Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee:
Quando te assentares a comer com um governador, attenta bem para o que se te poz diante,
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou [art] a man given to appetite.
E põe uma faca á tua garganta, se és homem de grande appetite.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they [are] deceitful food.
Não cubices os seus manjares gostosos, porque são pão de mentiras.
4 Labor not to be rich: cease from thy own wisdom.
Não te cances para enriqueceres; dá de mão á tua prudencia.
5 Wilt thou set thy eyes upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly make to themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle towards heaven.
Porventura fitarás os teus olhos n'aquillo que não é nada? porque certamente se fará azas e voará ao céu como a aguia
6 Eat thou not the bread of [him that hath] an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties:
Não comas o pão d'aquelle que tem o olho maligno, nem cubices os seus manjares gostosos.
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart [is] not with thee.
Porque, como imaginou na sua alma, te dirá: Come e bebe; porém o seu coração não estará comtigo.
8 The morsel [which] thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
Vomitarias o bocado que comeste, e perderias as tuas suaves palavras.
9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
Não falles aos ouvidos do tolo, porque desprezará a sabedoria das tuas palavras.
10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
Não removas os limites antigos, nem entres nas herdades dos orphãos,
11 For their redeemer [is] mighty; he will plead their cause with thee.
Porque o seu redemptor é o Forte, que pleiteará a sua causa contra ti.
12 Apply thy heart to instruction, and thy ears to the words of knowledge.
Applica á disciplina o teu coração, e os teus ouvidos ás palavras do conhecimento.
13 Withhold not correction from the child: for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
Não retires a disciplina da creança, quando a fustigares com a vara; nem por isso morrerá.
Tu a fustigarás com a vara, e livrarás a sua alma do inferno. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
Filho meu, se o teu coração fôr sabio, alegrar-se-ha o meu coração, sim, o meu proprio,
16 Yes, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
E exultarão os meus rins, quando os teus labios fallarem coisas rectas.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but [be thou] in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
Não inveje aos peccadores o teu coração; antes sê no temor do Senhor todo o dia
18 For surely there is an end; and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
Porque devéras ha um bom fim: não será cortada a tua expectação.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.
Ouve tu, filho meu, e sê sabio, e dirige no caminho o teu coração.
20 Be not among wine-bibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
Não estejas entre os beberrões de vinho, nem entre os comilões de carne.
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.
Porque o beberrão e o comilão empobrecerão; e a somnolencia faz trazer os vestidos rotos.
22 Hearken to thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Ouve a teu pae, que te gerou, e não desprezes a tua mãe, quando vier a envelhecer.
23 Buy the truth, and sell [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
Compra a verdade, e não a vendas: a sabedoria, e a disciplina, e a prudencia.
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise [child] shall have joy of him.
Grandemente se regozijará o pae do justo, e o que gerar a um sabio se alegrará n'elle.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bore thee shall rejoice.
Alegrem-se teu pae e tua mãe, e regozije-se a que te gerou.
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thy eyes observe my ways.
Dá-me, filho meu, o teu coração, e os teus olhos observem os meus caminhos.
27 For a lewd woman [is] a deep ditch; and a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.
Porque cova profunda é a prostituta, e poço estreito a estranha.
28 She also lieth in wait as [for] a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
Tambem ella, como um salteador, se põe a espreitar, e multiplica entre os homens os iniquos.
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
Para quem são os ais? para quem os pezares? para quem as pelejas? para quem as queixas? para quem as feridas sem causa? e para quem os olhos vermelhos?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
Para os que se demoram perto do vinho, para os que andam buscando bebida misturada.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its color in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright.
Não olhes para o vinho quando se mostra vermelho, quando resplandece no copo e se escoa suavemente.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
No seu fim morderá como a cobra, e como o basilisco picará.
33 Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.
Os teus olhos olharão para as mulheres estranhas, e o teu coração fallará perversidades.
34 And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
E serás como o que dorme no meio do mar, e como o que dorme no topo do mastro.
35 They have stricken me, [wilt thou say], [and] I was not sick; they have beaten me, [and] I felt [it] not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
E dirás: Espancaram-me, e não me doeu; maçaram-me, e não o senti; quando virei a despertar? ainda tornarei a buscal-a outra vez
