Proverbs 14
1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
La sapienza di una massaia costruisce la casa, la stoltezza la demolisce con le mani.
2 He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but [he that is] perverse in his ways despiseth him.
Chi procede con rettitudine teme il Signore, chi si scosta dalle sue vie lo disprezza.
3 In the mouth of the foolish [is] a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.
Nella bocca dello stolto c'è il germoglio della superbia, ma le labbra dei saggi sono la loro salvaguardia.
4 Where no oxen [are], the crib [is] clean: but much increase [is] by the strength of the ox.
Senza buoi, niente grano, l'abbondanza del raccolto sta nel vigore del toro.
5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.
Il testimone vero non mentisce, quello falso spira menzogne.
6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and [findeth it] not: but knowledge [is] easy to him that understandeth.
Il beffardo ricerca la sapienza ma invano, la scienza è cosa facile per il prudente.
7 Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not [in him] the lips of knowledge.
Allontànati dall'uomo stolto, e non ignorerai le labbra sapienti.
8 The wisdom of the prudent [is] to understand his way: but the folly of fools [is] deceit.
La sapienza dell'accorto sta nel capire la sua via, ma la stoltezza degli sciocchi è inganno.
9 Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous [there is] favor.
Fra gli stolti risiede la colpa, fra gli uomini retti la benevolenza.
10 The heart knoweth its own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with its joy.
Il cuore conosce la propria amarezza e alla sua gioia non partecipa l'estraneo.
11 The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.
La casa degli empi rovinerà, ma la tenda degli uomini retti avrà successo.
12 There is a way which seemeth right to a man, but the end of it [are] the ways of death.
C'è una via che sembra diritta a qualcuno, ma sbocca in sentieri di morte.
13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth [is] heaviness.
Anche fra il riso il cuore prova dolore e la gioia può finire in pena.
14 The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man [shall be satisfied] from himself.
Chi è instabile si sazierà dei frutti della sua condotta, l'uomo dabbene si sazierà delle sue opere.
15 The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.
L'ingenuo crede quanto gli dici, l'accorto controlla i propri passi.
16 A wise [man] feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.
Il saggio teme e sta lontano dal male, lo stolto è insolente e presuntuoso.
17 [He that is] soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.
L'iracondo commette sciocchezze, il riflessivo sopporta.
18 The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
Gli inesperti erediteranno la stoltezza, i prudenti si coroneranno di scienza.
19 The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
I malvagi si inchinano davanti ai buoni, gli empi davanti alle porte del giusto.
20 The poor is hated even by his own neighbor: but the rich [hath] many friends.
Il povero è odioso anche al suo amico, numerosi sono gli amici del ricco.
21 He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy [is] he.
Chi disprezza il prossimo pecca, beato chi ha pietà degli umili.
22 Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth [shall be] to them that devise good.
Non errano forse quelli che compiono il male? Benevolenza e favore per quanti compiono il bene.
23 In all labor there is profit: but the talk of the lips [tendeth] only to penury.
In ogni fatica c'è un vantaggio, ma la loquacità produce solo miseria.
24 The crown of the wise [is] their riches: [but] the foolishness of fools [is] folly.
Corona dei saggi è la loro accortezza, corona degli stolti la loro stoltezza.
25 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful [witness] speaketh lies.
Salvatore di vite è un testimone vero; chi spaccia menzogne è un impostore.
26 In the fear of the LORD [is] strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
Nel timore del Signore è la fiducia del forte; per i suoi figli egli sarà un rifugio.
27 The fear of the LORD [is] a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
Il timore del Signore è fonte di vita, per evitare i lacci della morte.
28 In the multitude of people [is] the king's honor: but in the want of people [is] the destruction of the prince.
Un popolo numeroso è la gloria del re; la scarsità di gente è la rovina del principe.
29 [He that is] slow to wrath [is] of great understanding: but [he that is] hasty of spirit exalteth folly.
Il paziente ha grande prudenza, l'iracondo mostra stoltezza.
30 A sound heart [is] the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.
Un cuore tranquillo è la vita di tutto il corpo, l'invidia è la carie delle ossa.
31 He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoreth him hath mercy on the poor.
Chi opprime il povero offende il suo creatore, chi ha pietà del misero lo onora.
32 The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.
Dalla propria malvagità è travolto l'empio, il giusto ha un rifugio nella propria integrità.
33 Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but [that which is] in the midst of fools is made known.
In un cuore assennato risiede la sapienza, ma in seno agli stolti può scoprirsi?
34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin [is] a reproach to any people.
La giustizia fa onore a una nazione, ma il peccato segna il declino dei popoli.
35 The king's favor [is] towards a wise servant: but his wrath is [against] him that causeth shame.
Il favore del re è per il ministro intelligente, il suo sdegno è per chi lo disonora.
