Proverbs 19
1 Better [is] the poor that walketh in his integrity, than [he that is] perverse in his lips, and is a fool.
2 Also, [that] the soul [be] without knowledge, [it is] not good; and he that hasteth with [his] feet sinneth.
3 The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.
La folie de l'homme souille ses voies, et c'est Dieu qu'il accuse en son cœur.
4 Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbor.
Les richesses attirent à l'homme beaucoup d'amis; au contraire, le pauvre est délaissé même de l'ami qu'il a.
5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [he that] speaketh lies shall not escape.
Le faux témoin ne sera pas impuni; celui qui appelle à tort en justice en portera la peine.
6 Many will entreat the favor of the prince: and every man [is] a friend to him that giveth gifts.
Beaucoup se prosternent en face des rois; tout méchant est pour l'homme un opprobre.
7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth [them with] words, [yet] they [are] wanting [to him].
Celui qui hait son frère pauvre est bien loin de l'amitié; c'est une bonne pensée qui fait approcher d'elle ceux qui la connaissent, et le sage la trouvera. Avoir fait beaucoup de mal entraîne à faire plus de mal encore; celui qui use de paroles provocatrices ne sera pas sauvé.
8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.
Celui qui possède la sagesse est ami de soi-même, et celui qui garde la prudence trouvera le bien.
9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [he that] speaketh lies shall perish.
Le faux témoin ne sera pas impuni; celui qui attise une méchanceté périra par elle.
10 Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
Les délices ne sont pas pour l'insensé; qu'un serviteur ne se mette pas à commander avec orgueil.
11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and [it is] his glory to pass over a transgression.
L'homme miséricordieux est patient; sa gloire retombe comme la punition sur le pécheur.
12 The king's wrath [is] as the roaring of a lion; but his favor [is] as dew upon the grass.
La menace d'un roi est comme le rugissement du lion, et sa sérénité comme une rosée sur une prairie.
13 A foolish son [is] the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife [are] a continual dropping.
Le fils insensé est la honte de son père; les vœux qu'une courtisane paye de ses faveurs ne sont pas purs.
14 House and riches [are] the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife [is] from the LORD.
Les pères partagent entre les enfants leur maison et leurs richesses; mais la femme bien en harmonie avec un homme vient du Seigneur.
15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.
La crainte possède l'efféminé; l'âme de l'oisif est indigente.
16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; [but] he that despiseth his ways shall die.
Garder les commandements, c'est sauver son âme; se négliger en sa voie, c'est courir à sa perte.
17 He that hath pity upon the poor, lendeth to the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.
Celui qui est miséricordieux envers les pauvres prête à usure au Seigneur; Dieu le rétribuera selon ce qu'il aura donné.
18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.
Corrige ton fils; c'est ainsi qu'il sera ton espérance. Ne sois pas exalté en ton âme jusqu'à l'orgueil.
19 A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver [him], yet thou must do it again.
L'homme malveillant sera puni sévèrement; s'il nuit à autrui, il nuit aussi à son âme.
20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
Écoute, ô mon fils, les instructions de ton père pour être sage jusqu'à ta dernière heure.
21 [There are] many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
De nombreuses pensées roulent dans le cœur de l'homme; le conseil du Seigneur demeure dans tous les siècles.
22 The desire of a man [is] his kindness: and a poor man [is] better than a liar.
La miséricorde est un fruit pour l'homme; mieux vaut un mendiant juste qu'un riche trompeur.
23 The fear of the LORD [tendeth] to life: and [he that hath it] shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
La crainte du Seigneur est la vie de l'homme; celui qui n'a pas cette crainte habitera des lieux où la doctrine est inconnue.
24 A slothful [man] hideth his hand in [his] bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.
Celui qui cache ses mains sous son manteau, avec de mauvais desseins, n'aura garde de les porter à sa bouche.
25 Smite a scorner and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, [and] he will understand knowledge.
Les coups qui le flagellent rendent l'insensé plus réfléchi; mais si l'on reprend le sage, il comprend aussitôt la réprimande.
26 He that wasteth [his] father, [and] chaseth away [his] mother, [is] a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.
Celui qui n'honore pas son père et repousse sa mère sera couvert de honte, et recevra un blâme.
27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction [that causeth] to err from the words of knowledge.
Le fils qui néglige de garder les instructions de son père tramera de mauvais desseins.
28 An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.
Celui qui répond pour un jeune insensé outrage la justice; la bouche des impies dévore l'iniquité.
29 Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
Des fouets sont préparés pour les pervers, et des châtiments pour les insensés.
