Genesis 24
1 And Abraham was old [and] far advanced in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.
Or Abraham devint vieux [et] fort avancé en âge; et l'Eternel avait béni Abraham en toutes choses.
2 And Abraham said to his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:
Et Abraham dit au plus ancien des serviteurs de sa maison, qui avait le gouvernement de tout ce qui lui appartenait: Mets, je te prie, ta main sous ma cuisse:
3 And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that thou wilt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I dwell:
Et je te ferai jurer par l'Eternel, le Dieu des cieux, et le Dieu de la terre, que tu ne prendras point de femme pour mon fils, d'entre les filles des Cananéens, parmi lesquels j'habite.
4 But thou shalt go to my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.
Mais tu t'en iras en mon pays et vers mes parents, et tu y prendras une femme pour mon fils Isaac.
5 And the servant said to him, It may be the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land: must I needs bring thy son again to the land from whence thou camest?
Et ce serviteur lui [répondit]: Peut-être que la femme ne voudra point me suivre en ce pays; me faudra-t-il nécessairement ramener ton fils au pays d'où tu es sorti?
6 And Abraham said to him, Beware that thou bring not my son thither again.
Abraham lui dit: Garde-toi bien d'y ramener mon fils.
7 The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, To thy seed I will give this land: he will send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife for my son from thence.
L'Eternel, le Dieu des cieux, qui m'a pris de la maison de mon père, et du pays de ma parenté, et qui m'a parlé, et juré, en disant: Je donnerai à ta postérité ce pays-ci, enverra lui-même son Ange devant toi, et tu prendras de là une femme pour mon fils.
8 And if the woman shall not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath; only bring not my son thither again.
Que si la femme ne veut pas te suivre, tu seras quitte de ce serment que je te fais faire. Quoi qu'il en soit, ne ramène point là mon fils.
9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning that matter.
Et le serviteur mit la main sous la cuisse d'Abraham son Seigneur, et lui jura suivant ces choses-là.
10 And the servant took ten camels, of the camels of his master, and departed; (for all the goods of his master [were] in his hands: ) and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.
Alors le serviteur prit dix chameaux d'entre les chameaux de son maître, et s'en alla: car il avait tout le bien de son maître en son pouvoir. Il partit donc, et s'en alla en Mésopotamie, à la ville de Nacor.
11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water, at the time of the evening, the time when women go out to draw [water]:
Et il fit reposer les chameaux sur leurs genoux hors de la ville, près d'un puits d'eau, sur le soir, au temps que sortent celles qui vont puiser [de l'eau].
12 And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, prosper me this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
Et il dit: Ô Eternel! Dieu de mon Seigneur Abraham; fais que j'aie [une heureuse] rencontre aujourd'hui; et sois favorable à mon Seigneur Abraham.
13 Behold, I stand [here] by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
Voici, je me tiendrai près de la fontaine d'eau, et les filles des gens de la ville sortiront pour puiser de l'eau.
14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: [let the same be] she [that] thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and by that shall I know that thou hast shown kindness to my master.
Fais donc que la jeune fille à laquelle je dirai: Baisse, je te prie, ta cruche, afin que je boive, et qui me répondra: Bois, et même je donnerai à boire à tes chameaux; soit celle que tu as destinée à ton serviteur Isaac, et je connaîtrai à cela que tu as été favorable à mon Seigneur.
15 And it came to pass before he had done speaking, that behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
Et il arriva qu'avant qu'il eût achevé de parler, voici Rébecca fille de Béthuel, fils de Milca, femme de Nacor, frère d'Abraham, sortait ayant sa cruche sur son épaule.
16 And the damsel [was] very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
Et la jeune fille était très-belle à voir, et vierge, et nul homme ne l'avait connue. Elle descendit donc à la fontaine, et comme elle remontait après avoir rempli sa cruche,
17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water from thy pitcher.
Le serviteur courut au-devant d'elle, et lui dit: Donne-moi, je te prie, un peu à boire de l'eau de ta cruche.
18 And she said, Drink, my lord. And she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
Et elle lui dit: Mon Seigneur, bois. Et ayant incontinent abaissé sa cruche sur sa main, elle lui donna à boire.
19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw [water] for thy camels also, till they have done drinking.
Et après qu'elle eut achevé de lui donner à boire, elle dit: J'en puiserai aussi pour tes chameaux, jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient achevé de boire.
20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw [water], and drew for all his camels.
Et ayant vidé promptement sa cruche dans l'auge, elle courut encore au puits pour puiser de [l'eau], et elle en puisa pour tous ses chameaux.
21 And the man, wondering at her, held his peace, to know whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous, or not.
Et cet homme s'étonnait d'elle, [considérant], sans dire mot, pour savoir si l'Eternel aurait fait prospérer son voyage, ou non.
