Deuteronomy 7
1 When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you go to possess it, and casts out many nations before you—the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite—seven nations greater and mightier than you;
Lorsque l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura fait entrer dans le pays où tu te rends pour le conquérir; quand il aura écarté de devant toi ces nombreuses peuplades, le Héthéen, le Ghirgachéen, l’Amorréen, le Cananéen, le Phérézéen, le Hévéen et le Jébuséen, sept peuplades plus nombreuses et plus puissantes que toi;
2 and when the LORD your God delivers them up before you, and you strike them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them.
quand l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te les aura livrés et que tu les auras vaincus, tu les frapperas d’anathème. Point de pacte avec eux, point de merci pour eux!
3 You shall not make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to his son, nor shall you take his daughter for your son.
Ne t’allie avec aucun d’eux: ta fille, ne la donne pas à son fils, et sa fille, n’en fais pas l’épouse du tien!
4 For that would turn away your sons from following me, that they may serve other gods. So the LORD’s anger would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly.
Car il détacherait ton fils de moi, et ils adoreraient des divinités étrangères, et la colère du Seigneur s’allumerait contre vous, et il vous aurait bientôt anéantis.
5 But you shall deal with them like this: you shall break down their altars, dash their pillars in pieces, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their engraved images with fire.
Non, voici ce que vous devrez leur faire: vous renverserez leurs autels, vous briserez leurs monuments, vous abattrez leurs bosquets, vous livrerez leurs statues aux flammes.
6 For you are a holy people to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth.
Car tu es un peuple consacré à l’Éternel, ton Dieu: il t’a choisi, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, pour lui être un peuple spécial entre tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre.
7 The LORD didn’t set his love on you nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples;
Si l’Éternel vous a préférés, vous a distingués, ce n’est pas que vous soyez plus nombreux que les autres peuples, car vous êtes le moindre de tous;
8 but because the LORD loves you, and because he desires to keep the oath which he swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
c’est parce que l’Éternel vous aime, parce qu’il est fidèle au serment qu’il a fait à vos aïeux; voilà pourquoi il vous a, d’un bras puissant, arrachés et sauvés de la maison de servitude, de la main de Pharaon, roi d’Egypte.
9 Know therefore that the LORD your God himself is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commandments,
Reconnais donc que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, lui seul est Dieu, un Dieu véridique, fidèle au pacte de bienveillance pour ceux qui l’aiment et obéissent à ses lois, jusqu’à la millième génération;
10 and repays those who hate him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack to him who hates him. He will repay him to his face.
mais qui punit ses ennemis directement, en les faisant périr, et n’ajourne point, à l’égard de son contempteur, le paiement qui lui est dû.
11 You shall therefore keep the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances which I command you today, to do them.
Tu observeras donc la loi, et les décrets et les règles, que je t’ordonne en ce jour d’exécuter.
12 It shall happen, because you listen to these ordinances and keep and do them, that the LORD your God will keep with you the covenant and the loving kindness which he swore to your fathers.
Pour prix de votre obéissance à ces lois et de votre fidélité à les accomplir, l’Éternel, votre Dieu, sera fidèle aussi au pacte de bienveillance qu’il a juré à vos pères.
13 He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your body and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your livestock and the young of your flock, in the land which he swore to your fathers to give you.
Il t’aimera, te bénira, te multipliera, il bénira le fruit de tes entrailles et le fruit de ton sol, ton blé, ton vin et ton huile, les produits de ton gros et de ton menu bétail, dans le pays qu’il a juré à tes pères de te donner.
14 You will be blessed above all peoples. There won’t be male or female barren amongst you, or amongst your livestock.
Tu seras béni entre tous les peuples; parmi toi comme parmi tes bêtes, aucun sexe ne sera stérile.
15 The LORD will take away from you all sickness; and he will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you know, on you, but will lay them on all those who hate you.
L’Éternel écartera de toi tout fléau; et toutes ces funestes plaies de l’Egypte, que tu connais bien, ce n’est pas à toi qu’il les infligera, mais à tes adversaires.
16 You shall consume all the peoples whom the LORD your God shall deliver to you. Your eye shall not pity them. You shall not serve their gods; for that would be a snare to you.
Tu anéantiras donc tous les peuples que te livre l’Éternel, ton Dieu, sans laisser ton œil s’attendrir sur eux, de peur que tu n’adores leurs divinités; car ce serait un piège pour toi.
17 If you shall say in your heart, “These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?”
Peut-être diras-tu en ton cœur: "Ces nations-là sont plus considérables que moi; comment pourrai-je les déposséder?"
18 you shall not be afraid of them. You shall remember well what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt:
Ne les crains point! Souviens-toi sans cesse de ce que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, a fait à Pharaon et à toute l’Egypte;
19 the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs, the wonders, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which the LORD your God brought you out. So shall the LORD your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.
des grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues; de ces signes et de ces prodiges, de cette main puissante et de ce bras étendu, par lesquels t’a émancipé l’Éternel, ton Dieu. Ainsi fera-t-il de tous les peuples que tu pourrais craindre.
20 Moreover the LORD your God will send the hornet amongst them, until those who are left, and hide themselves, perish from before you.
De plus, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, suscitera contre eux les frelons, pour achever les survivants qui se seraient dérobés à toi.
21 You shall not be scared of them; for the LORD your God is amongst you, a great and awesome God.
Ne tremble donc pas devant eux, car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, est au milieu de toi, un Dieu grand et redoutable!
22 The LORD your God will cast out those nations before you little by little. You may not consume them at once, lest the animals of the field increase on you.
L’Éternel, ton Dieu, écartera ces peuples de devant toi, mais peu à peu; tu ne pourras pas les détruire rapidement, car les bêtes sauvages se multiplieraient autour de toi.
23 But the LORD your God will deliver them up before you, and will confuse them with a great confusion, until they are destroyed.
Mais l’Éternel, ton Dieu, les mettra à ta merci; il répandra parmi eux un grand trouble, jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient détruits.
24 He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name perish from under the sky. No one will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them.
Il mettra leurs rois dans ta main, et tu effaceras leur mémoire sous le ciel; pas un ne te tiendra tête, de sorte que tu les extermineras tous.
25 You shall burn the engraved images of their gods with fire. You shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourself, lest you be snared in it; for it is an abomination to the LORD your God.
Les images de leurs divinités, vous les détruirez par le feu. Ne cède pas à la tentation de garder l’argent ou l’or qui les couvre, il ferait ton malheur; car il est en abomination à l’Éternel, ton Dieu,
26 You shall not bring an abomination into your house and become a devoted thing like it. You shall utterly detest it. You shall utterly abhor it; for it is a devoted thing.
et tu ne dois pas apporter une abomination dans ta demeure, tu serais anathème comme elle: déteste-la, repousse-la avec horreur, elle est vouée à l’anathème!
