Proverbs 17
1 Better [is] a dry morsel, and quietness with it, than a house full of sacrifices [with] strife.
૧જે ઘર મિજબાનીથી ભરપૂર હોય પણ કજિયાકંકાસવાળું હોય તેના કરતાં શાંતિ સહિત રોટલીનો સૂકો ટુકડો સારો છે.
2 A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
૨ડહાપણથી વર્તનાર ચાકર બદનામી કરાવનાર દીકરા પર અધિકાર ચલાવશે અને એ ચાકરને દીકરાના ભાઈઓમાં વારસનો ભાગ મળશે.
3 The fining-pot [is] for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
૩ચાંદીને ગાળવા માટે કુલડી હોય છે અને સોનાને માટે ભઠ્ઠી હોય છે. પણ અંત: કરણને પારખનાર યહોવાહ છે.
4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips: [and] a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
૪જે કોઈ વ્યક્તિ અનિષ્ટ વાત સાંભળે છે તે દુષ્ટ છે; જે જૂઠો છે તે નુકસાનકારક જીભ તરફ ધ્યાન આપે છે.
5 He that mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; [and] he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
૫જે ગરીબની મશ્કરી કરે છે તે તેના સર્જનહારની નિંદા કરે છે અને જે કોઈ બીજાની વિપત્તિને જોઈને રાજી થાય છે તે શિક્ષા પામ્યા વગર રહેશે નહિ.
6 Children's children [are] the crown of old men; and the glory of children [is] their fathers.
૬સંતાનોનાં સંતાનો વૃદ્ધ પુરુષનો મુગટ છે અને સંતાનોનો મહિમા તેઓનાં માતાપિતા છે.
7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
૭ભાવપૂર્ણ ભાષણ મૂર્ખને ઘટતું નથી; મહાપુરુષોને માટે જૂઠું બોલવું એ અઘટિત છે.
8 A gift [is as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
૮જેને બક્ષિસ મળે છે તે તેની નજરમાં મૂલ્યવાન પથ્થર જેવી છે; જ્યાં જ્યાં તે જાય છે, ત્યાં ત્યાં તે ઉદય પામે છે.
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth [very] friends.
૯દોષને ઢાંકનાર પ્રેમ શોધે છે, પણ તેને જ વારંવાર બોલ્યા કરનાર ઇષ્ટ મિત્રોમાં અંતર પાડે છે.
10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than a hundred stripes into a fool.
૧૦મૂર્ખને સો ફટકાના કરતાં બુદ્ધિમાનને એક ઠપકાનો ઘા વધારે ઊંડી અસર કરે છે.
11 An evil [man] seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
૧૧દુર્જન હંમેશા આફતો શોધ્યા કરે છે. તે માટે તેની સામે ક્રૂર સંદેશાવાહક મોકલવામાં આવશે.
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
૧૨જેનાં બચ્ચાં છીનવી લીધાં હોય એવી રીંછણ કોઈને મળજો; પણ મૂર્ખાઈ કરતો મૂર્ખ કોઈને ન મળો.
13 Whoever rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
૧૩જો કોઈ ભલાઈનો બદલો બૂરાઈથી વાળે છે, તો તેના ઘરમાંથી બૂરાઈ દૂર થશે નહિ.
14 The beginning of strife [is as] when one letteth out water: therefore withdraw from contention, before it be meddled with.
૧૪કોઈ પાણીને બહાર આવવાનું બાકું કરી આપે, તે માફક જ ઝઘડાનો આરંભ છે, માટે ઝઘડો થયા અગાઉ સમાધાન કરી લો.
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both [are] abomination to the LORD.
૧૫જે કોઈ દુષ્ટને નિર્દોષ ઠરાવે છે અને જે કોઈ નેકીવાનને દોષપાત્ર ઠરાવે છે તે બન્નેને યહોવાહ ધિક્કારે છે.
16 Why [is there] a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing [he hath] no heart [to it]?
૧૬જ્યારે મૂર્ખને બુદ્ધિ હોતી નથી ત્યારે ડહાપણ ખરીદવા તેના હાથમાં મૂલ્ય ક્યાંથી હોય?
17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
૧૭મિત્ર સર્વ સમયે પ્રીતિ રાખે છે અને ભાઈ સંકટના સમયને માટે જ જન્મ્યો છે.
18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, [and] becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
૧૮અક્કલહીન વગરનો માણસ જ પોતાના પડોશીનો જામીન થાય છે.
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: [and] he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
૧૯કજિયો ચાહનાર પાપ કરે છે; જે પોતાનો દરવાજો વિશાળ બનાવે છે, તે વિનાશ શોધે છે.
20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
૨૦કુટિલ હૃદયના માણસનું કદી હિત થતું નથી; આડી જીભવાળો માણસ વિપત્તિમાં આવી પડે છે.
21 He that begetteth a fool [doeth it] to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
૨૧મૂર્ખને પેદા કરનાર દુ: ખી થાય છે; મૂર્ખના પિતાને કદી આનંદ થતો નથી.
22 A merry heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
૨૨આનંદી હૃદય એ ઉત્તમ ઔષધ છે, પણ ઘાયલ થયેલું મન હાડકાંને સૂકવી નાખે છે.
23 A wicked [man] taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
૨૩દુષ્ટ માણસ છાની રીતે લાંચ લઈને ઇનસાફના માર્ગ ઊંધા વાળે છે.
24 Wisdom [is] before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool [are] in the ends of the earth.
૨૪બુદ્ધિમાન વ્યક્તિની આંખ ડહાપણ પર જ હોય છે, પણ મૂર્ખની આંખો પૃથ્વીના છેડા પર ચોંટેલી હોય છે.
25 A foolish son [is] a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
૨૫મૂર્ખ પુત્ર પિતાને માટે વ્યથારૂપ અને પોતાની માતાને માટે કડવાશરૂપ છે.
26 Also to punish the just [is] not good, [nor] to strike princes for equity.
૨૬વળી નિર્દોષને દંડ કરવો તથા પ્રામાણિકપણાને લીધે સજ્જનોને મારવા એ યોગ્ય નથી.
27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: [and] a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
૨૭થોડાબોલો માણસ શાણો છે, ઠંડા મિજાજનો માણસ બુદ્ધિમાન હોય છે.
28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: [and] he that shutteth his lips [is esteemed] a man of understanding.
૨૮મૂર્ખ ચૂપ રહે ત્યાં સુધી તે ડાહ્યો ગણાય છે, જ્યાં સુધી તે બોલે નહિ, ત્યાં સુધી તે શાણો લેખાય છે.
