Acts 9
1 Now Saul, whose every breath was a threat of destruction for the disciples of the Lord,
Ὁ δὲ Σαῦλος ἔτι ἐμπνέων ἀπειλῆς καὶ φόνου εἰς τοὺς μαθητὰς τοῦ κυρίου, προσελθὼν τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ,
2 went to the High Priest and begged from him letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, in order that if he found any believers there, either men or women, he might bring them in chains to Jerusalem.
ᾐτήσατο παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ ἐπιστολὰς εἰς Δαμασκὸν πρὸς τὰς συναγωγάς, ὅπως ἐάν τινας εὕρῃ τῆς ὁδοῦ ὄντας ἄνδρας τε καὶ γυναῖκας, δεδεμένους ἀγάγῃ εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ.
3 But on the journey, as he was getting near Damascus, suddenly there flashed round him a light from Heaven;
ἐν δὲ τῷ πορεύεσθαι ἐγένετο αὐτὸν ἐγγίζειν τῇ Δαμασκῷ, ἐξαίφνης (τε *N(k)O*) αὐτὸν περιήστραψεν φῶς (ἐκ *N(k)O*) τοῦ οὐρανοῦ·
4 and falling to the ground he heard a voice which said to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"
καὶ πεσὼν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἤκουσεν φωνὴν λέγουσαν αὐτῷ· Σαοὺλ Σαούλ, τί με διώκεις;
5 "Who art thou, Lord?" he asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," was the reply.
εἶπεν δέ· τίς εἶ, κύριε; ὁ δέ (κύριος εἶπεν· *k*) ἐγώ εἰμι Ἰησοῦς ὃν σὺ διώκεις (σκληρόν σοι πρὸς κέντρα λακτίζειν· *K*)
6 "But rise and go to the city, and you will be told what you are to do.
(τρέμων τε καὶ θαμβῶν εἶπεν κύριε τί μέ θέλεις ποιῆσαι καὶ ὅ κύριος πρός αὐτόν *K*) (ἀλλ᾽ *NO*) ἀνάστηθι καὶ εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ λαληθήσεταί σοι (ὅ *N(o)*) (τί *NK(o)*) σε δεῖ ποιεῖν.
7 Meanwhile the men who travelled with Saul were standing dumb with amazement, hearing a sound, but seeing no one.
οἱ δὲ ἄνδρες οἱ συνοδεύοντες αὐτῷ εἱστήκεισαν ἐνεοί, ἀκούοντες μὲν τῆς φωνῆς, μηδένα δὲ θεωροῦντες.
8 Then he rose from the ground, but when he had opened his eyes, he could not see, and they led him by the arm and brought him to Damascus.
ἠγέρθη δὲ (ὁ *k*) Σαῦλος ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς, ἀνεῳγμένων (δὲ *NK(o)*) τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ (οὐδὲν *N(k)O*) ἔβλεπεν· χειραγωγοῦντες δὲ αὐτὸν εἰσήγαγον εἰς Δαμασκόν.
9 And for two days he remained without sight, and did not eat or drink anything.
καὶ ἦν ἡμέρας τρεῖς μὴ βλέπων καὶ οὐκ ἔφαγεν οὐδὲ ἔπιεν.
10 Now in Damascus there was a disciple of the name of Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, saying, "Ananias!" "I am here, Lord," he answered.
Ἦν δέ τις μαθητὴς ἐν Δαμασκῷ ὀνόματι Ἁνανίας, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐν ὁράματι ὁ κύριος· Ἁνανία. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· ἰδοὺ ἐγώ, κύριε.
11 "Rise," said the Lord, "and go to Straight Street, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man called Saul, from Tarsus, for he is actually praying.
