Exodus 22
1 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
Si quelqu’un dérobe un bœuf ou une brebis, puis égorge ou vend l’animal, il donnera cinq pièces de gros bétail en paiement du boeuf, quatre de menu bétail pour la brebis.
2 If a thief shall be found breaking through, and be smitten that he die, [there shall] no blood [be shed] for him.
"Si un voleur est pris sur le fait d’effraction, si on le frappe et qu’il meure, son sang ne sera point vengé.
3 If the sun shall have risen upon him, [there shall be] blood [shed] for him: [for] he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
Si le soleil a éclairé son délit, son sang serait vengé. Lui cependant doit réparer; et s’il ne le peut, il sera vendu pour son vol.
4 If the theft shall be certainly found in his hand alive, whether an ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.
Si le corps du délit est trouvé entre ses mains, intact, soit boeuf, soit âne ou brebis, il paiera le double.
5 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field: of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard shall he make restitution.
"Si un homme fourrage un champ ou un vignoble en faisant pâturer son bétail sur les terres d’autrui, il paiera le dégât du meilleur de son champ ou de sa vigne.
6 If fire shall break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field shall be consumed; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
"Si le feu, en s’étendant, gagne des buissons et dévore une meule de blé, ou la moisson ou le champ d’autrui, l’auteur de l’incendie sera tenu de payer.
7 If a man shall deliver to his neighbor money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief shall be found, let him pay double.
"Si quelqu’un donne en garde à un autre de l’argent ou des effets et qu’ils disparaissent de la maison de cet homme, si le voleur est découvert, il paiera le double.
8 If the thief shall not be found, then the master of the house shall be brought to the judges, [to see] whether he hath put his hand to his neighbor's goods.
Si l’on ne trouve point le voleur, le maître de la maison viendra jurer au tribunal qu’il n’a point porté la main sur la chose d’autrui.
9 For all manner of trespass, [whether it be] for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, [or] for any manner of lost thing which [another] challengeth to be his: the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; [and] he whom the judges shall condemn, shall pay double to his neighbor.
Quel que soit l’objet du délit, boeuf, âne, menue bête, vêtement, toute chose perdue qu’on affirme être sienne, la contestation des deux parties sera déférée au tribunal: celui que les juges condamneront paiera le double à l’autre.
10 If a man shall deliver to his neighbor an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast to keep; and it shall die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing [it]:
"Si quelqu’un donne en garde à un autre un âne, ou un boeuf, ou une pièce de menu bétail, un animal quelconque et que celui-ci meure, ou soit estropié ou pris de force, sans que personne l’ait vu,
11 [Then] shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand to his neighbor's goods; and the owner of it shall accept of it, and he shall not make restitution.
un serment solennel interviendra entre les parties, comme quoi l’accusé n’a point porté atteinte à la chose de son prochain; le propriétaire acceptera ce serment et l’autre ne paiera point.
12 And if it shall be stolen from him, he shall make restitution to the owner of it.
Mais si la bête lui avait été dérobée, il indemnisera le propriétaire.
13 If it shall be torn in pieces; [then] let him bring it [for] witness, [and] he shall not make good that which was torn.
Si elle avait été mise en pièces, qu’il en produise la preuve; il ne paiera point pour la bête mise en pièces.
14 And if a man shall borrow [aught] of his neighbor, and it shall be hurt, or die, the owner of it [being] not with it, he shall surely make [it] good.
"Si quelqu’un emprunte à un autre un animal et que celui-ci soit estropié ou meure, si le propriétaire est absent, l’autre est tenu de payer.
15 [But] if the owner of it shall [be] with it, he shall not make [it] good: if it [be] a hired [thing], it came for his hire.
Si le propriétaire se trouvait là, il ne paiera point. Si la bête était louée, il l’a eue sous le bénéfice de cette location.
16 And if a man shall entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.
"Si un homme séduit une vierge non encore fiancée et cohabite avec elle, il devra l’acquérir pour épouse.
17 If her father shall utterly refuse to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the dower of virgins.
Que si son père refuse de la lui accorder, il paiera la somme fixée pour la dot des vierges.
18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
"La sorcière, tu ne la laisseras point vivre.
19 Whoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death.
Quiconque aura eu commerce avec un animal sera mis à mort.
20 He that sacrificeth to [any] god, save to the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.
"Celui qui sacrifie aux dieux, sauf à l’Éternel exclusivement, sera voué à la mort.
21 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
Tu ne contristeras point l’étranger ni ne le molesteras; car vous-mêmes avez été étrangers en Egypte.
22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.
N’Humiliez jamais la veuve ni l’orphelin.
23 If thou shalt afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all to me, I will surely hear their cry:
Si tu l’humiliais, sache que, quand sa plainte s’élèvera vers moi, assurément j’entendrai cette plainte
24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
et mon courroux s’enflammera et je vous ferai périr par le glaive et alors vos femmes aussi deviendront veuves et vos enfants orphelins.
25 If thou shalt lend money to [any of] my people [that is] poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as a usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.
"Si tu prêtes de l’argent à quelqu’un de mon peuple, au pauvre qui est avec toi, ne sois point à son égard comme un créancier; n’exigez point de lui des intérêts.
26 If thou shalt at all take thy neighbor's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it to him by the setting of the sun.
Si tu saisis, comme gage, le manteau de ton prochain, au soleil couchant tu devras le lui rendre.
27 For that [is] his only covering, it [is] his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth to me, that I will hear; for I [am] gracious.
Car c’est là sa seule couverture, c’est le vêtement de son corps, comment abritera-t-il son sommeil? Or, s’il se plaint à moi, je l’écouterai, car je suis compatissant.
28 Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.
"N’Outrage point l’autorité suprême et ne maudis point le chef de ton peuple.
29 Thou shalt not delay [to offer] the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the first-born of thy sons shalt thou give to me.
Ton abondance et ta liqueur, ne diffère pas à les offrir; le premier-né de tes fils, fais m’en hommage.
30 Likewise shalt thou do with thy oxen, [and] with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day thou shalt give it to me.
Ainsi feras-tu à l’égard de ton gros et de ton menu bétail: le premier-né restera sept jours avec sa mère, le huitième jour tu me le livreras.
31 And ye shall be holy men to me: neither shall ye eat [any] flesh [that is] torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.
Vous devez aussi être des hommes saints devant moi: vous ne mangerez donc point la chair d’un animal déchiré dans les champs, vous l’abandonnerez aux chiens.
