Romans 8
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus;
Il n'y a donc maintenant aucune condamnation pour ceux qui sont en Jésus-Christ,
2 for the Spirit's Law-- telling of Life in Christ Jesus--has set me free from the Law that deals only with sin and death.
parce que la loi de l'esprit de vie m'a affranchi, en Jésus-Christ, de la loi du péché et de la mort.
3 For what was impossible to the Law--powerless as it was because it acted through frail humanity--God effected. Sending His own Son in a body like that of sinful human nature and as a sacrifice for sin, He pronounced sentence upon sin in human nature;
Car ce qui était impossible à la loi, attendu que la chair la rendait impuissante. Dieu l'a fait! En envoyant, à cause du péché, son propre Fils dans une chair semblable à notre chair de péché, il a condamné le péché dans la chair,
4 in order that in our case the requirements of the Law might be fully met. For our lives are regulated not by our earthly, but by our spiritual natures.
afin que la justice prescrite par la loi fût accomplie en nous, qui marchons non selon la chair, mais selon l'esprit.
5 For if men are controlled by their earthly natures, they give their minds to earthly things. If they are controlled by their spiritual natures, they give their minds to spiritual things.
En effet, ceux qui vivent selon la chair s'attachent aux choses de la chair; mais ceux qui vivent selon l'esprit, s'attachent aux choses de l'esprit.
6 Because for the mind to be given up to earthly things means death; but for it to be given up to spiritual things means Life and peace.
Or, les sentiments que fait naître la chair produisent la mort; mais les sentiments que fait naître l'esprit produisent la vie et la paix.
7 Abandonment to earthly things is a state of enmity to God. Such a mind does not submit to God's Law, and indeed cannot do so.
L'attachement à la chair, en effet, est inimitié contre Dieu; car la chair ne se soumet pas à la loi de Dieu, et même elle ne le peut pas.
8 And those whose hearts are absorbed in earthly things cannot please God.
Or, ceux qui vivent selon la chair ne peuvent plaire à Dieu.
9 You, however, are not devoted to earthly, but to spiritual things, if the Spirit of God is really dwelling in you; whereas if any man has not the Spirit of Christ, such a one does not belong to Him.
Pour vous, vous ne vivez pas selon la chair, mais selon l'esprit, s'il est vrai que l'Esprit de Dieu habite en vous; mais si quelqu'un n'a pas l'esprit de Christ, il n'est point à lui.
10 But if Christ is in you, though your body must die because of sin, yet your spirit has Life because of righteousness.
Si donc Christ est en vous, le corps est mort à cause du péché, mais l'esprit est vivant à cause de la justice.
11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised up Jesus from the dead is dwelling in you, He who raised up Christ from the dead will give Life also to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who dwells in you.
Et si l'Esprit de Celui qui a ressuscité Jésus d'entre les morts habite en vous, Celui qui a ressuscité Jésus-Christ d'entre les morts rendra aussi la vie à vos corps mortels, par son Esprit qui habite en vous.
12 Therefore, brethren, it is not to our lower natures that we are under obligation that we should live by their rule.
Ainsi donc, frères, nous ne sommes point redevables à la chair, pour vivre selon la chair.
13 For if you so live, death is near; but if, through being under the sway of the spirit, you are putting your old bodily habits to death, you will live.
En effet, si vous vivez selon la chair, vous devez mourir; mais si, par l'esprit, vous faites mourir les oeuvres du corps, vous vivrez.
14 For those who are led by God's Spirit are, all of them, God's sons.
Car tous ceux qui sont conduits par l'Esprit de Dieu, sont fils de Dieu.
15 You have not for the second time acquired the consciousness of being--a consciousness which fills you with terror. But you have acquired a deep inward conviction of having been adopted as sons--a conviction which prompts us to cry aloud, "Abba! our Father!"
Aussi bien, vous n'avez pas reçu un esprit de servitude pour être encore dans la crainte; mais vous avez reçu l'esprit d'adoption, par lequel nous crions: Abba, c'est-à-dire: Père!
16 The Spirit Himself bears witness, along with our own spirits, to the fact that we are children of God;
L'Esprit lui-même rend témoignage à notre esprit que nous sommes enfants de Dieu.
17 and if children, then heirs too--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ; if indeed we are sharers in Christ's sufferings, in order that we may also be sharers in His glory.
Et si nous sommes enfants, nous sommes aussi héritiers: héritiers de Dieu et cohéritiers de Christ, si toutefois nous souffrons avec lui, afin que nous soyons aussi glorifiés avec lui.
18 Why, what we now suffer I count as nothing in comparison with the glory which is soon to be manifested in us.
Or, j'estime qu'il n'y a aucune proportion entre les souffrances du temps présent et la gloire à venir qui doit être manifestée en nous.
19 For all creation, gazing eagerly as if with outstretched neck, is waiting and longing to see the manifestation of the sons of God.
En effet, la création attend, avec un ardent désir, que les enfants de Dieu soient manifestés.
20 For the Creation fell into subjection to failure and unreality (not of its own choice, but by the will of Him who so subjected it).
