< Matthew 11 >

1 When Jesus had concluded His instructions to His twelve disciples, He left in order to teach and to proclaim His Message in the neighbouring towns.
Et factum est, cum consummasset Iesus, præcipiens duodecim discipulis suis, transiit inde ut doceret, et prædicaret in civitatibus eorum.
2 Now John had heard in prison about the Christ's doings, and he sent some of his disciples to inquire:
Ioannes autem cum audisset in vinculis opera Christi, mittens duos de discipulis suis,
3 "Are you the Coming One, or is it a different person that we are to expect?"
ait illi: Tu es, qui venturus es, an alium expectamus?
4 "Go and report to John what you see and hear," replied Jesus;
Et respondens Iesus ait illis: Euntes renunciate Ioanni quæ audistis, et vidistis.
5 "blind eyes receive sight, and cripples walk; lepers are cleansed, and deaf ears hear; the dead are raised to life, and the poor have the Good News proclaimed to them;
Cæci vident, claudi ambulant, leprosi mundantur, surdi audiunt, mortui resurgunt, pauperes evangelizantur:
6 and blessed is every one who does not stumble and fall because of my claims."
et beatus est, qui non fuerit scandalizatus in me.
7 When the messengers had taken their leave, Jesus proceeded to say to the multitude concerning John, "What did you go out into the Desert to gaze at? A reed waving in the wind?
Illis autem abeuntibus, cœpit Iesus dicere ad turbas de Ioanne: Quid existis in desertum videre? arundinem vento agitatem?
8 But what did you go out to see? A man luxuriously dressed? Those who wear luxurious clothes are to be found in kings' palaces.
Sed quid existis videre? hominem mollibus vestitum? Ecce qui mollibus vestiuntur, in domibus regum sunt.
9 But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.
Sed quid existis videre? prophetam? Etiam dico vobis, et plus quam prophetam.
10 This is he of whom it is written, "'See I am sending My messenger before Thy face, and he will make Thy road ready before Thee.'
Hic est enim, de quo scriptum est: Ecce ego mitto Angelum meum ante faciem tuam, qui præparabit viam tuam ante te.
11 "I solemnly tell you that among all of woman born no greater has ever been raised up than John the Baptist; yet one who is of lower rank in the Kingdom of the Heavens is greater than he.
Amen dico vobis, non surrexit inter natos mulierum maior Ioanne Baptista: qui autem minor est in regno cælorum, maior est illo.
12 But from the time of John the Baptist till now, the Kingdom of the Heavens has been suffering violent assault, and the violent have been seizing it by force.
A diebus autem Ioannis Baptistæ usque nunc, regnum cælorum vim patitur, et violenti rapiunt illud.
13 For all the Prophets and the Law taught until John.
Omnes enim prophetæ, et lex usque ad Ioannem prophetaverunt:
14 And (if you are willing to receive it) he is the Elijah who was to come.
et si vultis recipere, ipse est Elias, qui venturus est.
15 Listen, every one who has ears!
Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.
16 "But to what shall I compare the present generation? It is like children sitting in the open places, who call to their playmates.
Cui autem similem æstimabo generationem istam? Similis est pueris sedentibus in foro: qui clamantes coæqualibus
17 "'We have played the flute to you,' they say, 'and you have not danced: we have sung dirges, and you have not beaten your breasts.'
dicunt: Cecinimus vobis, et non saltastis: lamentavimus, et non planxistis.
18 "For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.'
Venit enim Ioannes neque manducans, neque bibens, et dicunt: Dæmonium habet.
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they exclaim, 'See this man! --given to gluttony and tippling, and a friend of tax-gatherers and notorious sinners!' And yet Wisdom is vindicated by her actions."
Venit Filius hominis manducans, et bibens, et dicunt: Ecce homo vorax, et potator vini, publicanorum, et peccatorum amicus. Et iustificata est sapientia a filiis suis.
20 Then began He to upbraid the towns where most of His mighty works had been done--because they had not repented.
Tunc cœpit exprobrare civitatibus, in quibus factæ sunt plurimæ virtutes eius, quia non egissent pœnitentiam.
21 "Alas for thee, Chorazin!" He cried. "Alas for thee, Bethsaida! For had the mighty works been done in Tyre and Sidon which have been done in both of you, they would long ere now have repented, covered with sackcloth and ashes.
Væ tibi Corozain, væ tibi Bethsaida: quia, si in Tyro, et Sidone factæ essent virtutes quæ factæ sunt in vobis, olim in cilicio, et cinere pœnitentiam egissent.
22 Only I tell you that it will be more endurable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of Judgement than for you.
Verumtamen dico vobis: Tyro, et Sidoni remissius erit in die iudicii, quam vobis.
23 And thou, Capernaum, shalt thou be exalted even to Heaven? Even to Hades shalt thou descend. For had the mighty works been done in Sodom which have been done in thee, it would have remained until now. (Hadēs g86)
Et tu Capharnaum, numquid usque in cælum exaltaberis? usque in infernum descendes. Quia, si in Sodomis factæ fuissent virtutes, quæ factæ sunt in te, forte mansissent usque in hanc diem. (Hadēs g86)
24 Only I tell you all, that it will be more endurable for the land of Sodom on the day of Judgement than for thee."
Verumtamen dico vobis, quia terræ Sodomorum remissius erit in die iudicii, quam tibi.
25 About that time Jesus exclaimed, "I heartily praise Thee, Father, Lord of Heaven and of earth, that Thou hast hidden these things from sages and men of discernment, and hast unveiled them to babes.
In illo tempore respondens Iesus dixit: Confiteor tibi, Pater, Domine cæli et terræ, quia abscondisti hæc a sapientibus, et prudentibus, et revelasti ea parvulis.
26 Yes, Father, for such has been Thy gracious will.
Ita Pater: quoniam sic fuit placitum ante te.
27 "All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one fully knows the Son except the Father, nor does any one fully know the Father except the Son and all to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
Omnia mihi tradita sunt a Patre meo. Et nemo novit Filium, nisi Pater: neque Patrem quis novit, nisi Filius, et cui voluerit Filius revelare.
28 "Come to me, all you toiling and burdened ones, and I will give you rest.
Venite ad me omnes, qui laboratis, et onerati estis, et ego reficiam vos.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Tollite iugum meum super vos, et discite a me, quia mitis sum, et humilis corde: et invenietis requiem animabus vestris.
30 For it is good to bear my yoke, and my burden is light."
Iugum enim meum suave est, et onus meum leve.
