< Mark 15 >
1 At earliest dawn, after the High Priests had held a consultation with the Elders and Scribes, they and the entire Sanhedrin bound Jesus and took Him away and handed Him over to Pilate.
And, straightway, early, when they had made, a council, the High-priest, with the Elders, and Scribes, and all the High-council, binding Jesus, led him away, and delivered him up unto Pilate.
2 So Pilate questioned Him. "Are you the King of the Jews?" he asked. "I am," replied Jesus.
And Pilate questioned him—Art, thou, the king of the Jews? And, he, answering him, saith—Thou, sayest.
3 Then, as the High Priests went on heaping accusations on Him,
And the High-priests began to accuse him, of many things.
4 Pilate again and again asked Him, "Do you make no reply? Listen to the many charges they are bringing against you."
And, Pilate, again, was questioning him, [saying]—Answerest thou, nothing? See! of how many things, they are accusing thee!
5 But Jesus made no further answer: so that Pilate wondered.
But, Jesus, no further, answered, anything, so that Pilate began to marvel.
6 Now at the Festival it was customary for Pilate to release to the Jews any one prisoner whom they might beg off from punishment;
Now, at feast time, he was wont to release unto them one prisoner, whom they were claiming.
7 and at this time a man named Barabbas was in prison among the insurgents--persons who in the insurrection had committed murder.
And there was the so-called Barabbas, with the rebels, bound, even with them who, in the rebellion, had committed, murder.
8 So the people came crowding up, asking Pilate to grant them the usual favour.
And, going up, the multitude began to be claiming—according as he was wont to do for them.
9 "Shall I release for you the King of the Jews?" answered Pilate.
But, Pilate, answered them, saying—Will ye, I release unto you, the King of the Jews?
10 For he could see that it was out of sheer spite that the High Priests had handed Him over.
For he was getting to know that, for envy, had [the High-priests] delivered him up.
11 But the High Priests urged on the crowd to obtain Barabbas's release in preference;
But, the High-priests, stirred up the multitude, that, rather Barabbas, he should release unto them.
12 and when Pilate again asked them, "What then shall I do to the man you call King of the Jews?"
But, Pilate, again answering, was saying unto them—What then shall I do with him whom ye call, the King of the Jews?
13 they once more shouted out, "Crucify Him!"
And, they, again, cried out—Crucify him!
14 "Why, what crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they vehemently shouted, "Crucify Him!"
But, Pilate, was saying unto them—Why! what, evil, hath he done? And, they, vehemently, cried out—Crucify him!
15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the mob, released Barabbas for them, and after scourging Jesus handed Him over for crucifixion.
And Pilate, being minded to do what would satisfy, the multitude, released unto them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus, having scourged him, that he should be crucified.
16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the court of the Palace (the Praetorium), and calling together the whole battalion
And, the soldiers, led him away, inside the court, which is a judgment-hall, —and called together the whole band;
17 they arrayed Him in crimson, placed on His head a wreath of thorny twigs which they had twisted,
and they array him in purple, and set upon him, when they have plaited it; a crown of thorns, —
18 and went on to salute Him with shouts of "Long live the King of the Jews."
and began to be saluting him—Joy to thee! King of the Jews!
19 Then they began to beat Him on the head with a cane, to spit on Him, and to do Him homage on bended knees.
and were striking him on the head with a reed, and were spitting at him, —and, bowing their knees, were doing him homage.
20 At last, having finished their sport, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.
And, when they had mocked him, they put off him, the purple, and put on him, his own garments. And they lead him forth, that they may crucify him.
21 One Simon, a Cyrenaean, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing along, coming from the country: him they compelled to carry His cross.
And they impress a certain passer-by, Simon a Cyrenian, coming from a field, the father of Alexander and Rufus, —that he may carry his cross.
22 So they brought Him to the place called Golgotha, which, being translated, means 'Skull-ground.'
And they bring him unto the Golgotha place, which is, being translated, Skull-place.
23 Here they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He refused it.
And they would have given him, myrrhed wine, —who, however, received it not.
24 Then they crucified Him. This done, they divided His garments among them, drawing lots to decide what each should take.
And they crucify him, and part asunder his garments, casting a lot upon them—who should have anything.
