Proverbs 6
1 My son, if thou art surety for thy friend, [if] thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
Mon fils, si tu t’es rendu caution pour ton ami, si tu t’es engagé pour un étranger,
2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
si tu es lié par les paroles de ta bouche, si tu es pris par les paroles de ta bouche,
3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
fais donc ceci, mon ami: dégage-toi! Puisque tu es tombé aux mains de ton prochain, va, prosterne-toi et presse-le vivement!
4 Give not sleep to thy eyes, nor slumber to thy eyelids.
Ne donne ni sommeil à tes yeux, ni assoupissement à tes paupières;
5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand [of the hunter], and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
dégage-toi, comme la gazelle de la main du chasseur, comme l’oiseau de la main de l’oiseleur.
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
Va vers la fourmi ô paresseux; considère ses voies et deviens sage.
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
Elle qui n’a ni chef, ni inspecteur de travaux, ni souverain,
8 Provideth her provisions in the summer, [and] gathereth her food in the harvest.
elle amasse en été de quoi manger, elle recueille pendant la moisson sa nourriture.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
Jusques à quand, ô paresseux, seras-tu couché, quand te lèveras-tu de ton sommeil?
10 [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
« Un peu de sommeil, un peu d’assoupissement, un peu croiser les mains sur son lit. »
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that traveleth, and thy want as an armed man.
Et ta pauvreté viendra comme un voyageur, et ta disette comme un homme en armes!
12 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
Un homme pervers, un homme inique, marche la perversité dans la bouche;
13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
il cligne les yeux, gratte du pied, fait des signes avec les doigts.
14 Frowardness [is] in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
La perversité est dans son cœur, il médite le mal en tout temps, il suscite des querelles.
15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
Aussi sa ruine viendra subitement; il sera brisé tout d’un coup et sans remède.
16 These six [things] doth the LORD hate: yes, seven [are] an abomination to him:
Il y a six choses que hait Yahweh, il y en a sept qu’il a en horreur:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood.
les yeux altiers, la langue menteuse, les mains qui font couler le sang innocent,
18 A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to mischief,
le cœur qui médite des projets coupables, les pieds empressés à courir au mal,
19 A false witness [that] speaketh lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren.
le faux témoin qui profère des mensonges, et celui qui sème la discorde entre frères.
20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
Mon fils, garde le précepte de ton père, et ne rejette pas l’enseignement de ta mère.
21 Bind them continually upon thy heart, [and] tie them about thy neck.
Lie-les constamment sur ton cœur, attache-les à ton cou.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and [when] thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
Il te dirigera dans ta marche, il te gardera dans ton sommeil; à ton réveil, il conversera avec toi.
23 For the commandment [is] a lamp; and the law [is] light; and reproofs of instruction [are] the way of life:
Car le précepte est une lampe, et la loi une lumière, et les avertissements qui instruisent sont le chemin de la vie.
24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
Ils te préserveront de la femme perverse, de la langue doucereuse de l’étrangère.
25 Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
Ne convoite pas sa beauté dans ton cœur, et qu’elle ne te séduise pas par ses paupières.
26 For by means of a lewd woman [a man is brought] to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
Car pour la courtisane on se réduit à un morceau de pain, et la femme mariée prend au piège une vie précieuse.
27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
Se peut-il qu’un homme mette du feu dans son sein, sans que ses vêtements s’enflamment?
28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
Ou bien un homme marchera-t-il sur des charbons ardents sans que ses pieds soient brûlés?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbor's wife; whoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
Ainsi en est-il de celui qui va vers la femme de son prochain: quiconque la touche ne saurait rester impuni.
30 [Men] do not despise a thief, if he stealeth to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
On ne méprise pas un voleur qui dérobe pour satisfaire sa faim, quand il n’a rien à manger:
31 But [if] he is found, he shall restore seven-fold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
surpris, il rend sept fois autant, il donne tout ce qu’il a dans sa maison.
32 [But] whoever committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he [that] doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
Mais celui qui corrompt une femme est dépourvu de sens; il se perd lui-même, celui qui agit de la sorte;
33 A wound and dishonor shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
il ne recueille que plaie et ignominie, et son opprobre ne s’effacera pas.
34 For jealousy [is] the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
Car la jalousie excite la fureur de l’homme outragé; il est sans pitié au jour de la vengeance;
35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
il n’a égard à aucune rançon; il n’en veut pas, quand même tu multiplierais les présents.