22 And it came to pass as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden ear-ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten [shekels] weight of gold;
Et quand les chameaux eurent achevé de boire, cet homme prit une bague d'or, du poids d'un demi-[sicle], et deux bracelets [pour mettre] sur les mains de cette [fille], pesant dix [sicles] d'or.
23 And said, Whose daughter [art] thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room [in] thy father's house for us to lodge in?
Et il lui dit: De qui es-tu fille? Je te prie, fais-le moi savoir; n'y a-t-il point dans la maison de ton père de lieu pour nous loger?
24 And she said to him, I [am] the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.
Et elle lui répondit: Je suis fille de Béthuel, fils de Milca, qu'elle a enfanté à Nacor.
25 She said moreover to him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.
Et elle lui dit aussi: Il y a chez nous beaucoup de paille et de fourrage, et de la place pour loger.
26 And the man bowed his head, and worshipped the LORD.
Et cet homme s'inclina et se prosterna devant l'Eternel:
27 And he said, Blessed [be] the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left my master destitute of his mercy and his truth: I [being] in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren.
Et dit: Béni soit l'Eternel, le Dieu de mon Seigneur Abraham, qui n'a point cessé d'exercer sa gratuité et sa vérité envers mon Seigneur: et lors que j'étais en chemin, l'Eternel m'a conduit en la maison des frères de mon Seigneur.
28 And the damsel ran, and told these things to her mother's house.
Et la jeune fille courut, et rapporta toutes ces choses en la maison de sa mère.
29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name [was] Laban: and Laban ran out to the man, to the well.
Or Rébecca avait un frère nommé Laban, qui courut dehors vers cet homme près de la fontaine.
30 And it came to pass when he saw the ear-ring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spoke the man to me; that he came to the man; and behold, he stood by the camels at the well.
Car aussitôt qu'il eut vu la bague et les bracelets aux mains de sa sœur, et qu'il eut entendu les paroles de Rébecca sa sœur, qui avait dit: Cet homme m'a ainsi parlé, il le vint trouver; et voici, il était près des chameaux vers la fontaine.
31 And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; why standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
Et il lui dit: Entre, béni de l'Eternel; pourquoi te tiens-tu dehors? J'ai préparé la maison, et un lieu pour tes chameaux.
32 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that [were] with him.
L'homme donc entra dans la maison, et on désharnacha les chameaux, et on leur donna de la paille et du fourrage; et [on apporta] de l'eau, tant pour laver ses pieds, que les pieds de ceux qui étaient avec lui:
33 And there was set [food] before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told my errand. And he said, Speak on.
Et on lui présenta à manger. Mais il dit: Je ne mangerai point, que je n'aie dit ce que j'ai à dire. Et [Laban] dit: Parle.
34 And he said, I [am] Abraham's servant.
Il dit donc: Je suis serviteur d'Abraham.
35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly, and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and camels, and asses.
Or l'Eternel a béni abondamment mon Seigneur, et il est devenu grand; car il lui a donné des brebis, des bœufs, de l'argent, de l'or, des serviteurs, des servantes, des chameaux, et des ânes.
36 And Sarah, my master's wife, bore a son to my master when she was old: and to him hath he given all that he hath.
Et Sara, femme de mon Seigneur, a enfanté dans sa vieillesse à mon Seigneur un fils, auquel il a donné tout ce qu'il a.
37 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:
Et mon Seigneur m'a fait jurer, en disant: Tu ne prendras point de femme pour mon fils d'entre les filles des Cananéens au pays desquels je demeure,
38 But thou shalt go to my father's house, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son.
Mais tu iras à la maison de mon père, et vers ma parenté, et tu y prendras une femme pour mon fils.
39 And I said to my master, It may be the woman will not follow me.
Et je dis à mon Seigneur: Peut-être que la femme ne me suivra pas.
40 And he said to me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father's house.
Et il me répondit: L'Eternel, devant la face duquel j'ai vécu, enverra son Ange avec toi, et fera prospérer ton voyage, et tu prendras pour mon fils une femme de ma parenté, et de la maison de mon père.
41 Then shalt thou be clear from [this] my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee [one], thou shalt be clear from my oath.
Si tu vas vers ma parenté, tu seras alors quitte de l'exécration du serment que je te fais faire: et si on ne te la donne pas, tu seras quitte de l'exécration du serment que je te fais faire.
42 And I came this day to the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou dost prosper my way which I go:
Je suis donc venu aujourd'hui à la fontaine, et j'ai dit: Ô Eternel! Dieu de mon Seigneur Abraham, si maintenant tu fais prospérer le voyage que j'ai entrepris:
43 Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw [water], and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;
Voici, je me tiendrai près de la fontaine d'eau. Qu'il arrive donc que la fille qui sortira pour y puiser, et à laquelle je dirai: Donne-moi, je te prie, un peu à boire de l'eau de ta cruche;
44 And she saith to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: [let] the same [be] the woman whom the LORD hath pointed out for my master's son.
Et qui me répondra: Bois, et même j'[en] puiserai pour tes chameaux, que celle-là soit la femme que l'Eternel a destinée au fils de mon Seigneur.
