Job 15
1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
Et Eliphaz le Thémanite répondant dit:
2 Should a wise men utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
Est-il sage celui qui, rempli d'amertume, s'exprimera comme si l'esprit d'intelligence l'inspirait,
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches with which he can do no good?
En exhalant des plaintes inconvenantes et des discours inutiles?
4 Yes, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
N'as-tu pas répudié toute crainte pour un tenir un tel langage devant le Seigneur?
5 For thy mouth uttereth thy iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
Tu es coupable en ces mots de ta bouche; tu n'as point apprécié ceux des hommes capables.
6 Thy own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yes, thy own lips testify against thee.
C'est ta bouche qui t'accuse, et non moi; tes lèvres portent témoignage contre toi.
7 [Art] thou the first man [that] was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
Qu'y a-t-il? Es-tu le premier mortel qui ait existé? As-tu été produit avant les montagnes?
8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
As-tu entendu le Seigneur commander; Dieu t'a-t-il admis en ses conseils; la sagesse réside-t-elle en toi?
9 What knowest thou that we know not? [what] understandest thou, which [is] not in us?
Que sais-tu que nous ne sachions; que comprends-tu que nous ne comprenions?
10 With us [are] both the gray headed and very aged men, much older than thy father.
L'un de nous est un vieillard plus chargé de jours que ne l'a été ton père.
11 [Are] the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
Tu as été châtié faiblement à cause des péchés que tu as commis, et tes paroles sont superbes et hautaines.
12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
Qu'a donc osé ton cœur et sur qui as-tu porté les yeux,
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest [such] words go out of thy mouth?
Pour que tu t'emportes à ce point devant le Seigneur et que tu laisses de telle paroles sortir de ta bouche?
14 What [is] man, that he should be clean? and [he who is] born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
Qui donc, étant mortel, sera irréprochable? Qui donc étant né de la femme, sera semblable au Juste?
15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
Puisque Dieu n'a pas confiance en ses saints et que devant lui le ciel n'est pas pur,
16 How much more abominable and filthy [is] man, who drinketh iniquity like water?
Souffre donc qu'il considère comme impur et profane l'homme qui boit l'iniquité à pleines coupes.
17 I will show thee, hear me; and that [which] I have seen, I will declare;
Je vais te dire, écoute-moi, je vais te révéler ce que j'ai vu,
18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid [it]:
Ce que rapportent les sages, ce qu'ils avaient appris de leurs pères,
19 To whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
Les sages à qui seuls la terre a été donnée et que jamais l'étranger n'a assaillis:
20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all [his] days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
Les jours de l'impie se passent dans l'inquiétude; ceux du puissant de la terre sont comptés.
21 A dreadful sound [is] in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
Il s'effraye des bruits que son oreille recueille, et lorsqu'il croit jouir d'un moment de paix, sa catastrophe est prochaine.
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for by the sword.
Qu'il ne s'imagine pas revenir des ténèbres; car déjà il est livré à des mains de fer.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying], Where [is it]? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
Il est réservé à rassasier les vautours; il n'ignore pas lui-même qu'il attend sa chute; le sombre jour est près de l'emporter.
24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
La nécessité, l'affliction vont le saisir et tomber sur lui, comme un chef de guerre qui combat au premier rang.
25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
Car il s'est attaqué au Fort; il a levé la tête avec orgueil devant le Seigneur.
26 He runneth upon him, [even] on [his] neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
Il a couru contre Dieu l'outrage à la bouche, le dos couvert d'un épais bouclier.
27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on [his] flanks.
L'embonpoint gonflait son visage, et son ventre engraissé descendait sur ses cuisses.
28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, [and] in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
Puisse-t-il passer les nuits dans des villes désertes et se loger en des demeures inhabitées; que d'autres emportent ce que les siens auront préparé.
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection of it upon the earth.
Qu'il n'ajoute pas à ses richesses; qu'il ne lui reste rien de ce qu'il possède; qu'il ne projette plus d'ombre sur la terre.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
Qu'il n'échappe pas à l'obscurité, que le vent flétrisse ses bourgeons et que ses fleurs tombent.
31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompense.
Qu'il ne s'imagine pas pouvoir subsister, car il ne réalisera que des choses vaines.
32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
Sa récolte sera détruite avant la maturité; ses arbustes ne grossiront pas.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
Qu'il soit cueilli comme un raisin vert; qu'il sèche comme une fleur d'olivier.
34 For the congregation of hypocrites [shall be] desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
Car la mort porte témoignage contre l'impie; et le feu brûlera les demeures de ceux qui se laissent gagner par les présents.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
La race des pervers ne concevra que des douleurs, elle n'enfantera que de vanités, et le seul fruit de ses entrailles sera la fraude.
