Genesis 30

1 And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.

Alors Rachel voyant qu elle ne faisait point d'enfants à Jacob, fut jalouse de Léa sa sœur; et dit à Jacob: Donne-moi des enfants, autrement je suis morte.

2 And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel; and he said, [Am] I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

Et Jacob se mit fort en colère contre Rachel, et lui dit: Suis-je au lieu de Dieu, qui t'a empêchée d'avoir des enfants?

3 And she said, Behold, my maid Bilhah, go in to her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.

Et elle dit: Voilà ma servante Bilha; va vers elle et elle enfantera sur mes genoux, et j'aurai des enfants par elle.

4 And she gave him Bilhah, her handmaid, for a wife: and Jacob went in to her.

Elle lui donna donc Bilha sa servante pour femme, et Jacob vint vers elle.

5 And Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son.

Et Bilha conçut, et enfanta un fils à Jacob.

6 And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore she called his name Dan.

Et Rachel dit: Dieu a jugé en ma faveur, et il a aussi exaucé ma voix, et m'a donné un fils; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Dan.

7 And Bilhah, Rachel's maid, conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son.

Et Bilha, servante de Rachel, conçut encore, et enfanta un second fils à Jacob.

8 And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.

Et Rachel dit: J'ai fortement lutté contre ma sœur, aussi j'ai eu la victoire; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Nephthali.

9 When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah, her maid, and gave her Jacob for a wife.

Alors Léa voyant qu'elle avait cessé de faire des enfants, prit Zilpa sa servante, et la donna à Jacob pour femme.

10 And Zilpah, Leah's maid, bore Jacob a son.

Et Zilpa, servante de Léa, enfanta un fils à Jacob.

11 And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.

Et Léa dit: Une troupe est arrivée, c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Gad.

12 And Zilpah, Leah's maid, bore Jacob a second son.

Et Zilpa, servante de Léa, enfanta un second fils à Jacob.

13 And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.

Et Léa dit: C'est pour me rendre heureuse; car les filles me diront bienheureuse; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Aser.

14 And Reuben went, in the days of wheat-harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son's mandrakes.

Or Ruben étant sorti au temps de la moisson des blés, trouva des mandragores aux champs, et les apporta à Léa sa mère; et Rachel dit à Léa: Donne-moi, je te prie, des mandragores de ton fils.

15 And she said to her, [Is it] a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son's mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes.

Et elle lui répondit: Est-ce peu de chose de m'avoir oté mon mari, que tu m'otes aussi les mandragores de mon fils? Et Rachel dit: Qu'il couche donc cette nuit avec toi, pour les mandragores de ton fils.

16 And Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in to me; for surely I have hired thee with my son's mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.

Et quand Jacob revint des champs au soir, Léa sortit au-devant de lui, et lui dit: Tu viendras vers moi; car je t'ai loué pour les mandragores de mon fils; et il coucha avec elle cette nuit-là.

17 And God hearkened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob the fifth son.

Et Dieu exauça Léa, et elle conçut, et enfanta à Jacob un cinquième fils.

18 And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.

Et elle dit: Dieu m'a récompensée, parce que j'ai donné ma servante à mon mari; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Issacar.

19 And Leah conceived again, and bore Jacob the sixth son.

Et Léa conçut encore, et enfanta un sixième fils à Jacob.

20 And Leah said, God hath endowed me [with] a good dower; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.

Et Léa dit: Dieu m'a donné un bon douaire; maintenant mon mari demeurera avec moi: car je lui ai enfanté six enfants; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Zabulon.

21 And afterwards she bore a daughter, and called her name Dinah.

Puis elle enfanta une fille, et la nomma Dina.

22 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and rendered her fruitful.

Et Dieu se souvint de Rachel, et Dieu l'ayant exaucée, ouvrit sa matrice.

23 And she conceived, and bore a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:

Alors elle conçut, et enfanta un fils, et dit: Dieu a oté mon opprobre.

24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD will add to me another son.

Et elle le nomma Joseph, en disant: Que l'Eternel m'ajoute un autre fils!

25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country.

Et il arriva qu'après que Rachel eut enfanté Joseph, Jacob dit à Laban: Donne-moi mon congé, et je m'en retournerai en mon lieu, et en mon pays.