ὁ δὲ κύριος πρὸς αὐτόν· (ἀναστὰς *NK(o)*) πορεύθητι ἐπὶ τὴν ῥύμην τὴν καλουμένην εὐθεῖαν καὶ ζήτησον ἐν οἰκίᾳ Ἰούδα Σαῦλον ὀνόματι Ταρσέα· ἰδοὺ γὰρ προσεύχεται
12 He has seen a man called Ananias come and lay his hands upon him so that he may recover his sight."
καὶ εἶδεν ἄνδρα ἐν ὁράματι Ἁνανίαν ὀνόματι εἰσελθόντα καὶ ἐπιθέντα αὐτῷ (τὰς *no*) (χεῖρας, *N(K)O*) ὅπως ἀναβλέψῃ.
13 "Lord," answered Ananias, "I have heard about that man from many, and I have heard of the great mischief he has done to Thy people in Jerusalem;
Ἀπεκρίθη δὲ (ὁ *k*) Ἁνανίας· κύριε, (ἤκουσα *N(k)O*) ἀπὸ πολλῶν περὶ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς τούτου, ὅσα κακὰ τοῖς ἁγίοις σου ἐποίησεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ·
14 and here he is authorized by the High Priests to arrest all who call upon Thy name."
καὶ ὧδε ἔχει ἐξουσίαν παρὰ τῶν ἀρχιερέων δῆσαι πάντας τοὺς ἐπικαλουμένους τὸ ὄνομά σου.
15 "Go," replied the Lord; "he is a chosen instrument of Mine to carry My name to the Gentiles and to kings and to the descendants of Israel.
Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ κύριος· πορεύου, ὅτι σκεῦος ἐκλογῆς ἐστίν μοι οὗτος τοῦ βαστάσαι τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐνώπιον (τῶν *o*) ἐθνῶν (τε *no*) καὶ βασιλέων υἱῶν τε Ἰσραήλ.
16 For I will let him know the great sufferings which he must pass through for My sake."
ἐγὼ γὰρ ὑποδείξω αὐτῷ ὅσα δεῖ αὐτὸν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ὀνόματός μου παθεῖν.
17 So Ananias went and entered the house; and, laying his two hands upon Saul, said, "Saul, brother, the Lord--even Jesus who appeared to you on your journey--has sent me, that you may recover your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."
Ἀπῆλθεν δὲ Ἁνανίας καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν, καὶ ἐπιθεὶς ἐπ᾽ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας εἶπεν· Σαοὺλ ἀδελφέ, ὁ κύριος ἀπέσταλκέν με, Ἰησοῦς ὁ ὀφθείς σοι ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ᾗ ἤρχου, ὅπως ἀναβλέψῃς καὶ πλησθῇς πνεύματος ἁγίου.
18 Instantly there dropped from his eyes what seemed to be scales, and he could see once more. Upon this he rose and received baptism;
καὶ εὐθέως ἀπέπεσαν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν (ὡς *N(k)O*) λεπίδες, ἀνέβλεψέν τε (παραχρῆμα *K*) καὶ ἀναστὰς ἐβαπτίσθη,
19 after which he took food and regained his strength. Then he remained some little time with the disciples in Damascus.
καὶ λαβὼν τροφὴν (ἐνίσχυσεν. *NK(o)*) Ἐγένετο δὲ (ὁ Σαῦλος *k*) μετὰ τῶν ἐν Δαμασκῷ μαθητῶν ἡμέρας τινάς·
20 And in the synagogues he began at once to proclaim Jesus as the Son of God;
καὶ εὐθέως ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς ἐκήρυσσεν τὸν (Ἰησοῦν, *N(K)O*) ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ.
21 and his hearers were all amazed, and began to ask one another, "Is not this the man who in Jerusalem tried to exterminate those who called upon that Name, and came here on purpose to carry them off in chains to the High Priests?"
ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες οἱ ἀκούοντες καὶ ἔλεγον· οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ πορθήσας (εἰς *N(k)O*) Ἰερουσαλὴμ τοὺς ἐπικαλουμένους τὸ ὄνομα τοῦτο; καὶ ὧδε εἰς τοῦτο ἐληλύθει ἵνα δεδεμένους αὐτοὺς ἀγάγῃ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς.
22 Saul, however, gained more and more influence, and as for the Jews living in Damascus, he bewildered them with his proofs that Jesus is the Christ.
