John 6
1 After this Jesus went away across the Lake of Galilee (that is, the Lake of Tiberias).
Jésus s’en alla ensuite de l’autre côté de la mer de Galilée ou de Tibériade.
2 A vast multitude followed Him, because they witnessed the miracles on the sick which He was constantly performing.
Et une foule nombreuse le suivait, parce qu’elle voyait les miracles qu’il opérait sur ceux qui étaient malades.
3 Then Jesus went up the hill, and sat there with His disciples.
Jésus monta sur la montagne, et là il s’assit avec ses disciples.
4 The Jewish Festival, the Passover, was at hand.
Or la Pâque, la fête des Juifs, était proche.
5 And when He looked round and saw an immense crowd coming towards Him, He said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for all these people to eat?"
Jésus donc ayant levé les yeux, et voyant qu’une grande foule venait à lui, dit à Philippe: « Où achèterons-nous du pain pour que ces gens aient à manger? »
6 He said this to put Philip to the test, for He Himself knew what He was going to do.
Il disait cela pour l’éprouver, car lui, il savait ce qu’il devait faire.
7 "Seven pounds' worth of bread," replied Philip, "is not enough for them all to get even a scanty meal."
Philippe lui répondit: « Deux cents deniers de pain ne suffiraient pas pour que chacun en reçoive un morceau. »
8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him,
Un de ses disciples, André, frère de Simon-Pierre, lui dit:
9 "There is a boy here with five barley loaves and a couple of fish: but what is that among so many?"
« Il y a ici un jeune homme qui a cinq pains d’orge et deux poissons; mais qu’est-ce que cela pour tant de monde? »
10 "Make the people sit down," said Jesus. The ground was covered with thick grass; so they sat down, the adult men numbering about 5,000.
Jésus dit: « Faites les asseoir. » Il y avait beaucoup d’herbe en ce lieu. Ils s’assirent donc, au nombre d’environ cinq mille.
11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were resting on the ground; and also the fish in like manner--as much as they desired.
Jésus prit les pains, et ayant rendu grâces, il les distribua à ceux qui étaient assis; il leur donna de même des deux poissons, autant qu’ils en voulurent.
12 When all were fully satisfied, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the broken portions that remain over, so that nothing be lost."
Lorsqu’ils furent rassasiés, il dit à ses disciples: « Recueillez les morceaux qui restent, afin que rien ne se perde. »
13 Accordingly they gathered them up; and with the fragments of the five barley loaves--the broken portions that remained over after they had done eating--they filled twelve baskets.
Ils les recueillirent, et remplirent douze corbeilles des morceaux qui étaient restés des cinq pains d’orge, après qu’ils eurent mangé.
14 Thereupon the people, having seen the miracle He had performed, said, "This is indeed the Prophet who was to come into the world."
Ces hommes ayant vu le miracle que Jésus avait fait, disaient: « Celui-ci est vraiment le Prophète qui doit venir dans le monde. »
15 Perceiving, however, that they were about to come and carry Him off by force to make Him a king, Jesus withdrew again up the hill alone by Himself.
Sachant donc qu’ils allaient venir l’enlever pour le faire roi, Jésus se retira de nouveau, seul, sur la montagne.
16 When evening came on, His disciples went down to the Lake.
Le soir venu, les disciples descendirent au bord de la mer;
17 There they got on board a boat, and pushed off to cross the Lake to Capernaum. By this time it had become dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.
et étant montés dans une barque, ils traversaient la mer dans la direction de Capharnaüm. Il faisait déjà nuit, et Jésus ne les avait pas encore rejoints.
18 The Lake also was getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing.
Cependant la mer, soulevée par un grand vent, était agitée.
19 When, however, they had rowed three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the water and coming near the boat.
Quand ils eurent ramé environ vingt-cinq à trente stades, ils virent Jésus marchant sur la mer et s’approchant de la barque; et ils eurent peur.
20 They were terrified; but He called to them. "It is I," He said, "do not be afraid."
Mais il leur dit: « C’est moi, ne craignez point. »
21 Then they were willing to take Him on board; and in a moment the boat reached the shore at the point to which they were going.
Ils voulurent donc le prendre dans la barque, et aussitôt, la barque se trouva au lieu où ils allaient.
22 Next morning the crowd who were still standing about on the other side of the Lake found that there had been but one small boat there, and they had seen that Jesus did not go on board with His disciples, but that His disciples went away without Him.
Le jour suivant, la foule qui était restée de l’autre côté de la mer, avait remarqué qu’il n’y avait là qu’une seule barque, et que Jésus n’y était point entré avec ses disciples, mais que ceux-ci étaient partis seuls.
23 Yet a number of small boats came from Tiberias to the neighbourhood of the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
— D’autres barques, cependant, étaient arrivées de Tibériade près du lieu où le Seigneur, après avoir rendu grâces, leur avait donné à manger. —
24 When however the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they themselves also took boats and came to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
La foule donc, ayant vu que Jésus n’était pas là, ni ses disciples non plus, entra dans ces barques et se rendit à Capharnaüm pour chercher Jésus.
