< Psalms 45 >
1 For the Chief Musician. Set to “The Lilies.” A contemplation by the sons of Korah. A wedding song. My heart overflows with a noble theme. I recite my verses for the king. My tongue is like the pen of a skilful writer.
For the end, for alternate [strains] by the sons of Core; for instruction, a Song concerning the beloved. My heart has uttered a good matter: I declare my works to the king: my tongue is the pen of a quick writer.
2 You are the most excellent of the sons of men. Grace has anointed your lips, therefore God has blessed you forever.
You are more beautiful than the sons of men: grace has been shed forth on your lips: therefore God has blessed you for ever.
3 Strap your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, in your splendour and your majesty.
Gird your sword upon your thigh, O Mighty One, in your comeliness, and in your beauty;
4 In your majesty ride on victoriously on behalf of truth, humility, and righteousness. Let your right hand display awesome deeds.
and bend [your bow], and prosper, and reign, because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and your right hand shall guide you wonderfully.
5 Your arrows are sharp. The nations fall under you, with arrows in the heart of the king’s enemies.
Your weapons are sharpened, Mighty One, (the nations shall fall under you) [they are] in the heart of the king's enemies.
6 Your throne, God, is forever and ever. A sceptre of equity is the sceptre of your kingdom.
Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of your kingdom is a sceptre of righteousness.
7 You have loved righteousness, and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.
You have loved righteousness, and hated iniquity: therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your fellows.
8 All your garments smell like myrrh, aloes, and cassia. Out of ivory palaces stringed instruments have made you glad.
Myrrh, and stacte, and cassia [are exhaled] from your garments, [and] out of the ivory palaces,
9 Kings’ daughters are amongst your honourable women. At your right hand the queen stands in gold of Ophir.
with which kings' daughters have gladdened you for your honour: the queen stood by on your right hand, clothed in vesture wrought with gold, [and] arrayed in various colours.
10 Listen, daughter, consider, and turn your ear. Forget your own people, and also your father’s house.
Hear, O daughter, and see, and incline your ear; forget also your people, and your father's house.
11 So the king will desire your beauty, honour him, for he is your lord.
Because the king has desired your beauty; for he is your Lord.
12 The daughter of Tyre comes with a gift. The rich amongst the people entreat your favour.
And the daughter of Tyre shall adore him with gifts; the rich of the people of the land shall supplicate your favour.
13 The princess inside is all glorious. Her clothing is interwoven with gold.
All her glory [is that] of the daughter of the king of Esebon, robed [as she is] in golden fringed garments,
14 She shall be led to the king in embroidered work. The virgins, her companions who follow her, shall be brought to you.
in embroidered [clothing]: virgins shall be brought to the king after her: her fellows shall be brought to you.
15 With gladness and rejoicing they shall be led. They shall enter into the king’s palace.
They shall be brought with gladness and exultation: they shall be led into the king's temple.
16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers. You shall make them princes in all the earth.
Instead of your fathers children are born to you: you shall make them princes over all the earth.
17 I will make your name to be remembered in all generations. Therefore the peoples shall give you thanks forever and ever.
They shall make mention of your name from generation to generation: therefore shall the nations give thanks to you for ever, even for ever and ever.
