Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee:
जब तुम किसी अधिकारी के साथ भोजन के लिए बैठो, जो कुछ तुम्हारे समक्ष है, सावधानीपूर्वक उसका ध्यान करो.
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou [art] a man given to appetite.
उपयुक्त होगा कि तुम अपनी भूख पर नियंत्रण रख भोजन की मात्रा कम ही रखो.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they [are] deceitful food.
उसके उत्कृष्ट व्यंजनों की लालसा न करना, क्योंकि वे सभी धोखे के भोजन हैं.
4 Labor not to be rich: cease from thy own wisdom.
धनाढ्य हो जाने की अभिलाषा में स्वयं को अतिश्रम के बोझ के नीचे दबा न डालो.
5 Wilt thou set thy eyes upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly make to themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle towards heaven.
जैसे ही तुम्हारी दृष्टि इस पर जा ठहरती है, यह अदृश्य हो जाती है, मानो इसके पंख निकल आए हों, और यह गरुड़ के समान आकाश में उड़ जाता है.
6 Eat thou not the bread of [him that hath] an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties:
भोजन के लिए किसी कंजूस के घर न जाना, और न उसके उत्कृष्ट व्यंजनों की लालसा करना;
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart [is] not with thee.
क्योंकि वह उस व्यक्ति के समान है, जो कहता तो है, “और खाइए न!” किंतु मन ही मन वह भोजन के मूल्य का हिसाब लगाता रहता है. वस्तुतः उसकी वह इच्छा नहीं होती, जो वह कहता है.
8 The morsel [which] thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
तुमने जो कुछ अल्प खाया है, वह तुम उगल दोगे, और तुम्हारे अभिनंदन, प्रशंसा और सम्मान के मधुर उद्गार भी व्यर्थ सिद्ध होंगे.
9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
जब मूर्ख आपकी बातें सुन रहा हो तब कुछ न कहना. क्योंकि तुम्हारी ज्ञान की बातें उसके लिए तुच्छ होंगी.
10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
पूर्वकाल से चले आ रहे सीमा-चिन्ह को न हटाना, और न किसी अनाथ के खेत को हड़प लेना.
11 For their redeemer [is] mighty; he will plead their cause with thee.
क्योंकि सामर्थ्यवान है उनका छुड़ाने वाला; जो तुम्हारे विरुद्ध उनका पक्ष लड़ेगा.
12 Apply thy heart to instruction, and thy ears to the words of knowledge.
शिक्षा पर अपने मस्तिष्क का इस्तेमाल करो, ज्ञान के तथ्यों पर ध्यान लगाओ.
13 Withhold not correction from the child: for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
संतान पर अनुशासन के प्रयोग से न हिचकना; उस पर छड़ी के प्रहार से उसकी मृत्यु नहीं हो जाएगी.
यदि तुम उस पर छड़ी का प्रहार करोगे तो तुम उसकी आत्मा को नर्क से बचा लोगे. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
मेरे पुत्र, यदि तुम्हारे हृदय में ज्ञान का निवास है, तो मेरा हृदय अत्यंत प्रफुल्लित होगा;
16 Yes, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
मेरा अंतरात्मा हर्षित हो जाएगा, जब मैं तुम्हारे मुख से सही उद्गार सुनता हूं.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but [be thou] in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
दुष्टों को देख तुम्हारे हृदय में ईर्ष्या न जागे, तुम सर्वदा याहवेह के प्रति श्रद्धा में आगे बढ़ते जाओ.
18 For surely there is an end; and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
भविष्य सुनिश्चित है, तुम्हारी आशा अपूर्ण न रहेगी.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.
मेरे बालक, मेरी सुनकर विद्वत्ता प्राप्त करो, अपने हृदय को सुमार्ग के प्रति समर्पित कर दो:
20 Be not among wine-bibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
उनकी संगति में न रहना, जो मद्यपि हैं और न उनकी संगति में, जो पेटू हैं.
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.
क्योंकि मतवालों और पेटुओं की नियति गरीबी है, और अति नींद उन्हें चिथड़े पहनने की स्थिति में ले आती है.
22 Hearken to thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
अपने पिता की शिक्षाओं को ध्यान में रखना, वह तुम्हारे जनक है, और अपनी माता के वयोवृद्ध होने पर उन्हें तुच्छ न समझना.
23 Buy the truth, and sell [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
सत्य को मोल लो, किंतु फिर इसका विक्रय न करना; ज्ञान, अनुशासन तथा समझ संग्रहीत करते जाओ.
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise [child] shall have joy of him.
सबसे अधिक उल्लसित व्यक्ति होता है धर्मी व्यक्ति का पिता; जिसने बुद्धिमान पुत्र को जन्म दिया है, वह पुत्र उसके आनंद का विषय होता है.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bore thee shall rejoice.
वही करो कि तुम्हारे माता-पिता आनंदित रहें; एवं तुम्हारी जननी उल्लसित.
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thy eyes observe my ways.
मेरे पुत्र, अपना हृदय मुझे दे दो; तुम्हारे नेत्र मेरी जीवनशैली का ध्यान करते रहें,
27 For a lewd woman [is] a deep ditch; and a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.
वेश्या एक गहरा गड्ढा होती है, पराई स्त्री एक संकरा कुंआ है.
28 She also lieth in wait as [for] a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
वह डाकू के समान ताक लगाए बैठी रहती है इसमें वह मनुष्यों में विश्वासघातियों की संख्या में वृद्धि में योग देती जाती है.
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
कौन है शोक संतप्त? कौन है विपदा में? कौन विवादग्रस्त है? और कौन असंतोष में पड़ा है? किस पर अकारण ही घाव हुए है? किसके नेत्र लाल हो गए हैं?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
वे ही न, जिन्होंने देर तक बैठे दाखमधु पान किया है, वे ही न, जो विविध मिश्रित दाखमधु का पान करते रहे हैं?
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its color in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright.
उस लाल आकर्षक दाखमधु पर दृष्टि ही मत डालो और न तब, जब यह प्याले में उंडेली जाती है, अन्यथा यह गले से नीचे उतरने में विलंब नहीं करेगी.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
अंत में सर्पदंश के समान होता है दाखमधु का प्रभाव तथा विषैले सर्प के समान होता है उसका प्रहार.
33 Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.
तुम्हें असाधारण दृश्य दिखाई देने लगेंगे, तुम्हारा मस्तिष्क कुटिल विषय प्रस्तुत करने लगेगा.
34 And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
तुम्हें ऐसा अनुभव होगा, मानो तुम समुद्र की लहरों पर लेटे हुए हो, ऐसा, मानो तुम जलयान के उच्चतम स्तर पर लेटे हो.
35 They have stricken me, [wilt thou say], [and] I was not sick; they have beaten me, [and] I felt [it] not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
तब तुम यह दावा भी करने लगोगे, “उन्होंने मुझे पीटा था, फिर भी मुझ पर इसका प्रभाव नहीं पड़ा. उन्होंने मुझे मारा पर मुझे तो लगा ही नहीं! कब टूटेगी मेरी यह नींद? लाओ, मैं एक प्याला और पी लूं.”