25 So when they had crossed the Lake and had found Him, they asked Him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?"
Et l’ayant trouvé de l’autre côté de la mer ils lui dirent: « Maître, quand êtes-vous venu ici? »
26 "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that you are searching for me not because you have seen miracles, but because you ate the loaves and had a hearty meal.
Jésus leur repartit et leur dit: « En vérité, en vérité je vous le dis, vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu des miracles, mais parce que vous avez mangé des pains et que vous avez été rassasiés.
27 Bestow your pains not on the food which perishes, but on the food that remains unto the Life of the Ages--that food which will be the Son of Man's gift to you; for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal." (aiōnios g166)
Travaillez, non pour la nourriture qui périt, mais pour celle qui demeure pour la vie éternelle, et que le Fils de l’homme vous donnera. Car c’est lui que le Père, Dieu, a marqué d’un sceau. » (aiōnios g166)
28 "What are we to do," they asked, "in order to carry out the things that God requires?"
Ils lui dirent: « Que devons-nous faire, pour faire les œuvres de Dieu? »
29 "This," replied Jesus, "is above all the thing that God requires--that you should be believers in Him whom He has sent."
Jésus leur répondit: « Voici l’œuvre que Dieu demande, c’est que vous croyiez en celui qu’il a envoyé. »
30 "What miracle then," they asked, "do you perform for us to see and become believers in you? What do you do?
Ils lui dirent: « Quel miracle faites-vous donc afin que nous le voyions et que nous croyions en vous? Quelles sont vos œuvres?
31 Our forefathers ate the manna in the Desert, as it is written, 'He gave them bread out of Heaven to eat'."
Nos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, ainsi qu’il est écrit: Il leur a donné à manger le pain du ciel. »
32 "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that Moses did not give you the bread out of Heaven, but my Father is giving you the bread--the true bread--out of Heaven.
Jésus leur répondit: « En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, Moïse ne vous a pas donné le pain du ciel; c’est mon Père qui donne le vrai pain du ciel.
33 For God's bread is that which comes down out of Heaven and gives Life to the world."
Car le pain de Dieu, c’est le pain qui descend du ciel et qui donne la vie au monde. »
34 "Sir," they said, "always give us that bread."
Ils lui dirent donc: « Seigneur, donnez-nous toujours de ce pain. »
35 "I am the bread of Life," replied Jesus; "he who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never, never thirst.
Jésus leur répondit: « Je suis le pain de vie: celui qui vient à moi n’aura jamais faim, et celui qui croit en moi n’aura jamais soif.
36 But it is as I have said to you: you have seen me and yet you do not believe.
Mais, je vous l’ai dit, vous m’avez vu, et vous ne croyez point.
37 Every one whom the Father gives me will come to me, and him who comes to me I will never on any account drive away.
Tout ce que le Père me donne viendra à moi, et celui qui vient à moi, je ne le jetterai point dehors;
38 For I have left Heaven and have come down to earth not to seek my own pleasure, but to do the will of Him who sent me.
car je suis descendu du ciel pour faire, non ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé.
39 And this is the will of Him who sent me, that of all that He has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it to life on the last day.
Or la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé, est que je ne perde aucun de ceux qu’il m’a donnés, mais que je les ressuscite au dernier jour.
40 For this is my Father's will, that every one who fixes his gaze on the Son of God and believes in Him should have the Life of the Ages, and I will raise him to life on the last day." (aiōnios g166)
Car c’est la volonté de mon Père [qui m’a envoyé], que quiconque voit le Fils et croit en lui, ait la vie éternelle; et moi je le ressusciterai au dernier jour. » (aiōnios g166)
41 Now the Jews began to find fault about Him because of His claiming to be the bread which came down out of Heaven.
Les Juifs murmuraient à son sujet, parce qu’il avait dit: « Je suis le pain vivant, qui est descendu du ciel. »
42 They kept asking, "Is not this man Joseph's son? Is he not Jesus, whose father and mother we know? What does he mean by now saying, 'I have come down out of Heaven'?"
Et ils disaient: « N’est-ce pas là Jésus, le fils de Joseph, dont nous connaissons le père et la mère? Comment donc dit-il: Je suis descendu du ciel? »
43 "Do not thus find fault among yourselves," replied Jesus;
Jésus leur répondit: « Ne murmurez point entre vous.
44 "no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; then I will raise him to life on the last day.
Nul ne peut venir à moi, si le Père qui m’a envoyé ne l’attire; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
45 It stands written in the Prophets, 'And they shall all of them be taught by God'. Every one who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to me.
Il est écrit dans les Prophètes: Ils seront tous enseignés par Dieu. Quiconque a entendu le Père et a reçu son enseignement, vient à moi.
