< Proverbs 20 >

1 Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whoever is deceived by it is not wise.
Daadhiin wayinii nama qoostuu, dhugaatiin cimaan immoo waccuu nama godha; namni isaaniin fudhatamus ogeessa miti.
2 The fear of a king [is] as the roaring of a lion: [whoever] provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own soul.
Dheekkamsi mootii akkuma aaduu leencaa ti; namni isa aarsus lubbuu ofii isaa dhaba.
3 [It is] an honor for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
Lola irraa fagaachuun ulfina; gowwaan hundi garuu lolatti ariifata.
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; [therefore] shall he beg in harvest, and [have] nothing.
Dhibaaʼaan yeroodhaan hin qotatu; kanaafuu inni yeroo haamaatti ni ilaala malee homaa hin argatu.
5 Counsel in the heart of man [is like] deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Yaadni qalbii namaa akkuma bishaan gad fagoo ti; hubataan namaa garuu ni waraabbata.
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
Namni hedduun akka jaalala hin dhumne qabu dubbata; nama amanamaa garuu eenyutu argachuu dandaʼa?
7 The just [man] walketh in his integrity: his children [are] blessed after him.
Namni qajeelaan amanamummaadhaan jiraata; ijoolleen isaa warri booddee dhalatanis ni eebbifamu.
8 A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Mootiin tokko yeroo murtii kennuuf teessoo isaa irra taaʼutti, waan hamaa hunda ijuma isaatiin gingilchee addaan baasa.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
Eenyutu, “Ani garaa koo qulqulleeffadheera; ani qulqulluu dha; cubbuus hin qabu” jechuu dandaʼa?
10 Divers weights, [and] divers measures, both of them [are] alike abomination to the LORD.
Madaalii jalʼaa fi safartuu jalʼaa lamaanuu Waaqayyo ni balfa.
11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work [is] pure, and whether [it is] right.
Mucaan xinnaan iyyuu amalli isaa qulqulluu fi qajeelaa taʼuun isaa hojii isaatiin beekama.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
Gurra dhagaʼuu fi ija argu, lachanuu Waaqayyotu uume.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thy eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
Akka hin hiyyoomneef, hirriba hin jaallatin; midhaan akka quuftuuf, dammaqii jiraadhu.
14 [It is] naught, [it is] naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone, then he boasteth.
Namni waa bitatu, “Wanni kun gaarii miti; wanni kun gaarii miti!” jedha; ergasii immoo dhaqee waaʼee waan bitate sanaa boona.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge [are] a precious jewel.
Warqeen ni jira; lulli diimaanis baayʼinaan jira; arrabni beekumsa dubbatu garuu faaya gatii guddaa ti.
16 Take his garment that is surety [for] a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
Nama nama ormaatiif wabii taʼe irraa uffata isaa fudhadhu; yoo inni dubartii ormaatiif wabii taʼes uffata sana qabdii qabadhu.
17 Bread of deceit [is] sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Nyaanni gowwoomsaadhaan argame namatti miʼaawa; dhuma irratti garuu afaan nama sanaa cirrachatu guuta.
18 [Every] purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
Gorsaan karoora baafadhu; qajeelfama ogummaatiin waraana bani.
19 He that goeth about [as] a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
Hamattuun icciitii baafti; kanaafuu odeessituu wajjin tokkummaa hin qabaatin.
20 Whoever curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
Namni tokko yoo abbaa isaa yookaan haadha isaa abaare, ibsaan isaa dukkana hamaa keessatti dhaama.
21 An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end of it shall not be blessed.
Dhaalli jalqabumatti dafee argame dhumni isaa eebba hin qabaatu.
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; [but] wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
Ati, “Yakka ati hojjette kanaaf ani gatii kee siifin kenna!” hin jedhin; Waaqayyoon eeggadhu; inni si baasa.
23 Divers weights [are] an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance [is] not good.
Waaqayyo madaalii jalʼaa ni balfa; safartuu sobaattis hin gammadu.
24 Man's goings [are] of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
Adeemsi namaa Waaqayyoon qajeelfama. Yoos namni kam iyyuu akkamiin karaa ofii isaa hubachuu dandaʼa ree?
25 [It is] a snare to the man [who] devoureth [that which is] holy, and after vows to make inquiry.
Namni utuu itti hin yaadin, “Wanni kun Waaqaaf qulqulleeffameera” jedhee ergasii immoo waan wareege sana gaabbe kiyyoo isatti taʼa.
26 A wise king scatterreth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
Mootiin ogeessi hamoota gingilchee addaan baasa; geengoo ittiin midhaan dhaʼan illee isaan irra oofa.
27 The spirit of man [is] the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
Ibsaan Waaqayyoo hafuura namaa sakattaʼa; inni keessa namaa illee isumaan qora.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upheld by mercy.
Jaalallii fi amanamummaan mootii tokko nagaan jiraachisu; teessoon mootummaa isaas jaalalaan eegama.
29 The glory of young men [is] their strength: and the beauty of old men [is] the gray head.
Ulfinni dargaggootaa jabina isaanii ti; arriin mataa kabaja nama umuriin dheeratee ti.
30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so [do] stripes the inward parts of the belly.
Abootteen nama madeessu hammina nama irraa qulqulleessa; garaffiin immoo keessa namaa geeddara.
