Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee:
Gdy usiądziesz do posiłku z władcą, zważaj pilnie, co jest przed tobą;
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou [art] a man given to appetite.
I przyłóż nóż do gardła, jeśli jesteś łakomy.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they [are] deceitful food.
Nie pragnij jego przysmaków, bo to pokarm zwodniczy.
4 Labor not to be rich: cease from thy own wisdom.
Nie zabiegaj o bogactwo, porzuć swoją mądrość.
5 Wilt thou set thy eyes upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly make to themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle towards heaven.
Czy obrócisz swoje oczy na to, co jest niczym? Bo bogactwa robią sobie skrzydła i ulatują do nieba jak orzeł.
6 Eat thou not the bread of [him that hath] an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties:
Nie jedz chleba człowieka, który ma złe oko, ani nie pożądaj jego przysmaków.
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart [is] not with thee.
Bo jak myśli w swym sercu, taki [on jest]. Jedz i pij – mówi do ciebie, ale jego serce nie jest z tobą.
8 The morsel [which] thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
Kęs, który zjadłeś, zwrócisz i utracisz swoje wdzięczne słowa.
9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
Nie mów do uszu głupca, bo wzgardzi mądrością twoich słów.
10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
Nie przesuwaj dawnej granicy i nie wchodź na pole sierot.
11 For their redeemer [is] mighty; he will plead their cause with thee.
Bo ich obrońca jest mocny, przeprowadzi ich sprawę przeciwko tobie.
12 Apply thy heart to instruction, and thy ears to the words of knowledge.
Nakłoń swoje serce na pouczenie, a swe uszy na słowa rozumne.
13 Withhold not correction from the child: for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
Nie szczędź dziecku karcenia, [bo] jeśli je bijesz rózgą, nie umrze.
Będziesz je bił rózgą, a jego duszę ocalisz od piekła. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
Synu mój, jeśli twoje serce będzie mądre, moje serce będzie się radowało, właśnie moje;
16 Yes, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
I moje nerki będą się weselić, gdy twoje usta będą mówiły to, co jest prawe.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but [be thou] in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
Niech twoje serce nie zazdrości grzesznikom, lecz każdego dnia [postępuj] w bojaźni PANA;
18 For surely there is an end; and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
Bo koniec jest pewny i twoja nadzieja nie będzie zawiedziona.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.
Słuchaj, synu mój, i bądź mądry, i skieruj swoje serce na drogę.
20 Be not among wine-bibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
Nie bywaj wśród pijaków ani wśród obżerających się mięsem;
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.
Bo pijak i żarłok zubożeją, a ospały będzie chodził w łachmanach.
22 Hearken to thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Słuchaj ojca, który cię spłodził, a nie gardź matką, gdy się zestarzeje.
23 Buy the truth, and sell [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
Kupuj prawdę i nie sprzedawaj [jej]; [kupuj] mądrość, karność i rozum.
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise [child] shall have joy of him.
Ojciec sprawiedliwego będzie się wielce radował, a kto spłodzi mądrego, będzie się z niego cieszył.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bore thee shall rejoice.
Niech się weseli twój ojciec i matka i niech się raduje ta, która cię rodziła.
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thy eyes observe my ways.
Synu mój, daj mi swoje serce, a niech twoje oczy strzegą moich dróg.
27 For a lewd woman [is] a deep ditch; and a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.
Bo nierządnica [jest] głębokim dołem, a cudza [kobieta jest] ciasną studnią.
28 She also lieth in wait as [for] a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
Ona też czyha jak zbój i pomnaża przewrotnych wśród ludzi.
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
U kogo biada? U kogo żal? U kogo kłótnie? U kogo szemranie? Kto ma rany bez powodu? Kto ma zaczerwienione oczy?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
Ci, którzy przesiadują przy winie; ci, którzy idą szukać zmieszanego wina.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its color in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright.
Nie patrz na wino, gdy się czerwieni; gdy wydaje łunę swą w kielichu, a samo się przesuwa.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
Na koniec ugryzie jak wąż i ukąsi jak żmija;
33 Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.
Twoje oczy będą patrzeć na cudze kobiety, a twoje serce będzie mówiło rzeczy przewrotne;
34 And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
I będziesz jak ten, który leży na środku morza, i jak ten, który śpi na szczycie masztu;
35 They have stricken me, [wilt thou say], [and] I was not sick; they have beaten me, [and] I felt [it] not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
[Powiesz]: Bili mnie, a nie bolało, uderzyli mnie, a [nic] nie czułem. Gdy się obudzę, znów go poszukam.