46 No one has ever seen the Father--except Him who is from God. He has seen the Father.
Ce n’est pas que personne ait vu le Père, sinon celui qui est de Dieu; celui-là a vu le Père.
En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui croit en moi a la vie éternelle. (aiōnios g166)
48 I am the bread of Life.
Je suis le pain de vie.
49 Your forefathers ate the manna in the Desert, and they died.
Vos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, et ils sont morts.
50 Here is the bread that comes down out of Heaven that a man may eat it and not die.
Voici le pain descendu du ciel, afin qu’on en mange et qu’on ne meure point.
51 I am the living bread come down out of Heaven. If a man eats this bread, he shall live for ever. Moreover the bread which I will give is my flesh given for the life of the world." (aiōn g165)
Je suis le pain vivant qui est descendu du ciel. Si quelqu’un mange de ce pain, il vivra éternellement; et le pain que je donnerai, c’est ma chair, pour le salut du monde. » (aiōn g165)
52 This led to an angry debate among the Jews. "How can this man," they argued, "give us his flesh to eat?"
Là-dessus, les Juifs disputaient entre eux, disant: « Comment cet homme peut-il donner sa chair à manger? »
53 "In most solemn truth I tell you," said Jesus, "that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no Life in you.
Jésus leur dit: « En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si vous ne mangez la chair du Fils de l’homme, et ne buvez son sang, vous n’avez point la vie en vous-mêmes.
54 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has the Life of the Ages, and I will raise him up on the last day. (aiōnios g166)
Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang a la vie éternelle, et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour. (aiōnios g166)
55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
Car ma chair est vraiment une nourriture, et mon sang est vraiment un breuvage.
56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in union with me, and I remain in union with him.
Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang, demeure en moi, et moi en lui.
57 As the ever-living Father has sent me, and I live because of the Father, so also he who eats me will live because of me.
Comme le Père qui est vivant m’a envoyé, et que je vis par le Père, ainsi celui qui me mange vivra aussi par moi.
58 This is the bread which came down out of Heaven; it is unlike that which your forefathers ate--for they ate and yet died. He who eats this bread shall live for ever." (aiōn g165)
C’est là le pain qui est descendu du ciel: il n’en est point comme de vos pères qui ont mangé la manne et sont morts; celui qui mange de ce pain vivra éternellement. » (aiōn g165)
59 Jesus said all this in the synagogue while teaching at Capernaum.
Jésus dit ces choses, enseignant dans la synagogue à Capharnaüm.
60 Many therefore of His disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is hard to accept. Who can listen to such teaching?"
Beaucoup de ses disciples, l’ayant entendu, dirent: « Cette parole est dure, et qui peut l’écouter? »
61 But, knowing in Himself that His disciples were dissatisfied about it, Jesus asked them,
Jésus, sachant en lui-même que ses disciples murmuraient à ce sujet, leur dit: « Cela vous scandalise?
62 "Does this seem incredible to you? What then if you were to see the Son of Man ascending again where He was before?
Et quand vous verrez le Fils de l’homme monter où il était auparavant?…
63 It is the spirit which gives Life. The flesh confers no benefit whatever. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and are Life.
C’est l’esprit qui vivifie; la chair ne sert de rien. Les paroles que je vous ai dites sont esprit et vie.
64 But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him.
Mais il y en a parmi vous quelques-uns qui ne croient point. « Car Jésus savait, dès le commencement, qui étaient ceux qui ne croyaient point, et qui était celui qui le trahirait.
65 So He added, "That is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it be granted him by the Father."
Et il ajouta: « C’est pourquoi je vous ai dit que nul ne peut venir à moi, si cela ne lui a été donné par mon Père. »
66 Thereupon many of His disciples left Him and went away, and no longer associated with Him.
Dès ce moment, beaucoup de ses disciples se retirèrent, et ils n’allaient plus avec lui.
67 Jesus therefore appealed to the Twelve. "Will you go also?" He asked.
Jésus donc dit aux Douze: « Et vous, ne voulez-vous pas aussi vous en aller? »
68 "Master," replied Simon Peter, "to whom shall we go? Your teachings tell us of the Life of the Ages. (aiōnios g166)
Simon-Pierre lui répondit: « Seigneur, à qui irions-nous? Vous avez les paroles de la vie éternelle. (aiōnios g166)
69 And we have come to believe and know that you are indeed the Holy One of God."
Et nous, nous avons cru et nous avons connu que vous êtes le Saint de Dieu. »
70 "Did not I choose you--the Twelve?" said Jesus, "and even of you one is a devil."
Jésus leur répondit: « N’est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous les Douze? Et l’un de vous est un démon. »
71 He alluded to Judas, the son of Simon the Iscariot. For he it was who, though one of the Twelve, was afterwards to betray Him.
Il parlait de Judas, fils de Simon Iscariote, car c’était lui qui devait le trahir, lui, l’un des Douze.
