Job 28
1 Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold [where] they fine [it].
Oui, on a pu trouver la source de l'argent, et le lieu où gît cet or qu'on affine;
2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass [is] melted [out of] the stone.
on extrait le fer de la terre, et la fusion change la pierre en airain;
3 He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shades of death.
on sait faire cesser les ténèbres, et sonder parfaitement la roche obscure et sombre:
4 The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant: [even the waters] forgotten by the foot: they are dried up, they have gone away from men.
on perce un puits loin des lieux habités; les pieds [du mineur] oublient de le servir, et il est là suspendu, loin des humains il est balancé,
5 [As for] the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
La terre d'où sort la nourriture, est dans ses profondeurs bouleversée comme par le feu;
6 The stones of it [are] the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.
c'est dans ses pierres qu'est le lieu du saphir couvert d'une poudre d'or;
7 [There is] a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vultur's eye hath not seen:
nul oiseau de proie n'en sait le sentier, et l'œil du vautour ne le découvre pas,
8 The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
il n'est point foulé par les bêtes sauvages, et le lion n'y passe point.
9 He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.
L'homme met la main au roc le plus dur, et fait par leurs bases crouler des montagnes;
10 He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
Dans le rocher il ouvre des canaux, et son œil voit alors tout ce qui est précieux;
11 He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and [the thing that is] hid he bringeth forth to light.
il arrête les eaux qui suintent, et produit au jour ce qui était caché.
12 But where shall wisdom be found? and where [is] the place of understanding?
Mais la sagesse, où peut-on la trouver? Et quel est donc le lieu où gît la science?
13 Man knoweth not the price of it; neither is it found in the land of the living.
L'homme ne saurait en faire l'estimation, et elle ne se trouve pas sur la terre des vivants.
14 The depth saith, It [is] not in me: and the sea saith, [It is] not with me.
L'abîme dit: Elle n'est pas chez moi! et la mer dit: Elle n'est pas avec moi!
15 It cannot be obtained for gold, neither shall silver be weighed [for] the price of it.
On ne l'obtient point contre de l'or fin, et pour la payer on ne pèse pas d'argent.
16 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
On ne la met point dans la même balance avec l'or pur d'Ophir, avec le précieux onyx et le saphir.
17 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it [shall not be for] jewels of fine gold.
On ne peut lui comparer l'or, ni le verre, ni la vaisselle d'or, comme son équivalent.
18 No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom [is] above rubies.
A côté d'elle on ne saurait citer ni les coraux, ni le cristal; et qui aurait la sagesse, aurait plus que des perles.
19 The topaz of Cush shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
On ne peut lui comparer la topaze d'Ethiopie, ni la peser avec l'or affiné.
20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where [is] the place of understanding?
La sagesse donc, d'où vient-elle? et où donc est le séjour de la science?
21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
Elle est cachée aux yeux de tous les vivants, et voilée aux oiseaux des Cieux.
22 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame of it with our ears.
L'abîme et la mort disent: De nos oreilles nous en ouïmes parler.
23 God understandeth the way of it, and he knoweth its place.
Dieu en sait le chemin, et Il en connaît le séjour;
24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, [and] seeth under the whole heaven;
car Il voit jusqu'aux bouts de la terre, et son regard embrasse tout ce qui est sous le ciel.
25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
Quand Il donnait une pesanteur au vent, et qu'il pondérait les eaux avec mesure;
26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
quand Il traçait à la pluie des lois, et une route à la foudre bruyante;
27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
alors Il la voyait, et Il la proclama, Il l'établit, et la contrôla,
28 And to man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that [is] wisdom; and to depart from evil [is] understanding.
et Il dit à l'homme: Voici, la crainte du Seigneur, c'est là la sagesse, et fuir le mal, c'est là la science.
