Job 41
1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with a hook? or his tongue with a cord [which] thou lettest down?
Kannst du das Krokodil mit einer Angel ziehen und seine Zunge mit dem Stricke niederdrücken?
2 Canst thou put a hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?
Kannst du ihm durch die Nase eine Binsenschnur durchziehen? Durchbohren mit dem Haken seine Backe?
3 Will he make many supplications to thee? will he speak soft [words] to thee?
Wird's dir viel Flehens machen; wird's dir wohl gute Worte geben?
4 Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
Mit dir Verträge schließen, daß du's zum Knecht für immer nehmest?
5 Wilt thou play with him as [with] a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
Kannst du mit ihm wohl spielen wie mit einem Vöglein? Und bindest du's für deine Mädchen an,
6 Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants.
die seinetwegen Freundinnen einladen und unter Mägdlein es verlosen?
7 Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?
Kannst du mit Stacheln seine Haut ihm spicken und seinen Kopf mit schwirrenden Harpunen?
8 Lay thy hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
Leg' deine Hand einmal daran! Bedenke, welch ein Kampf! Du tust's nie wieder."
9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not [one] be cast down even at the sight of him?
"Ja, seine Hoffnung wird getäuscht; bei seinem bloßen Anblick stürzt er hin.
10 None [is so] fierce that he dare rouse him: who then is able to stand before me?
Kein Mensch ist so verwegen, daß er's reizt. 'Wer stellt sich vor mich hin?
11 Who hath first benefited me, that I should repay [him]? [whatever is] under the whole heaven is mine.
Wer griff mich an, und ich ließ diesen unversehrt entkommen? Mein wär ein solcher unterm ganzen Himmel.'
12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
Von seinen Gliedern kann ich nimmer schweigen und nicht von seiner Kraft, vom Ebenmaße seines Baues.
13 Who can discover the face of his garment? [or] who can come [to him] with his double bridle?
Wer kann sein äußeres Kleid beschreiben, und wer sein doppeltes Gebiß abzeichnen?
14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth [are] terrible around.
Wer läßt in seines Rachens Doppeltüre sehen? Um seine Zähne lagert Schrecken.
15 [His] scales [are his] pride, shut together [as with] a close seal.
Sein Rücken ist aus Rinnen voller Schilde, in engem Anschluß fest verschlossen.
16 One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
Eins reiht sich an das andere; dazwischen gibt es keine Fuge.
17 They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.
Ein jedes hängt am anderen fest. Sie schließen unzertrennlich sich zusammen.
18 His sneezings flash light, and his eyes [are] like the eyelids of the morning.
Sein Niesen läßt das Licht aufleuchten, und seine Augen sind der Morgenröte Wimpern gleich.
19 Out of his mouth go burning lamps, [and] sparks of fire dart forth.
Aus seinem Rachen fahren Fackeln, sprühen Feuerfunken.
20 Out of his nostrils issueth smoke, as [out] of a seething pot or caldron.
Aus seinen Nüstern fährt ein Dampf gleichwie aus einem siedend heißen Topf.
21 His breath kindleth coals, and a flame issueth from his mouth.
Sein Odem zündet Kohlen an; aus seinem Rachen fahren Flammen.
22 In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
In seinem Nacken wohnt die Kraft; ein Sack hängt vorn an ihm herab.
23 The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
Die Wampen seines Fleisches haften fest, ihm angegossen, unbeweglich.
24 His heart is as firm as a stone; yes, as hard as a piece of the nether [millstone].
Sein Herz fest wie ein Stein, fest wie ein unterer Mühlstein.
25 When he raiseth himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.
Wenn's auffährt, zagen Stärkste, sie taumeln ob der Wasserwirbel.
26 The sword of him that attacketh him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.
Wenn man's mit einem Schwerte trifft, hält dies nicht stand, nicht Lanze, Wurfgeschoß noch Panzer.
27 He esteemeth iron as straw, [and] brass as rotten wood.
Das Eisen achtet es für Stroh, für morsches Holz das Erz.
28 The arrow cannot make him flee: sling-stones are turned with him into stubble.
Nicht können's Pfeile je durchbohren, und Schleudersteine sind ihm wie Strohhalme.
29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.
Auch Keulen gelten ihm wie Halme, und übers Lanzenschwirren spottet es.
30 Sharp stones [are] under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.
Und unten sind an ihm ganz spitze Scherben. Wie eine Dreschwalze, so fährt es auf dem Schlamm dahin.
31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.
Wie einen Topf, so läßt's die Tiefe brodeln; es macht das Wasser wie in einem Salbenkessel.
32 He maketh a path to shine after him; [one] would think the deep [to be] hoary.
Ein Pfad aufleuchtet hinter ihm; man hält die Flut für Silberhaar.
33 Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
Auf Erden ist nicht seinesgleichen; geschaffen ist's, sich nicht zu fürchten.
34 He beholdeth all high [things]: he [is] a king over all the children of pride.
Auf alles Mächtige schaut es voll Stolz, ist's doch ein König über alle stolzen Tiere."
