John 8
1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
イエスはオリブ山に行かれた。
2 At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself;
朝早くまた宮にはいられると、人々が皆みもとに集まってきたので、イエスはすわって彼らを教えておられた。
3 and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him.
すると、律法学者たちやパリサイ人たちが、姦淫をしている時につかまえられた女をひっぱってきて、中に立たせた上、イエスに言った、
4 "Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery.
「先生、この女は姦淫の場でつかまえられました。
5 Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?"
モーセは律法の中で、こういう女を石で打ち殺せと命じましたが、あなたはどう思いますか」。
6 They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground.
彼らがそう言ったのは、イエスをためして、訴える口実を得るためであった。しかし、イエスは身をかがめて、指で地面に何か書いておられた。
7 When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her."
彼らが問い続けるので、イエスは身を起して彼らに言われた、「あなたがたの中で罪のない者が、まずこの女に石を投げつけるがよい」。
8 Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground.
そしてまた身をかがめて、地面に物を書きつづけられた。
9 They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone--and the woman in the centre of the court.
これを聞くと、彼らは年寄から始めて、ひとりびとり出て行き、ついに、イエスだけになり、女は中にいたまま残された。
10 Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
そこでイエスは身を起して女に言われた、「女よ、みんなはどこにいるか。あなたを罰する者はなかったのか」。
11 "No one, Sir," she replied. "And I do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."]
女は言った、「主よ、だれもございません」。イエスは言われた、「わたしもあなたを罰しない。お帰りなさい。今後はもう罪を犯さないように」。〕
12 Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life."
イエスは、また人々に語ってこう言われた、「わたしは世の光である。わたしに従って来る者は、やみのうちを歩くことがなく、命の光をもつであろう」。
13 "You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true."
するとパリサイ人たちがイエスに言った、「あなたは、自分のことをあかししている。あなたのあかしは真実ではない」。
14 "Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things.
イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「たとい、わたしが自分のことをあかししても、わたしのあかしは真実である。それは、わたしがどこからきたのか、また、どこへ行くのかを知っているからである。しかし、あなたがたは、わたしがどこからきて、どこへ行くのかを知らない。
15 You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one.
あなたがたは肉によって人をさばくが、わたしはだれもさばかない。
16 And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me.
しかし、もしわたしがさばくとすれば、わたしのさばきは正しい。なぜなら、わたしはひとりではなく、わたしをつかわされたかたが、わたしと一緒だからである。
17 In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true.
あなたがたの律法には、ふたりによる証言は真実だと、書いてある。
18 I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me."
わたし自身のことをあかしするのは、わたしであるし、わたしをつかわされた父も、わたしのことをあかしして下さるのである」。
19 "Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also."
すると、彼らはイエスに言った、「あなたの父はどこにいるのか」。イエスは答えられた、「あなたがたは、わたしをもわたしの父をも知っていない。もし、あなたがたがわたしを知っていたなら、わたしの父をも知っていたであろう」。
20 These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come.
イエスが宮の内で教えていた時、これらの言葉をさいせん箱のそばで語られたのであるが、イエスの時がまだきていなかったので、だれも捕える者がなかった。
21 Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come."
さて、また彼らに言われた、「わたしは去って行く。あなたがたはわたしを捜し求めるであろう。そして自分の罪のうちに死ぬであろう。わたしの行く所には、あなたがたは来ることができない」。
22 The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, 'Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?"
そこでユダヤ人たちは言った、「わたしの行く所に、あなたがたは来ることができないと、言ったのは、あるいは自殺でもしようとするつもりか」。
23 "You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world.
イエスは彼らに言われた、「あなたがたは下から出た者だが、わたしは上からきた者である。あなたがたはこの世の者であるが、わたしはこの世の者ではない。
24 That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen."
だからわたしは、あなたがたは自分の罪のうちに死ぬであろうと、言ったのである。もしわたしがそういう者であることをあなたがたが信じなければ、罪のうちに死ぬことになるからである」。
25 "You--who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus.
そこで彼らはイエスに言った、「あなたは、いったい、どういうかたですか」。イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしがどういう者であるかは、初めからあなたがたに言っているではないか。
26 "Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak."
あなたがたについて、わたしの言うべきこと、さばくべきことが、たくさんある。しかし、わたしをつかわされたかたは真実なかたである。わたしは、そのかたから聞いたままを世にむかって語るのである」。
27 They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father.
彼らは、イエスが父について話しておられたことを悟らなかった。
28 So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak.
そこでイエスは言われた、「あなたがたが人の子を上げてしまった後はじめて、わたしがそういう者であること、また、わたしは自分からは何もせず、ただ父が教えて下さったままを話していたことが、わかってくるであろう。
29 And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him."
わたしをつかわされたかたは、わたしと一緒におられる。わたしは、いつも神のみこころにかなうことをしているから、わたしをひとり置きざりになさることはない」。
30 As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him.
これらのことを語られたところ、多くの人々がイエスを信じた。
31 Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples;
イエスは自分を信じたユダヤ人たちに言われた、「もしわたしの言葉のうちにとどまっておるなら、あなたがたは、ほんとうにわたしの弟子なのである。
32 and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free."