45 And before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down to the well, and drew [water]: and I said to her, Let me drink, I pray thee.
Or avant que j'eusse achevé de parler en mon cœur, voici, Rébecca est sortie, ayant sa cruche sur son épaule, et est descendue à la fontaine, et a puisé de l'eau; et je lui ai dit: Donne-moi, je te prie, à boire.
46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her [shoulder], and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.
Et incontinent elle a abaissé sa cruche de dessus [son épaule], et m'a dit: Bois, et même je donnerai à boire à tes chameaux. J'ai donc bu, et elle a aussi donné à boire aux chameaux.
47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter [art] thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him: and I put the ear-ring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.
Puis je l'ai interrogée, en disant: De qui es-tu fille? Elle a répondu: Je suis fille de Béthuel, fils de Nacor, que Milca lui a enfanté. Alors je lui ai mis une bague sur le front, et des bracelets en ses mains.
48 And I bowed my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter for his son.
Je me suis incliné et prosterné devant l'Eternel, et j'ai béni l'Eternel, le Dieu de mon Seigneur Abraham, qui m'a conduit par le vrai chemin, afin que je prisse la fille du frère de mon Seigneur pour son fils.
49 And now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
Maintenant donc, si vous voulez user de gratuité et de vérité envers mon Seigneur, déclarez-le-moi; sinon, déclarez-le-moi aussi; et je me tournerai à droite ou à gauche.
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak to thee bad or good.
Et Laban et Bethuel répondirent, en disant: Cette affaire est procédée de l'Eternel; nous ne te pouvons dire ni bien ni mal.
51 Behold, Rebekah [is] before thee, take [her], and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the LORD hath spoken.
Voici Rébecca est entre tes mains, prends-la et t'en va; et qu'elle soit la femme du fils de ton Seigneur, comme l'Eternel en a parlé.
52 And it came to pass, that when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, [bowing himself] to the earth.
Et il arriva qu'aussitôt que le serviteur d'Abraham eut ouï leurs paroles, il se prosterna en terre devant l'Eternel.
53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave [them] to Rebekah: He gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.
Et le serviteur tira des bagues d'argent et d'or, et des habits, et les donna à Rébecca. Il donna aussi des présents exquis à son frère et à sa mère.
54 And they ate and drank, he and the men that [were] with him, and tarried all night; and they rose in the morning, and he said, Send me away to my master.
Puis ils mangèrent et burent, lui et les gens qui étaient avec lui, et y logèrent cette nuit-là; et quand ils se furent levés de bon matin, il dit: Renvoyez-moi à mon Seigneur.
55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us [a few] days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.
Et le frère et la mère lui dirent: Que la fille demeure avec nous quelques jours, au moins dix jours, après quoi elle s'en ira.
56 And he said to them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way: send me away, that I may go to my master.
Et il leur dit: Ne me retardez point, puisque l'Eternel a fait prospérer mon voyage, renvoyez-moi, afin que je m'en aille à mon Seigneur.
57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and inquire at her mouth.
Alors ils dirent: Appelons la fille, et demandons-lui une réponse de sa propre bouche.
58 And they called Rebekah, and said to her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.
Ils appelèrent donc Rébecca, et lui dirent: Veux-tu aller avec cet homme? Et elle répondit: J'irai.
59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.
Ainsi ils laissèrent aller Rébecca leur sœur, et sa nourrice, avec le serviteur d'Abraham, et ses gens.
60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, Thou [art] our sister, be thou [the mother] of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those who hate them.
Et ils bénirent Rébecca, et lui dirent: Tu es notre sœur; sois fertile par mille millions [de générations], et que ta postérité possède la porte de ses ennemis.
61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
Alors Rébecca se leva avec ses servantes, et elles montèrent sur les chameaux, et suivirent cet homme. Ce serviteur donc prit Rébecca, et s'en alla.
62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the south country.
Or Isaac revenait du puits du Vivant qui me voit, et il demeurait au pays du Midi.
63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at evening: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and behold, the camels [were] coming.
Et Isaac était sorti aux champs sur le soir pour prier; et levant ses yeux il regarda, et voici des chameaux qui venaient.
64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she alighted from the camel.
Rébecca aussi levant ses yeux vit Isaac, et descendit de dessus le chameau;
65 For she [had] said to the servant, What man [is] this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant [had] said, It [is] my master: therefore she took a vail and covered herself.
Car elle avait dit au serviteur: Qui est cet homme qui marche dans les champs au-devant de nous? Et le serviteur avait répondu: C'[est] mon Seigneur; et elle prit un voile, et s'en couvrit.
66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.
Et le serviteur raconta à Isaac toutes les choses qu'il avait faites.
67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's [death].
Alors Isaac mena Rébecca dans la tente de Sara sa mère, et il la prit pour sa femme, et l'aima. Ainsi Isaac se consola après [la mort de] sa mère.