26 Give [me] my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.

Donne-moi mes femmes et mes enfants, pour lesquels je t'ai servi, et je m'en irai; car tu sais de quelle manière je t'ai servi.

27 And Laban said to him, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thine eyes, [tarry: for] I have learned by experience, that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.

Et Laban lui répondit: [Ecoute], je te prie, si j'ai trouvé grâce devant toi; j'ai reconnu que l'Eternel m'a béni à cause de toi.

28 And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give [it].

Il lui dit aussi: Marque-moi quel salaire [tu veux], et je te le donnerai.

29 And he said to him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle were with me.

Et il lui répondit: Tu sais comment je t'ai servi, et ce qu'est devenu ton bétail avec moi.

30 For [it was] little which thou hadst before I [came], and it is [now] increased to a multitude; and the Lord hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for my own house also?

Car ce que tu avais avant que je vinsse, était peu de chose, mais il est beaucoup accru, et l'Eternel t'a béni à mon arrivée; et maintenant, quand ferai-je aussi [quelque chose] pour ma maison?

31 And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed [and] keep thy flock:

Et [Laban] lui dit: Que te donnerai-je? Et Jacob répondit: Tu ne me donneras rien; mais je paîtrai encore tes troupeaux, et je les garderai, si tu fais ceci pour moi:

32 I will pass through all thy flock to-day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and [of such] shall be my hire.

Que je passe aujourd'hui parmi tes troupeaux, [et] qu'on mette à part toutes les brebis picotées et tachetées, et tous les agneaux roux, et les chèvres tachetées et picotées; et ce sera là mon salaire.

33 So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that [is] not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be accounted stolen with me.

Et désormais ma justice rendra témoignage pour moi; car elle viendra sur mon salaire, en ta présence; et tout ce qui ne sera point picoté ou tacheté entre les chèvres, et roux entre les agneaux, sera tenu pour un larcin, s'il est trouvé chez moi.

34 And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.

Et Laban dit: Voici, qu'il te soit fait comme tu l'as dit.

35 And he removed that day the he-goats that were ring-streaked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted; every one that had [some] white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave [them] into the hands of his sons.

Et en ce jour-là il sépara les boucs marquetés et picotés, et toutes les chèvres picotées et tachetées, toutes celles où il y avait du blanc, et tous les agneaux roux, et il les mit entre les mains de ses fils.

36 And he set three days' journey between himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.

Et il mit l'espace de trois journées de chemin entre lui et Jacob; et Jacob paissait le reste des troupeaux de Laban.

37 And Jacob took to him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut-tree; and peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which [was] in the rods.

Mais Jacob prit des verges fraîches, de peuplier, de coudrier, et de châtaignier, et en ôta les écorces en découvrant le blanc qui était aux verges.

38 And he set the rods, which he had peeled, before the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs, when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.

Et il mit les verges qu'il avait pelées, au devant des troupeaux, dans les auges, et dans les abreuvoirs où les brebis venaient boire; et elles entraient en chaleur quand elles venaient boire.

39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ring-streaked, speckled, and spotted.

Les brebis donc entraient en chaleur à la vue des verges, et elles faisaient des brebis marquetées, picotées, et tachetées.

40 And Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks towards the ring-streaked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban: and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not with Laban's cattle.

Et Jacob partagea les agneaux, et fit que les brebis du troupeau de Laban avaient en vue les brebis marquetées, et tout ce qui était roux; et il mit ses troupeaux à part, et ne les mit point auprès des troupeaux de Laban.

41 And it came to pass, whenever the stronger cattle conceived, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.

Et il arrivait que toutes les fois que les brebis hâtives entraient en chaleur, Jacob mettait les verges dans les abreuvoirs devant les yeux du troupeau, afin qu'elles entrassent en chaleur en regardant les verges.

42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put [them] not in: so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.

Mais quand les brebis étaient tardives, il ne les mettait point; et les tardives appartenaient à Laban, et les hâtives à Jacob.

43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had many cattle, and maid-servants, and men-servants, and camels, and asses.

Ainsi cet homme s'accrut fort [en biens], et eut de grands troupeaux, des servantes, et des serviteurs, des chameaux, et des ânes.
