Nehemiah 2
1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, [that] wine [was] before him: and I took up the wine, and gave [it] to the king. Now I had not [before] been sad in his presence.
Au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, comme le vin était devant lui, je ramassai le vin et le donnai au roi. Or, je n'avais jamais été triste auparavant en sa présence.
2 Wherefore the king said to me, Why [is] thy countenance sad, seeing thou [art] not sick? this [is] nothing but sorrow of heart. Then I was very greatly afraid,
Le roi me dit: « Pourquoi ton visage est-il triste, puisque tu n'es pas malade? Ce n'est rien d'autre que de la tristesse de cœur. » Alors j'eus très peur.
3 And said to the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchers, [lieth] waste, and its gates are consumed with fire?
Je dis au roi: « Que le roi vive à jamais! Pourquoi mon visage ne serait-il pas triste, alors que la ville, le lieu des tombeaux de mes pères, est dévastée et que ses portes ont été consumées par le feu? »
4 Then the king said to me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
Alors le roi me dit: « Quelle est ta requête? » J'ai donc prié le Dieu des cieux.
5 And I said to the king, If it should please the king, and if thy servant hath found favor in thy sight, that thou wouldst send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' sepulchers, that I may build it.
Je dis au roi: « Si le roi le trouve bon et si ton serviteur a trouvé grâce à tes yeux, je te demande de m'envoyer en Juda, dans la ville des tombeaux de mes pères, afin que je la bâtisse. »
6 And the king said to me, (the queen also sitting by him, ) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
Le roi me dit (la reine était aussi assise près de lui): « Combien de temps durera ton voyage? Quand reviendras-tu? » Il plut au roi de m'envoyer, et je lui fixai un délai.
7 Moreover, I said to the king, If it should please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah:
Je dis au roi: « Si le roi le veut, qu'on remette des lettres aux gouverneurs de l'autre côté du fleuve, afin qu'ils me laissent passer jusqu'à ce que j'arrive en Juda;
8 And a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which [appertained] to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
et une lettre à Asaph, gardien de la forêt du roi, afin qu'il me donne du bois pour faire des poutres pour les portes de la citadelle près du temple, pour le mur de la ville et pour la maison que j'occuperai. » Le roi fit droit à mes demandes, à cause de la bonne main de mon Dieu sur moi.
9 Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.
Puis je me rendis auprès des gouverneurs de l'autre côté du fleuve, et je leur remis les lettres du roi. Or le roi avait envoyé avec moi des chefs de l'armée et des cavaliers.
10 When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard [of it], it grieved them exceedingly that there had come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.
Lorsque Sanballat, le Horonite, et Tobija, le serviteur ammonite, l'apprirent, cela les affligea beaucoup, car un homme était venu chercher le bien des enfants d'Israël.
11 So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
J'allai donc à Jérusalem, et j'y restai trois jours.
12 And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I [any] man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither [was there any] beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.
Je me levai la nuit, moi et quelques hommes avec moi. Je n'ai dit à personne ce que mon Dieu avait mis dans mon cœur de faire pour Jérusalem. Il n'y avait pas d'autre animal avec moi que celui que je montais.
13 And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon-well, and to the dung-port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and their gates were consumed with fire.
Je suis sorti de nuit par la porte de la vallée, vers le puits du chacal, puis vers la porte du fumier, et j'ai inspecté les murs de Jérusalem, qui étaient en ruine, et ses portes étaient consumées par le feu.
14 Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but [there was] no place for the beast [that was] under me to pass.
Puis je suis allé jusqu'à la porte de la source et jusqu'à l'étang du roi, mais il n'y avait pas de place pour le passage de l'animal qui était sous moi.
15 Then I went up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and [so] returned.
Je montai de nuit près du ruisseau et j'inspectai la muraille; puis je revins sur mes pas, et j'entrai par la porte de la vallée, et je revins ainsi.
16 And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told [it] to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
Les chefs ne savaient pas où j'étais allé, ni ce que j'avais fait. Je ne l'avais pas encore dit aux Juifs, ni aux prêtres, ni aux nobles, ni aux chefs, ni aux autres qui faisaient le travail.
17 Then said I to them, Ye see the distress that we [are] in, how Jerusalem [lieth] waste, and its gates are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we may be no more a reproach.
Je leur dis alors: « Vous voyez la mauvaise situation dans laquelle nous sommes, comment Jérusalem est dévastée et ses portes brûlées par le feu. Venez, rebâtissons la muraille de Jérusalem, afin que nous ne soyons pas déshonorés. »
18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken to me. And they said, Let us rise and build. So they strengthened their hands for [this] good [work].
Je leur parlai de la main de mon Dieu qui a été bonne sur moi, et aussi des paroles du roi qu'il m'avait adressées. Ils ont dit: « Levons-nous et construisons. » Ils ont donc fortifié leurs mains pour le bon travail.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard [it], they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What [is] this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?
Mais lorsque Sanballat, le Horonite, Tobija, le serviteur ammonite, et Geshem, l'Arabe, l'entendirent, ils se moquèrent de nous et nous méprisèrent, et dirent: « Quelle est cette chose que vous faites? Allez-vous vous rebeller contre le roi? »
20 Then I answered them, and said to them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
Je leur répondis, et je leur dis: « Le Dieu des cieux nous fera prospérer. C'est pourquoi nous, ses serviteurs, nous nous lèverons et nous bâtirons; mais vous n'avez ni part, ni droit, ni monument à Jérusalem. »
