Ecclesiastes 7
1 A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one’s birth.
Más vale la buena reputación que preciosos ungüentos, y más el día de la muerte que el del nacimiento.
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart.
Mejor es ir a la casa del luto que a la casa del festín; pues aquella (recuerda) el fin de todos los hombres, y el viviente se pone a reflexionar.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good.
Mejor es el pesar que la risa, pues la tristeza del rostro es medicina para el corazón.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
El corazón de los sabios está en la casa del luto, y el de los necios en la casa del placer.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Más vale oír la reprensión del sabio, que escuchar el cantar de los necios;
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.
porque como el crepitar de los espinos debajo de la olla, así es la risa de los necios. Y también esto es vanidad.
7 Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding.
Porque la vejación conturba al sabio, y las dádivas corrompen el corazón.
8 Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
Mejor es el fin de una cosa que sus comienzos; y vale más el hombre sufrido que el arrogante.
9 Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
No seas ligero en airarte; la ira reside en el seno de los insensatos.
10 Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this.
No preguntes: “¿Por qué los tiempos antiguos fueron mejores que estos?”, porque no es sabiduría el preguntarlo.
11 Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.
Cosa buena es la sabiduría con bienes materiales, y de gran provecho para los que ven el sol.
12 For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
Escudo es la sabiduría, y escudo es el dinero, pero el conocimiento de la sabiduría tiene la ventaja de dar vida a su poseedor.
13 Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight which he has made crooked?
Considera la obra de Dios: ¿Quién podrá enderezar lo que Él encorvó?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him.
En el día de la prosperidad goza de la prosperidad, y en el día de la adversidad ten presente que Dios hizo al uno como al otro, a fin de que el hombre nada sepa de lo que ha de venir después de Él.
15 All this I have seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing.
Todo lo he visto en los días de mi vanidad: al justo, que perece en medio de su justicia, y al malvado, que vive largo tiempo en medio de sus iniquidades.
16 Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself?
No quieras ser demasiado justo, ni demasiado sabio. ¿Por qué quieres perderte?
17 Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time?
No hagas mucho mal, ni seas insensato. ¿Por qué quieres morir antes de tiempo?
18 It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also don’t withdraw your hand from that; for he who fears God will come out of them all.
Bueno es retener lo uno, sin dejar de tu mano lo otro; porque quien teme a Dios, evita todos esos (excesos).
19 Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.
La sabiduría da al sabio más fuerzas que diez poderosos que hay en la ciudad.
20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and doesn’t sin.
Porque no hay sobre la tierra hombre justo que obre bien y no peque nunca.
21 Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you;
No prestes atención a todas las palabras que se dicen, no sea que oigas a tu siervo hablar mal de ti.
22 for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others.
Pues bien sabe tu conciencia que también tú muchas veces has murmurado de otros.
23 All this I have proved in wisdom. I said, “I will be wise;” but it was far from me.
He probado todo esto por medio de la sabiduría. Me dije “Quiero ser sabio”, mas la (sabiduría) está lejos de mí.
24 That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out?
Lo que se queda lejos y es más profundo, ¿quién podrá alcanzarlo?
25 I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness.
Apliqué mi corazón para conocer, investigar y buscar la sabiduría y la razón de ser (de las cosas), y para conocer la maldad de la insensatez, la necedad y la locura,
26 I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her.
y hallé que más amarga que la muerte es aquella mujer cuyo corazón es lazo y red, y cuyas manos son cadenas. Quien agrada a Dios, escapa de ella, pero el pecador quedará preso en sus lazos.
27 “Behold, I have found this,” says the Preacher, “to one another, to find an explanation
He aquí lo que hallé, dice el Predicador, contemplando una cosa tras otra para averiguar sus razones,
28 which my soul still seeks, but I have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all those.
las cuales busca todavía mi alma, sin poder encontrarlas. Entre mil hallé un hombre, pero no una mujer entre otras tantas mujeres.
29 Behold, I have only found this: that God made mankind upright; but they search for many inventions.”
Pero esto hallé; nótalo bien: Dios creó al hombre recto; mas ellos se entregaron a muchos vanos pensamientos.
