Proverbs 3
1 My son, forget not my law; but let thy heart keep my commandments;
Poikani, älä unhota minun opetustani, vaan sinun sydämesi säilyttäköön minun käskyni;
2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
sillä pitkää ikää, elinvuosia ja rauhaa ne sinulle kartuttavat.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thy heart:
Laupeus ja uskollisuus älkööt hyljätkö sinua. Sido ne kaulaasi, kirjoita ne sydämesi tauluun,
4 So shalt thou find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
niin saat armon ja hyvän ymmärryksen Jumalan ja ihmisten silmien edessä.
5 Trust in the LORD with all thy heart; and lean not to thy own understanding.
Turvaa Herraan kaikesta sydämestäsi äläkä nojaudu omaan ymmärrykseesi.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will direct thy paths.
Tunne hänet kaikilla teilläsi, niin hän sinun polkusi tasoittaa.
7 Be not wise in thy own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
Älä ole viisas omissa silmissäsi. Pelkää Herraa ja karta pahaa.
8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
Se on terveellistä sinun ruumiillesi ja virkistävää sinun luillesi.
9 Honor the LORD with thy substance, and with the first-fruits of all thy increase:
Kunnioita Herraa antamalla varoistasi ja kaiken satosi parhaimmasta,
10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
niin sinun jyväaittasi täyttyvät runsaudella, ja viini pursuu sinun kuurnistasi.
11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
Poikani, älä pidä Herran kuritusta halpana äläkä kyllästy hänen rangaistukseensa;
12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son [in whom] he delighteth.
sillä jota Herra rakastaa, sitä hän rankaisee, niinkuin isä poikaa, joka hänelle rakas on.
13 Happy [is] the man [that] findeth wisdom, and the man [that] getteth understanding.
Autuas se ihminen, joka on löytänyt viisauden, ihminen, joka on saanut taidon.
14 For the merchandise of it [is] better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain of it than fine gold.
Sillä parempi on hankkia sitä kuin hopeata, ja siitä saatu voitto on kultaa jalompi.
15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared to her.
Se on kalliimpi kuin helmet, eivät mitkään kalleutesi vedä sille vertaa.
16 Length of days [is] in her right hand; [and] in her left hand riches and honor.
Pitkä ikä on sen oikeassa kädessä, vasemmassa rikkaus ja kunnia.
17 Her ways [are] ways of pleasantness, and all her paths [are] peace.
Sen tiet ovat suloiset tiet, sen polut rauhaisat kaikki tyynni.
18 She [is] a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy [is every one] that retaineth her.
Elämän puu on se niille, jotka siihen tarttuvat; onnelliset ne, jotka siitä pitävät kiinni.
19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
Herra on viisaudella perustanut maan, taivaat taidolla vahvistanut.
20 By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.
Hänen toimestansa syvyydet kuohuivat esiin, ja pilvet pisaroivat kastetta.
21 My son, let not them depart from thy eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:
Poikani, nämä älkööt häipykö näkyvistäsi, säilytä neuvokkuus ja taidollisuus,
22 So shall they be life to thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
niin ne ovat elämä sinun sielullesi ja kaunistus sinun kaulaasi.
23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
Silloin sinä kuljet tiesi turvallisesti etkä loukkaa jalkaasi.
24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: but thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
Kun menet maata, et pelkää mitään, ja maata mentyäsi on unesi makea.
25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
Pääset peljästymästä äkkikauhistuksia ja turmiota, joka jumalattomat yllättää.
26 For the LORD will be thy confidence, and will keep thy foot from being taken.
Sillä sinä saat luottaa Herraan, hän varjelee sinun jalkasi joutumasta kiinni.
27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thy hand to do [it].
Älä kiellä tarvitsevalta hyvää, milloin sitä tehdä voit.
28 Say not to thy neighbor, Go, and come again, and to-morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
Älä sano lähimmäisellesi: "Mene nyt ja tule toiste, huomenna minä annan", kun sinulla kuitenkin on.
29 Devise not evil against thy neighbor, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.
Älä mieti pahaa lähimmäistäsi vastaan, kun hän luottavaisesti luonasi asuu.
30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he hath done thee no harm.
Älä riitele kenenkään kanssa syyttä, kun ei toinen ole sinulle pahaa tehnyt.
31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
Älä kadehdi väkivallan miestä äläkä hänen teitänsä omiksesi valitse;
32 For the froward [is] abomination to the LORD: but his secret [is] with the righteous.
sillä väärämielinen on Herralle kauhistus, mutta oikeamielisille hän on tuttava.
33 The curse of the LORD [is] in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
Herran kirous on jumalattoman huoneessa, mutta vanhurskasten asuinsijaa hän siunaa.
34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace to the lowly.
Pilkkaajille hänkin on pilkallinen, mutta nöyrille hän antaa armon.
35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
Viisaat perivät kunnian, mutta tyhmäin osa on häpeä.