Σαῦλος δὲ μᾶλλον ἐνεδυναμοῦτο καὶ συνέχυννεν τοὺς Ἰουδαίους τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν Δαμασκῷ, συμβιβάζων ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστός.
23 At length the Jews plotted to kill Saul;
ὡς δὲ ἐπληροῦντο ἡμέραι ἱκαναί, συνεβουλεύσαντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν·
24 but information of their intention was given to him. They even watched the gates, day and night, in order to murder him;
ἐγνώσθη δὲ τῷ Σαύλῳ ἡ ἐπιβουλὴ αὐτῶν. (παρετηροῦντο δὲ *N(k)O*) (καὶ *no*) τὰς πύλας ἡμέρας τε καὶ νυκτός, ὅπως αὐτὸν ἀνέλωσιν·
25 but his disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall, lowering him in a hamper.
λαβόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ (αὐτοῦ *NO*) νυκτὸς διὰ τοῦ τείχους καθῆκαν αὐτὸν χαλάσαντες ἐν σπυρίδι.
26 So he came to Jerusalem and made several attempts to associate with the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, being in doubt as to whether he himself was a disciple.
Παραγενόμενος δὲ (ὁ Σαῦλος *k*) (εἰς *NK(o)*) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (ἐπείραζεν *N(k)O*) κολλᾶσθαι τοῖς μαθηταῖς· καὶ πάντες ἐφοβοῦντο αὐτὸν μὴ πιστεύοντες ὅτι ἐστὶν μαθητής.
27 Barnabas, however, came to his assistance. He brought Saul to the Apostles, and related to them how, on his journey, he had seen the Lord, and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had fearlessly taught in the name of Jesus.
Βαρναβᾶς δὲ ἐπιλαβόμενος αὐτὸν ἤγαγεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀποστόλους καὶ διηγήσατο αὐτοῖς πῶς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶδεν τὸν κύριον καὶ ὅτι ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ καὶ πῶς ἐν Δαμασκῷ ἐπαρρησιάσατο ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
28 Henceforth Saul was one of them, going in and out of the city,
καὶ ἦν μετ᾽ αὐτῶν εἰσπορευόμενος καὶ ἐκπορευόμενος (εἰς *N(k)O*) Ἰερουσαλήμ,
29 and speaking fearlessly in the name of the Lord. And he often talked with the Hellenists and had discussions with them.
(καὶ *k*) παρρησιαζόμενος ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου (Ἰησοῦ, *K*) ἐλάλει τε καὶ συνεζήτει πρὸς τοὺς Ἑλληνιστάς· οἱ δὲ ἐπεχείρουν ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν.
30 But they kept trying to take his life. On learning this, the brethren brought him down to Caesarea, and then sent him by sea to Tarsus.
ἐπιγνόντες δὲ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ κατήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς Καισάρειαν καὶ ἐξαπέστειλαν αὐτὸν εἰς Ταρσόν.
31 The Church, however, throughout the whole of Judaea, Galilee and Samaria, had peace and was spiritually built up; and grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord and receiving encouragement from the Holy Spirit.
(Ἡ *N(k)O*) μὲν οὖν (ἐκκλησία *N(K)O*) καθ᾽ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ Γαλιλαίας καὶ Σαμαρείας (εἶχεν *N(k)O*) εἰρήνην, (οἰκοδομουμένη *N(k)O*) καὶ (πορευομένη *N(k)O*) τῷ φόβῳ τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ τῇ παρακλήσει τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος (ἐπληθύνετο. *N(k)O*)
32 Now Peter, as he went to town after town, came down also to God's people at Lud.
Ἐγένετο δὲ Πέτρον διερχόμενον διὰ πάντων κατελθεῖν καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἁγίους τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Λύδδα.
33 There he found a man of the name of Aeneas, who for eight years had kept his bed, through being paralysed.
εὗρεν δὲ ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπόν τινα ὀνόματι Αἰνέαν ἐξ ἐτῶν ὀκτὼ κατακείμενον ἐπὶ (κραβάττου *N(k)O*) ὃς ἦν παραλελυμένος.