Car la création a été assujettie à la vanité, non pas volontairement, mais à cause de celui qui l'y a assujettie.
21 Yet there was always the hope that at last the Creation itself would also be set free from the thraldom of decay so as to enjoy the liberty that will attend the glory of the children of God.
Et elle espère qu'elle aussi sera délivrée de la servitude de la corruption, pour avoir part à la liberté glorieuse des enfants de Dieu.
22 For we know that the whole of Creation is groaning together in the pains of childbirth until this hour.
Car nous savons que, jusqu'à ce jour, toute la création ensemble soupire, et qu'elle est comme en travail;
23 And more than that, we ourselves, though we possess the Spirit as a foretaste and pledge of the glorious future, yet we ourselves inwardly sigh, as we wait and long for open recognition as sons through the deliverance of our bodies.
et non seulement elle, mais nous, qui avons reçu les prémices de l'Esprit, nous soupirons, nous aussi, en nous-mêmes, attendant l'adoption, la rédemption de notre corps.
24 It is in hope that we have been saved. But an object of hope is such no longer when it is present to view; for when a man has a thing before his eyes, how can he be said to hope for it?
En effet, c'est en espérance que nous sommes sauvés; or, quand on voit ce qu'on espérait, ce n'est plus de l'espérance: ce que l'on voit, pourquoi l'espérer encore?
25 But if we hope for something which we do not see, then we eagerly and patiently wait for it.
Mais si nous espérons ce que nous ne voyons pas, nous l'attendons avec patience.
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness; for we do not know what prayers to offer nor in what way to offer them. But the Spirit Himself pleads for us in yearnings that can find no words,
De même aussi, l'Esprit vient en aide à notre faiblesse. Car nous ne savons pas ce que nous devons demander, pour prier comme il faut; mais l'Esprit lui-même intercède pour nous par des soupirs inexprimables.
27 and the Searcher of hearts knows what the Spirit's meaning is, because His intercessions for God's people are in harmony with God's will.
Et Celui qui sonde les coeurs sait quelle est la pensée de l'Esprit, parce que c'est selon Dieu qu'il intercède en faveur des saints.
28 Now we know that for those who love God all things are working together for good--for those, I mean, whom with deliberate purpose He has called.
Or, nous savons que toutes choses concourent au bien de ceux qui aiment Dieu, de ceux qui sont appelés, selon le dessein qu'il en avait formé.
29 For those whom He has known beforehand He has also pre-destined to bear the likeness of His Son, that He might be the Eldest in a vast family of brothers;
Car ceux qu'il a connus d'avance, il les a aussi prédestinés à être conformes à l'image de son Fils, afin que celui-ci soit le premier-né de plusieurs frères.
30 and those whom He has pre-destined He also has called; and those whom He has called He has also declared free from guilt; and those whom He has declared free from guilt He has also crowned with glory.
Et ceux qu'il a prédestinés, il les a aussi appelés; ceux qu'il a appelés, il les a aussi justifiés; et ceux qu'il a justifiés, il les a aussi glorifiés.
31 What then shall we say to this? If God is on our side, who is there to appear against us?
Que dirons-nous donc après cela? Si Dieu est pour nous, qui sera contre nous?
32 He who did not withhold even His own Son, but gave Him up for all of us, will He not also with Him freely give us all things?
Lui qui n'a point épargné son propre Fils, mais qui l'a livré pour nous tous, comment ne nous donnera-t-il pas aussi toutes choses avec lui?
33 Who shall impeach those whom God has chosen? God declares them free from guilt.
Qui accusera les élus de Dieu? Dieu est celui qui les justifie.
34 Who is there to condemn them? Christ Jesus died, or rather has risen to life again. He is also at the right hand of God, and is interceding for us.
Qui condamnera? Jésus-Christ est celui qui est mort; bien plus, il est ressuscité, il est à la droite de Dieu, et il intercède pour nous!
35 Who shall separate us from Christ's love? Shall affliction or distress, persecution or hunger, nakedness or danger or the sword?
Qui nous séparera de l'amour du Christ? Sera-ce l'affliction, ou l'angoisse, ou la persécution, ou la faim, ou la nudité, ou le péril, ou l'épée?
36 As it stands written in the Scripture, "For Thy sake they are, all day long, trying to kill us. We have been looked upon as sheep destined for slaughter."
Il est écrit, en effet: «Nous sommes tout le jour livrés à la mort à cause de toi; on nous regarde comme des brebis destinées à la boucherie.»
37 Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who has loved us.
Mais voici que, dans toutes ces épreuves, nous sommes plus que vainqueurs par Celui qui nous a aimés.
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither the lower ranks of evil angels nor the higher, neither things present nor things future, nor the forces of nature,
Car je suis assuré que ni la mort, ni la vie, ni les anges, ni les dominations, ni les choses présentes, ni les choses à venir,
39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God which rests upon us in Christ Jesus our Lord.
ni les puissances, ni hauteur, ni profondeur, ni aucune autre créature ne pourra nous séparer de l'amour que Dieu nous a témoigné en Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur.
