Proverbs 25
1 These [are] also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
Les proverbes qui suivent émanent également de Salomon et ont été colligés par les gens d’Ezéchias, roi de Juda.
2 [It is] the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings [is] to search out a matter.
La gloire de l’Eternel, c’est de s’entourer de mystère; la gloire du roi est d’examiner les choses à fond.
3 The heaven for hight, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings [is] unsearchable.
Tout comme les cieux en hauteur, la terre en profondeur, le cœur des rois est insondable.
4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.
Qu’on sépare les scories de l’argent, et l’orfèvre le travaillera en objet d’art.
5 Take away the wicked [from] before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
Qu’on éloigne le méchant de la présence du roi, et son trône se trouvera affermi par la justice.
6 Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great [men]:
Ne te pavane pas devant le roi et n’occupe pas la place des grands.
7 For better [it is] that it be said to thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldst be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thy eyes have seen.
Car mieux vaut pour toi qu’on te dise: "Monte là!" que si on t’abaissait devant les nobles, chose que tes yeux ont déjà pu voir.
8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.
Ne t’engage pas inconsidérément dans les luttes: tu t’exposerais à ne plus savoir que faire à la fin, si ton prochain te couvrait de confusion.
9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbor [himself]; and reveal not a secret to another:
As-tu un procès avec, ton prochain, défends-le, mais sans dévoiler des secrets qui ne t’appartiennent pas:
10 Lest he that heareth [it] put thee to shame, and thy infamy turn not away.
tu serais blâmé par ceux qui t’entendent et décrié sans retour.
11 A word fitly spoken [is like] apples of gold in pictures of silver.
Des pommes d’or dans des vases d’argent ajourés, telle une parole prononcée à propos.
12 [As] an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, [so is] a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
Un anneau d’or, un collier de perles, tel le sage qui fait la morale à une oreille attentive.
13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, [so is] a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.
Comme une fraîcheur de neige au temps de la moisson, tel le, messager, fidèle à son mandat: il restaure l’âme de son maître.
14 Whoever boasteth himself of a false gift [is like] clouds and wind without rain.
Des nuages et du vent, mais de pluie point! Tel est l’homme qui fait grand bruit de ses dons illusoires.
15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
Par une patience inlassable, on capte la faveur d’un supérieur; un doux parler brise la plus dure résistance.
16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled with it, and vomit it.
As-tu trouvé du miel, manges-en à ta suffisance; mais évite de t’en bourrer: tu le rejetterais.
17 Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbor's house; lest he be weary of thee, and [so] hate thee.
Espace tes visites dans la maison de ton ami: il en aurait bientôt assez de toi et te prendrait en grippe.
18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor [is] a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
Une massue, un glaive, une flèche acérée, tel l’homme qui porte un faux témoignage contre son prochain.
19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble [is like] a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
Une dent branlante, un pied chancelant, voilà ce que vaut au jour du malheur la confiance qu’on a dans un traître.
20 [As] he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, [and as] vinegar upon nitre; so [is] he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.
Enlever son vêtement par un jour glacial, verser du vinaigre sur du nitre, ainsi fait celui qui entonne des chants pour un cœur affligé.
21 If thy enemy shall hunger, give him bread to eat; and if he shall thirst, give him water to drink:
Si ton ennemi a faim, donne lui à manger; s’il a soif, donne-lui à boire;
22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD will reward thee.
car ainsi tu attises des charbons sur sa tète, et le Seigneur t’en récompensera.
23 The north wind driveth away rain: so [doth] an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.
Le vent du Nord produit la pluie, et la langue qui calomnie en secretles visages aigris.
24 [It is] better to dwell in a corner of the house-top, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
Mieux vaut habiter l’angle d’un toit que de partager un logis avec une femme acariâtre.
25 [As] cold waters to a thirsty soul, so [is] good news from a far country.
De l’eau fraîche sur un corps fatigué, telle une bonne nouvelle venant d’un pays lointain.
26 A righteous man falling down before the wicked [is as] a turbid fountain, and a corrupt spring.
Une source boueuse, une fontaine aux eaux troubles, tel est le juste qui fléchit devant le méchant.
27 [It is] not good to eat much honey: so [for men] to search their own glory [is not] glory.
Manger trop de miel ne vaut rien; mais étudier à fond les choses difficiles est un honneur.
28 He that [hath] no rule over his own spirit [is like] a city [that is] broken down, [and] without walls.
Une ville démantelée, sans remparts, tel est l’homme dont le tempérament ne connaît pas de frein.