また真理を知るであろう。そして真理は、あなたがたに自由を得させるであろう」。
33 "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, 'You shall become free'?"
そこで、彼らはイエスに言った、「わたしたちはアブラハムの子孫であって、人の奴隷になったことなどは、一度もない。どうして、あなたがたに自由を得させるであろうと、言われるのか」。
34 "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin.
イエスは彼らに答えられた、「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。すべて罪を犯す者は罪の奴隷である。
そして、奴隷はいつまでも家にいる者ではない。しかし、子はいつまでもいる。 (aiōn g165)
36 If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed.
だから、もし子があなたがたに自由を得させるならば、あなたがたは、ほんとうに自由な者となるのである。
37 You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you.
わたしは、あなたがたがアブラハムの子孫であることを知っている。それだのに、あなたがたはわたしを殺そうとしている。わたしの言葉が、あなたがたのうちに根をおろしていないからである。
38 The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father."
わたしはわたしの父のもとで見たことを語っているが、あなたがたは自分の父から聞いたことを行っている」。
39 "Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing.
彼らはイエスに答えて言った、「わたしたちの父はアブラハムである」。イエスは彼らに言われた、「もしアブラハムの子であるなら、アブラハムのわざをするがよい。
40 But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that.
ところが今、神から聞いた真理をあなたがたに語ってきたこのわたしを、殺そうとしている。そんなことをアブラハムはしなかった。
41 You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God."
あなたがたは、あなたがたの父のわざを行っているのである」。彼らは言った、「わたしたちは、不品行の結果うまれた者ではない。わたしたちにはひとりの父がある。それは神である」。
42 "If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but He sent me.
イエスは彼らに言われた、「神があなたがたの父であるならば、あなたがたはわたしを愛するはずである。わたしは神から出た者、また神からきている者であるからだ。わたしは自分からきたのではなく、神からつかわされたのである。
43 How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words.
どうしてあなたがたは、わたしの話すことがわからないのか。あなたがたが、わたしの言葉を悟ることができないからである。
44 The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth--for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.
あなたがたは自分の父、すなわち、悪魔から出てきた者であって、その父の欲望どおりを行おうと思っている。彼は初めから、人殺しであって、真理に立つ者ではない。彼のうちには真理がないからである。彼が偽りを言うとき、いつも自分の本音をはいているのである。彼は偽り者であり、偽りの父であるからだ。
45 But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
しかし、わたしが真理を語っているので、あなたがたはわたしを信じようとしない。
46 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?
あなたがたのうち、だれがわたしに罪があると責めうるのか。わたしは真理を語っているのに、なぜあなたがたは、わたしを信じないのか。
47 He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children."
神からきた者は神の言葉に聞き従うが、あなたがたが聞き従わないのは、神からきた者でないからである」。
48 "Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?"
ユダヤ人たちはイエスに答えて言った、「あなたはサマリヤ人で、悪霊に取りつかれていると、わたしたちが言うのは、当然ではないか」。
49 "I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me.
イエスは答えられた、「わたしは、悪霊に取りつかれているのではなくて、わたしの父を重んじているのだが、あなたがたはわたしを軽んじている。
50 I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me--and who judges.
わたしは自分の栄光を求めてはいない。それを求めるかたが別にある。そのかたは、またさばくかたである。
51 In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death." (aiōn g165)
よくよく言っておく。もし人がわたしの言葉を守るならば、その人はいつまでも死を見ることがないであろう」。 (aiōn g165)
52 "Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet you say, 'If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.' (aiōn g165)
ユダヤ人たちが言った、「あなたが悪霊に取りつかれていることが、今わかった。アブラハムは死に、預言者たちも死んでいる。それだのに、あなたは、わたしの言葉を守る者はいつまでも死を味わうことがないであろうと、言われる。 (aiōn g165)
53 Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
あなたは、わたしたちの父アブラハムより偉いのだろうか。彼も死に、預言者たちも死んだではないか。あなたは、いったい、自分をだれと思っているのか」。
54 "Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me--namely my Father, who you say is your God.
イエスは答えられた、「わたしがもし自分に栄光を帰するなら、わたしの栄光は、むなしいものである。わたしに栄光を与えるかたは、わたしの父であって、あなたがたが自分の神だと言っているのは、そのかたのことである。
55 You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands.
あなたがたはその神を知っていないが、わたしは知っている。もしわたしが神を知らないと言うならば、あなたがたと同じような偽り者であろう。しかし、わたしはそのかたを知り、その御言を守っている。
56 Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad."
あなたがたの父アブラハムは、わたしのこの日を見ようとして楽しんでいた。そしてそれを見て喜んだ」。
57 "You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?"
そこでユダヤ人たちはイエスに言った、「あなたはまだ五十にもならないのに、アブラハムを見たのか」。
58 "In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am."
イエスは彼らに言われた、「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。アブラハムの生れる前からわたしは、いるのである」。
59 Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple.
そこで彼らは石をとって、イエスに投げつけようとした。しかし、イエスは身を隠して、宮から出て行かれた。
