Proverbs 22
1 A [good] name [is] rather to be chosen than great riches, [and] loving favor rather than silver and gold.
La bonne renommée vaut mieux que de grandes richesses, et l’estime a plus de prix que l’argent et que l’or.
2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD [is] the maker of them all.
Le riche et le pauvre se rencontrent; Yahweh est leur auteur à tous deux.
3 A prudent [man] foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.
L’homme prudent voit le mal et se cache, mais les simples passent outre et en portent la peine.
4 By humility [and] the fear of the LORD [are] riches, and honor, and life.
Le fruit de l’humilité, c’est la crainte de Yahweh; c’est la richesse, la gloire et la vie.
5 Thorns [and] snares [are] in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.
Des épines et des pièges sont sur la voie du pervers; celui qui garde son âme s’en éloigne.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Instruis l’enfant selon la voie qu’il doit suivre; et, même lorsqu’il sera vieux, il ne s’en détournera pas.
7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower [is] servant to the lender.
Le riche domine sur les pauvres, et celui qui emprunte est l’esclave de celui qui prête.
8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.
Celui qui sème l’injustice moissonne le malheur, et la verge de sa colère disparaît.
9 He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
L’homme au regard bienveillant sera béni, parce qu’il donne de son pain au pauvre.
10 Cast out the scorner, and contention shall end; yes, strife and reproach shall cease.
Chasse le moqueur, et la querelle prendra fin; la dispute et l’outrage cesseront.
11 He that loveth pureness of heart, [for] the grace of his lips the king [shall be] his friend.
Celui qui aime la pureté du cœur, et qui a la grâce sur les lèvres, a le roi pour ami.
12 The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.
Les yeux de Yahweh gardent la science, mais il confond les paroles du pervers.
13 The slothful [man] saith, [There is] a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.
Le paresseux dit: « Il y a un lion dehors! Je serai tué au milieu des places! »
14 The mouth of strange women [is] a deep pit: he that is abhorred by the LORD shall fall therein.
La bouche des étrangères est une fosse profonde; celui contre qui Yahweh est irrité y tombera.
15 Foolishness [is] bound in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
La folie est attachée au cœur de l’enfant; la verge de la discipline l’éloignera de lui.
16 He that oppresseth the poor to increase his [riches], [and] he that giveth to the rich, [shall] surely [come] to want.
Opprimer un pauvre, c’est l’enrichir; donner à un riche, c’est l’appauvrir.
17 Bow down thy ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart to my knowledge.
Prête l’oreille et écoute les paroles des sages, applique ton cœur à mon enseignement.
18 For [it is] a pleasant thing if thou keepest them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.
Car c’est une chose agréable, si tu les gardes au dedans de toi: puissent-elles toutes demeurer sur tes lèvres!
19 That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.
Afin que ta confiance repose sur Yahweh, c’est toi que je veux instruire aujourd’hui.
20 Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,
N’ai-je pas, plusieurs fois déjà, mis pour toi par écrit des conseils et des enseignements?
21 That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send to thee?
Pour t’enseigner la vérité des choses certaines, afin que tu répondes par des paroles vraies à eux qui t’envoient. Ne pas opprimer le pauvre.
22 Rob not the poor, because he [is] poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:
Ne dépouille pas le pauvre parce qu’il est pauvre, et n’opprime pas le malheureux à la porte.
23 For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.
Car Yahweh prendra en main leur cause, et il ôtera la vie à ceux qui les auront dépouillés. Ne pas se lier avec l’homme colère.
24 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
Ne lie pas société avec l’homme colère, et ne va pas avec l’homme violent,
25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
de peur que tu n’apprennes ses voies, et que tu ne prépares un piège à ton âme. Ne pas se porter caution.
26 Be not thou [one] of them that strike hands, [or] of them that are sureties for debts.
Ne sois pas de ceux qui prennent des engagements, de ceux qui se portent caution pour dettes.
27 If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
Si tu n’as pas de quoi payer, pourquoi t’exposer à ce qu’ on enlève ton lit de dessous toi? Respect des bornes.
28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
Ne déplace pas la borne ancienne, que tes pères ont posée. Succès dans le travail.
29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean [men].
Vois-tu un homme habile dans son ouvrage? Il demeurera auprès des rois, il ne demeurera pas auprès des gens obscurs.
