< Jonah 2 >
1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,
Then Jonah made prayer to the Lord his God from the inside of the fish, and said,
2 And said, I cried by reason of my affliction to the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, [and] thou heardst my voice. (Sheol )
In my trouble I was crying to the Lord, and he gave me an answer; out of the deepest underworld I sent up a cry, and you gave ear to my voice. (Sheol )
3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods encompassed me: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
For you have put me down into the deep, into the heart of the sea; and the river was round about me; all your waves and your rolling waters went over me.
4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again towards thy holy temple.
And I said, I have been sent away from before your eyes; how may I ever again see your holy Temple?
5 The waters encompassed me, [even] to the soul: the depth inclosed me on every side, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
The waters were circling round me, even to the neck; the deep was about me; the sea-grass was twisted round my head.
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars [was] about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
I went down to the bases of the mountains; as for the earth, her walls were about me for ever: but you have taken up my life from the underworld, O Lord my God.
7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came to thee, into thy holy temple.
When my soul in me was overcome, I kept the memory of the Lord: and my prayer came in to you, into your holy Temple.
8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
The worshippers of false gods have given up their only hope.
9 But I will sacrifice to thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay [that] which I have vowed. Salvation [is] of the LORD.
But I will make an offering to you with the voice of praise; I will give effect to my oaths. Salvation is the Lord's.
10 And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry [land].
And at the Lord's order, the fish sent Jonah out of its mouth on to the dry land.
