Jeremiah 8
1 At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves:
En ce temps-là, dit Yahvé, on tirera de leurs sépulcres les os des rois de Juda, les os de ses princes, les os des prêtres, les os des prophètes et les os des habitants de Jérusalem.
2 And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshiped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.
Ils les étendront devant le soleil, la lune et toute l'armée du ciel, qu'ils ont aimée, qu'ils ont servie, après laquelle ils ont marché, qu'ils ont cherchée et qu'ils ont adorée. Ils ne seront pas recueillis et ne seront pas enterrés. Ils seront comme du fumier à la surface de la terre.
3 And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, who remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.
Tous ceux qui resteront de cette famille méchante, dans tous les lieux où je les aurai chassés, choisiront la mort plutôt que la vie, dit l'Éternel des Armées.
4 Moreover, thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?
Tu leur diras: « Yahvé dit: "'Les hommes tombent-ils et ne se relèvent-ils pas? Est-ce qu'on se détourne et qu'on ne revient pas?
5 Why [then] hath this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.
Pourquoi donc le peuple de Jérusalem a-t-il régressé par un perpétuel retour en arrière? Ils s'accrochent à la tromperie. Ils refusent de revenir.
6 I hearkened and heard, [but] they spoke not aright: no man repented of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth to the battle.
J'ai écouté et entendu, mais ils n'ont pas dit ce qui est juste. Personne ne se repent de sa méchanceté en disant: « Qu'ai-je fait? » Tout le monde se tourne vers son parcours, comme un cheval qui fonce tête baissée dans la bataille.
7 Yes, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.
Oui, la cigogne dans le ciel connaît les temps qui lui sont impartis. La tourterelle, l'hirondelle et la grue observent le moment de leur venue; mais mon peuple ne connaît pas la loi de Yahvé.
8 How do ye say, We [are] wise, and the law of the LORD [is] with us? Lo, certainly in vain he hath made [it]; the pen of the scribes [is] in vain.
"'Comment dites-vous: « Nous sommes sages, et la loi de Yahvé est avec nous »? » Mais voici que la fausse plume des scribes a fait de cela un mensonge.
9 The wise [men] are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom [is] in them?
Les sages sont déçus. Ils sont consternés et pris au piège. Voici qu'ils ont rejeté la parole de Yahvé. Quel genre de sagesse y a-t-il en eux?
10 Therefore will I give their wives to others, [and] their fields to them that shall inherit [them]: for every one from the least even to the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even to the priest every one dealeth falsely.
Je donnerai donc leurs femmes à d'autres. et leurs champs à ceux qui les posséderont. Car tous, depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, se livrent à la convoitise; depuis le prophète jusqu'au prêtre, tout le monde fait du faux.
11 For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when [there is] no peace.
Ils ont légèrement guéri la blessure de la fille de mon peuple, en disant, « Paix, paix », quand il n'y a pas de paix.
12 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? no, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
N'ont-ils pas eu honte quand ils ont commis des abominations? Non, ils n'avaient pas du tout honte. Ils ne pouvaient pas rougir. Ils tomberont donc parmi ceux qui tombent. Au temps de leur visite, ils seront renversés, dit Yahvé.
13 I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: [there shall be] no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig-tree, and the leaf shall fade; and [the things that] I have given to them shall pass away from them.
"'Je les anéantirai, dit Yahvé. Il n'y aura pas de raisins sur la vigne, pas de figues sur le figuier, et la feuille se fanera. Les choses que je leur ai données disparaîtra d'eux. »
14 Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.
« Pourquoi restons-nous assis? Rassemblez-vous! Entrons dans les villes fortifiées, et faisons silence là-bas; car Yahvé notre Dieu nous a fait taire, et nous a donné de l'eau empoisonnée à boire, parce que nous avons péché contre Yahvé.
15 We looked for peace, but no good [came]; [and] for a time of health, and behold, trouble!
Nous avons cherché la paix, mais rien de bon n'est venu; et pour un temps de guérison, et voici la consternation!
16 The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they have come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.
On entend l'ébrouement de ses chevaux depuis Dan. Toute la terre tremble au son du hennissement de ses forts; car ils sont venus, et ont dévoré le pays et tout ce qu'il contient, la ville et ceux qui l'habitent. »
17 For behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which [will] not [be] charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD.
« Car voici, je vais envoyer des serpents, des vipères parmi vous, qui ne sera pas charmé; et ils vous mordront », dit Yahvé.
18 [When] I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart [is] faint in me.
Oh, si je pouvais me consoler du chagrin! Mon cœur est faible au fond de moi.
19 Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a distant country: [Is] not the LORD in Zion? [is] not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, [and] with strange vanities?
Voici la voix du cri de la fille de mon peuple, venant d'un pays très lointain: « Yahvé n'est-il pas à Sion? Son Roi n'est-il pas en elle? » « Pourquoi m'ont-ils provoqué à la colère avec leurs images gravées, et avec des idoles étrangères? »
20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.
« La récolte est passée. L'été est terminé, et nous ne sommes pas sauvés. »
21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.
A cause du malheur de la fille de mon peuple, je suis blessé. Je suis en deuil. Le désarroi s'est emparé de moi.
22 [Is there] no balm in Gilead: [is there] no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered.
N'y a-t-il pas de baume en Galaad? Il n'y a pas de médecin là-bas? Pourquoi alors la santé de la fille de mon peuple n'est-elle pas rétablie?