25 It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified Him.
And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.
26 Over His head was the notice in writing of the charge against Him: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
And the inscription of his accusation, had been inscribed—THE KING OF THE JEWS.
27 And together with Jesus they crucified two robbers, one at His right hand and one at His left.
And, with him, they crucify, two robbers, one on his right hand, and one on his left.
29 And all the passers-by reviled Him. They shook their heads at Him and said, "Ah! you who were for destroying the Sanctuary and building a new one in three days,
And, the passers-by, were reviling him, shaking their heads, and saying—Aha! thou who wast pulling down the shrine, and building one in three days!
30 come down from the cross and save yourself."
Save thyself, —coming down from the cross.
31 In the same way the High Priests also, as well as the Scribes, kept on scoffing at Him, saying to one another, "He has saved others: himself he cannot save!
Likewise, the High-priests also, mocking one to another, with the Scribes, were saying—Others, he saved, himself, he cannot save!
32 This Christ, the King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Even the men who were being crucified with Him heaped insults on Him.
The Christ, the King of Israel—let him come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And, they who had been crucified with him, were casting it in his teeth.
33 At noon there came a darkness over the whole land, lasting till three o'clock in the afternoon.
And, when it was the sixth hour, darkness, came on all the land—until the ninth hour;
34 But at three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Elohi, Elohi, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?"
and, at the ninth hour, Jesus, uttered a cry, with a loud voice—Eloi! Eloi! lama sabachthanei? which is, being translated—My God! [My God!] to what end, didst thou forsake me?
35 Some of the bystanders, hearing Him, said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah!"
And, some of the by-standers, having heard, were saying—See! Elijah, he calleth!
36 Then a man ran to fill a sponge with sour wine, and he put it on the end of a cane and placed it to His lips, saying at the same time, "Wait! let us see whether Elijah will come and take him down."
And one, running, filled a sponge with vinegar, and, putting it about a reed, was giving him to drink, saying—Stay! let us see whether Elijah is coming, to take him down!
37 But Jesus uttered a loud cry and yielded up His spirit.
But, Jesus, sending out a loud voice, ceased to breathe.
38 And the curtain in the Sanctuary was torn in two, from top to bottom.
And, the veil of the Temple, was rent into two, from top to bottom.
39 And when the Centurion who stood in front of the cross saw that He was dead, he exclaimed, "This man was indeed God's Son."
Now the centurion, who was standing near, out over against him, seeing, that, thus, he ceased to breathe, said—Truly, this man, was God’s son!
40 There were also a party of women looking on from a distance; among them being both Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of James the Little and of Joses, and Salome--
And there were, women also, from afar, looking on, —among whom were both Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Little and Joses, and Salome;
41 all of whom in the Galilaean days had habitually been with Him and cared for Him, as well as many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him.
who, when he was in Galilee, used to follow him, and minister unto him, —and many other women, who had come up with him unto Jerusalem.
42 Towards sunset, as it was the Preparation--that is, the day preceding the Sabbath--
And evening, already, having begun, since it was a preparation, that is, the eve of a Sabbath,
43 Joseph of Arimathaea came, a highly respected member of the Council, who himself also was living in expectation of the Kingdom of God. He summoned up courage to go in to see Pilate and beg for the body of Jesus.
Joseph of Arimathaea, a noble counsellor, who, also himself, was awaiting the kingdom of God, came; and, venturing, went in unto Pilate, and claimed the body of Jesus.
44 But Pilate could hardly believe that He was already dead. He called, however, for the Centurion and inquired whether He had been long dead;
But, Pilate, wondered whether, already, he was dead; and, calling near the centurion, questioned him—whether he had, already, died.
45 and having ascertained the fact he granted the body to Joseph.
And, getting to know from the centurion, he presented the corpse unto Joseph.
46 He, having bought a sheet of linen, took Him down, wrapped Him in the sheet and laid Him in a tomb hewn in the rock; after which he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
And, buying a fine Indian cloth, he took him down, and wrapped him about with the cloth, and laid him in a tomb, which had been hewn out of a rock, —and rolled near a stone upon the door of the tomb.
47 Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was put.
Now, Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of Joses, were viewing how he had been laid.