34 Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ cures you. Rise and make your own bed." He at once rose to his feet.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος· Αἰνέα, ἰᾶταί σε Ἰησοῦς (ὁ *k*) Χριστός· ἀνάστηθι καὶ στρῶσον σεαυτῷ. καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέστη·
35 And all the people of Lud and Sharon saw him; and they turned to the Lord.
καὶ εἶδαν αὐτὸν πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες Λύδδα καὶ τὸν (Σαρῶνα, *NK(o)*) οἵτινες ἐπέστρεψαν ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον.
36 Among the disciples at Jaffa was a woman called Tabitha, or, as the name may be translated, 'Dorcas.' Her life was wholly devoted to the good and charitable actions which she was constantly doing.
Ἐν Ἰόππῃ δέ τις ἦν μαθήτρια ὀνόματι Ταβιθά, ἣ διερμηνευομένη λέγεται Δορκάς· αὕτη ἦν πλήρης ἔργων ἀγαθῶν καὶ ἐλεημοσυνῶν ὧν ἐποίει·
37 But, as it happened, just at that time she was taken ill and died. After washing her body they laid it out in a room upstairs.
ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἀσθενήσασαν αὐτὴν ἀποθανεῖν· λούσαντες δὲ ἔθηκαν αὐτὴν ἐν ὑπερῴῳ.
38 Lud, however, being near Jaffa, the disciples, who had heard that Peter was at Lud, sent two men to him with an urgent request that he would come across to them without delay.
ἐγγὺς δὲ οὔσης Λύδδας τῇ Ἰόππῃ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Πέτρος ἐστὶν ἐν αὐτῇ, ἀπέστειλαν δύο ἄνδρας πρὸς αὐτὸν παρακαλοῦντες· μὴ (ὀκνήσῃς *N(k)O*) διελθεῖν ἕως (ἡμῶν. *N(K)O*)
39 So Peter rose and went with them. On his arrival they took him upstairs, and the widow women all came and stood by his side, weeping and showing him the underclothing and cloaks and garments of all kinds which Dorcas used to make while she was still with them.
ἀναστὰς δὲ Πέτρος συνῆλθεν αὐτοῖς· ὃν παραγενόμενον ἀνήγαγον εἰς τὸ ὑπερῷον, καὶ παρέστησαν αὐτῷ πᾶσαι αἱ χῆραι κλαίουσαι καὶ ἐπιδεικνύμεναι χιτῶνας καὶ ἱμάτια ὅσα ἐποίει μετ᾽ αὐτῶν οὖσα ἡ Δορκάς.
40 Peter, however, putting every one out of the room, knelt down and prayed, and then turning to the body, he said, "Tabitha, rise." Dorcas at once opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, sat up.
ἐκβαλὼν δὲ ἔξω πάντας ὁ Πέτρος καὶ θεὶς τὰ γόνατα προσηύξατο· καὶ ἐπιστρέψας πρὸς τὸ σῶμα εἶπεν· Ταβιθά, ἀνάστηθι. ἡ δὲ ἤνοιξεν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῆς καὶ ἰδοῦσα τὸν Πέτρον ἀνεκάθισεν.
41 Then, giving her his hand, he raised her to her feet and, calling to him God's people and the widows, he gave her back to them alive.
δοὺς δὲ αὐτῇ χεῖρα ἀνέστησεν αὐτήν· φωνήσας δὲ τοὺς ἁγίους καὶ τὰς χήρας παρέστησεν αὐτὴν ζῶσαν.
42 This incident became known throughout Jaffa, and many believed in the Lord;
γνωστὸν δὲ ἐγένετο καθ᾽ ὅλης τῆς Ἰόππης, καὶ ἐπίστευσαν πολλοὶ ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον.
43 and Peter remained for a considerable time at Jaffa, staying at the house of a man called Simon, a tanner.
ἐγένετο δὲ ἡμέρας ἱκανὰς μεῖναι (αὐτὸν *ko*) ἐν Ἰόππῃ παρά τινι Σίμωνι βυρσεῖ.
