信されている出来事については、初めからの目撃者で、みことばに仕える者となった人々が、私たちに伝えたそのとおりを、多くの人が記事にまとめて書き上げようと、すでに試みておりますので、
2 even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us,
3 it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;
私も、すべてのことを初めから綿密に調べておりますから、あなたのために、順序を立てて書いて差し上げるのがよいと思います。尊敬するテオピロ殿。
4 that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.
それによって、すでに教えを受けられた事がらが正確な事実であることを、よくわかっていただきたいと存じます。
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
ユダヤの王ヘロデの時に、アビヤの組の者でザカリヤという祭司がいた。彼の妻はアロンの子孫で、名をエリサベツといった。
6 They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
ふたりとも、神の御前に正しく、主のすべての戒めと定めを落度なく踏み行なっていた。
7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.
エリサベツは不妊の女だったので、彼らには子がなく、ふたりとももう年をとっていた。
8 Now while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division
さて、ザカリヤは、自分の組が当番で、神の御前に祭司の務めをしていたが、
9 according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
祭司職の習慣によって、くじを引いたところ、主の神殿にはいって香をたくことになった。
10 The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.
彼が香をたく間、大ぜいの民はみな、外で祈っていた。
11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
ところが、主の使いが彼に現われて、香壇の右に立った。
12 Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.
これを見たザカリヤは不安を覚え、恐怖に襲われたが、
13 But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard. Your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
御使いは彼に言った。「こわがることはない。ザカリヤ。あなたの願いが聞かれたのです。あなたの妻エリサベツは男の子を産みます。名をヨハネとつけなさい。
14 You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.
その子はあなたにとって喜びとなり楽しみとなり、多くの人もその誕生を喜びます。
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.
彼は主の御前にすぐれた者となるからです。彼は、ぶどう酒も強い酒も飲まず、まだ母の胎内にあるときから聖霊に満たされ、
16 He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
そしてイスラエルの多くの子らを、彼らの神である主に立ち返らせます。
17 He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”
彼こそ、エリヤの霊と力で主の前ぶれをし、父たちの心を子どもたちに向けさせ、逆らう者を義人の心に立ち戻らせ、こうして、整えられた民を主のために用意するのです。」
18 Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”
そこで、ザカリヤは御使いに言った。「私は何によってそれを知ることができましょうか。私ももう年寄りですし、妻も年をとっております。」
19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
御使いは答えて言った。「私は神の御前に立つガブリエルです。あなたに話をし、この喜びのおとずれを伝えるように遣わされているのです。
20 Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
ですから、見なさい。これらのことが起こる日までは、あなたは、おしになって、ものが言えなくなります。私のことばを信じなかったからです。私のことばは、その時が来れば実現します。」
21 The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.
人々はザカリヤを待っていたが、神殿であまり暇取るので不思議に思った。
22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.
やがて彼は出て来たが、人々に話をすることができなかった。それで、彼は神殿で幻を見たのだとわかった。ザカリヤは、彼らに合図を続けるだけで、おしのままであった。
23 When the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house.
やがて、務めの期間が終わったので、彼は自分の家に帰った。
24 After these days Elizabeth his wife conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,
その後、妻エリサベツはみごもり、五か月の間引きこもって、こう言った。
25 “Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men.”
「主は、人中で私の恥を取り除こうと心にかけられ、今、私をこのようにしてくださいました。」
26 Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
ところで、その六か月目に、御使いガブリエルが、神から遣わされてガリラヤのナザレという町のひとりの処女のところに来た。
27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Mary.
この処女は、ダビデの家系のヨセフという人のいいなずけで、名をマリヤといった。
28 Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!”
御使いは、はいって来ると、マリヤに言った。「おめでとう、恵まれた方。主があなたとともにおられます。」
29 But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.
しかし、マリヤはこのことばに、ひどくとまどって、これはいったい何のあいさつかと考え込んだ。
30 The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
すると御使いが言った。「こわがることはない。マリヤ。あなたは神から恵みを受けたのです。
31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him ‘Jesus.’
ご覧なさい。あなたはみごもって、男の子を産みます。名をイエスとつけなさい。
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
その子はすぐれた者となり、いと高き方の子と呼ばれます。また、神である主は彼にその父ダビデの王位をお与えになります。
33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.” (aiōn g165)
彼はとこしえにヤコブの家を治め、その国は終わることがありません。」 (aiōn g165)
34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?”
そこで、マリヤは御使いに言った。「どうしてそのようなことになりえましょう。私はまだ男の人を知りませんのに。」
35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.
御使いは答えて言った。「聖霊があなたの上に臨み、いと高き方の力があなたをおおいます。それゆえ、生まれる者は、聖なる者、神の子と呼ばれます。
36 Behold, Elizabeth your relative also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
ご覧なさい。あなたの親類のエリサベツも、あの年になって男の子を宿しています。不妊の女といわれていた人なのに、今はもう六か月です。
37 For nothing spoken by God is impossible.”
神にとって不可能なことは一つもありません。」
38 Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
マリヤは言った。「ほんとうに、私は主のはしためです。どうぞ、あなたのおことばどおりこの身になりますように。」こうして御使いは彼女から去って行った。
39 Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah,
そのころ、マリヤは立って、山地にあるユダの町に急いだ。
40 and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.
