Job 1
1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name [was] Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and shunned evil.
Il y avait dans le pays de Hus un homme nommé Job; cet homme était intègre, droit, craignant Dieu et éloigné du mal.
2 And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
Il lui naquit sept fils et trois filles.
3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
Il possédait sept mille brebis, trois mille chameaux, cinq cents paires de bœufs, cinq cent ânesses et un très grand nombre de serviteurs; et cet homme était le plus grand de tous les fils de l'Orient.
4 And his sons went and feasted [in their] houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
Ses fils avaient coutume d'aller les uns chez les autres et de se donner un festin, chacun à leur tour, et ils envoyaient inviter leurs trois sœurs à venir manger et boire avec eux.
5 And it was so, when the days of [their] feasting were ended, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings [according] to the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
Et, quand le cercle des festins était fini, Job envoyait chercher ses fils et les purifiait; puis il se levait de bon matin et offrait un holocauste pour chacun d'eux, car il se disait: « Peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché et offensé Dieu dans leur cœur!... » Et Job faisait ainsi chaque fois.
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
Il arriva un jour que, les fils de Dieu étant venus se présenter devant Yahweh, Satan vint aussi au milieu d'eux.
7 And the LORD said to Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down upon it.
Et Yahweh dit à Satan: « D'où viens-tu? » Satan répondit à Yahweh et dit: « De parcourir le monde et de m'y promener. »
8 And the LORD said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that [there is] none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and shunneth evil?
Yahweh dit à Satan: « As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job? Il n'y a pas d'homme comme lui sur la terre, intègre, droit, craignant Dieu et éloigné du mal. »
9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for naught?
Satan répondit à Yahweh: « Est-ce gratuitement que Job craint Dieu?
10 Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
Ne l'as-tu pas entouré comme d'une clôture, lui, sa maison et tout ce qui lui appartient? Tu as béni l'œuvre de ses mains, et ses troupeaux couvrent le pays.
11 But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
Mais étends la main, touche à tout ce qui lui appartient, et on verra s'il ne te maudit pas en face! »
12 And the LORD said to Satan, Behold, all that he hath [is] in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
Yahweh dit à Satan: « Voici, tout ce qui lui appartient est en ton pouvoir; seulement ne porte pas la main sur lui. » Et Satan se retira de devant la face de Yahweh.
13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters [were] eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
Or un jour que ses fils et ses filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné,
14 And there came a messenger to Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
un messager vint dire à Job: « Les bœufs étaient à labourer et les ânesses paissaient autour d'eux;
15 And the Sabeans fell [upon them], and took them away; yes, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only have escaped alone to tell thee.
tout à coup les Sabéens sont survenus et les ont enlevés. Ils ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée, et je me suis échappé seul pour te l'annoncer. »
16 While he [was] yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God hath fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only have escaped alone to tell thee.
Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre arriva et dit: « Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel; il a embrasé les brebis et les serviteurs et les a dévorés, et je me suis échappé seul pour te l'annoncer. »
17 While he [was] yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yes, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only have escaped alone to tell thee.
Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre arriva et dit: « Les Chaldéens, partagés en trois bandes, se sont jetés sur les chameaux et les ont enlevés. Ils ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée, et je me suis échappé seul pour te l'annoncer. »
18 While he [was] yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters [were] eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre arriva et dit: « Tes fils et tes filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin chez leur frère aîné,
19 And behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only have escaped alone to tell thee.
et voilà qu'un grand vent s'est élevé de l'autre côté du désert et a saisi les quatre coins de la maison; elle s'est écroulée sur les jeunes gens, et ils sont morts, et je me suis échappé seul pour te l'annoncer. »
20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell upon the ground, and worshiped,
Alors Job se leva, il déchira son manteau et se rasa la tête; puis, se jetant par terre, il adora
21 And said, Naked came I from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
et dit: « Nu je suis sorti du sein de ma mère, et nu j'y retournerai. Yahweh a donné, Yahweh a ôté; que le nom de Yahweh soit béni! »
22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
En tout cela, Job ne pécha point et ne dit rien d'insensé contre Dieu.