そしてザカリヤの家に行って、エリサベツにあいさつした。
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
エリサベツがマリヤのあいさつを聞いたとき、子が胎内でおどり、エリサベツは聖霊に満たされた。
42 She called out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
そして大声をあげて言った。「あなたは女の中の祝福された方。あなたの胎の実も祝福されています。
43 Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
私の主の母が私のところに来られるとは、何ということでしょう。
44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy!
ほんとうに、あなたのあいさつの声が私の耳にはいったとき、私の胎内で子どもが喜んでおどりました。
45 Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!”
主によって語られたことは必ず実現すると信じきった人は、何と幸いなことでしょう。」
46 Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.
マリヤは言った。 「わがたましいは主をあがめ、
47 My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,
わが霊は、わが救い主なる神を喜びたたえます。
48 for he has looked at the humble state of his servant. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.
主はこの卑しいはしために 目を留めてくださったからです。 ほんとうに、これから後、どの時代の人々も、 私をしあわせ者と思うでしょう。
49 For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name.
力ある方が、 私に大きなことをしてくださいました。 その御名はきよく、
50 His mercy is for generations and generations on those who fear him.
そのあわれみは、主を恐れかしこむ者に、 代々にわたって及びます。
51 He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
主は、御腕をもって力強いわざをなし、 心の思いの高ぶっている者を追い散らし、
52 He has put down princes from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly.
権力ある者を王位から引き降ろされます。 低い者を高く引き上げ、
53 He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty.
飢えた者を良いもので満ち足らせ、 富む者を何も持たせないで追い返されました。
54 He has given help to Israel, his servant, that he might remember mercy,
主はそのあわれみをいつまでも忘れないで、 そのしもべイスラエルをお助けになりました。
私たちの先祖たち、アブラハムとその子孫に 語られたとおりです。」 (aiōn g165)
56 Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her house.
マリヤは三か月ほどエリサベツと暮らして、家に帰った。
57 Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she gave birth to a son.
さて月が満ちて、エリサベツは男の子を産んだ。
58 Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her.
近所の人々や親族は、主がエリサベツに大きなあわれみをおかけになったと聞いて、彼女とともに喜んだ。
59 On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
さて八日目に、人々は幼子に割礼するためにやって来て、幼子を父の名にちなんでザカリヤと名づけようとしたが、
60 His mother answered, “Not so; but he will be called John.”
母は答えて、「いいえ、そうではなくて、ヨハネという名にしなければなりません。」と言った。
61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”
彼らは彼女に、「あなたの親族にはそのような名の人はひとりもいません。」と言った。
62 They made signs to his father, what he would have him called.
そして、身振りで父親に合図して、幼子に何という名をつけるつもりかと尋ねた。
63 He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, “His name is John.” They all marveled.
すると、彼は書き板を持って来させて、「彼の名はヨハネ。」と書いたので、人々はみな驚いた。
64 His mouth was opened immediately and his tongue freed, and he spoke, blessing God.
すると、たちどころに、彼の口が開け、舌は解け、ものが言えるようになって神をほめたたえた。
65 Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.
そして、近所の人々はみな恐れた。さらにこれらのことの一部始終が、ユダヤの山地全体にも語り伝えられて行った。
66 All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, “What then will this child be?” The hand of the Lord was with him.
聞いた人々はみな、それを心にとどめて、「いったいこの子は何になるのでしょう。」と言った。主の御手が彼とともにあったからである。
67 His father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
さて父ザカリヤは、聖霊に満たされて、預言して言った。
68 “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people;
「ほめたたえよ。イスラエルの神である主を。 主はその民を顧みて、贖いをなし、
69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David
救いの角を、われらのために、 しもべダビデの家に立てられた。
古くから、その聖なる預言者たちの口を通して、 主が話してくださったとおりに。 (aiōn g165)
71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us;
この救いはわれらの敵からの、 すべてわれらを憎む者の手からの救いである。
72 to show mercy toward our fathers, to remember his holy covenant,
主はわれらの父祖たちにあわれみを施し、 その聖なる契約を、
73 the oath which he swore to Abraham our father,
われらの父アブラハムに誓われた誓いを覚えて、
74 to grant to us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, should serve him without fear,
われらを敵の手から救い出し、 われらの生涯のすべての日に、 きよく、正しく、 恐れなく、主の御前に仕えることを許される。
75 in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
76 And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,
幼子よ。あなたもまた、 いと高き方の預言者と呼ばれよう。 主の御前に先立って行き、その道を備え、
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins,
神の民に、罪の赦しによる 救いの知識を与えるためである。
78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the dawn from on high will visit us,
これはわれらの神の深いあわれみによる。 そのあわれみにより、 日の出がいと高き所からわれらを訪れ、
79 to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
暗黒と死の陰にすわる者たちを照らし、 われらの足を平和の道に導く。」
80 The child was growing and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
さて、幼子は成長し、その霊は強くなり、イスラエルの民の前に公に出現する日まで荒野にいた。
