Ecclesiastes 1
1 The words of the preacher, the son of David, king of Jerusalem.
दावीद के पुत्र, येरूशलेम में राजा, दार्शनिक के वचन:
2 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher, vanity of vanities; all [is] vanity.
“बेकार ही बेकार!” दार्शनिक का कहना है. “बेकार ही बेकार! बेकार है सब कुछ.”
3 What profit hath a man of all his labor, which he taketh under the sun?
सूरज के नीचे मनुष्य द्वारा किए गए कामों से उसे क्या मिलता है?
4 [One] generation passeth away, and [another] generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
एक पीढ़ी खत्म होती है और दूसरी आती है, मगर पृथ्वी हमेशा बनी रहती है.
5 The sun also riseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
सूरज उगता है, सूरज डूबता है, और बिना देर किए अपने निकलने की जगह पर पहुंच दोबारा उगता है.
6 The wind goeth towards the south, and turneth about to the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to its circuits.
दक्षिण की ओर बहती हुई हवा उत्तर दिशा में मुड़कर निरंतर घूमते हुए अपने घेरे में लौट आती है.
7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea [is] not full; to the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
हालांकि सारी नदियां सागर में मिल जाती हैं, मगर इससे सागर भर नहीं जाता. नदियां दोबारा उसी जगह पर बहने लगती हैं, जहां वे बह रही थीं.
8 All things [are] full of labor; man cannot utter [it]: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
इतना थकाने वाला है सभी कुछ, कि मनुष्य के लिए इसका वर्णन संभव नहीं. आंखें देखने से तृप्त नहीं होतीं, और न कान सुनने से संतुष्ट.
9 The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which shall be done: and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun.
जो हो चुका है, वही है जो दोबारा होगा, और जो किया जा चुका है, वही है जो दोबारा किया जाएगा; इसलिये धरती पर नया कुछ भी नहीं.
10 Is there [any] thing of which it may be said, See, this [is] new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
क्या कुछ ऐसा है जिसके बारे में कोई यह कह सके, “इसे देखो! यह है नया?” यह तो हमसे पहले के युगों से होता आ रहा है.
11 [There is] no remembrance of former [things]; neither shall there be [any] remembrance of [things] that are to come with [those] that shall come after.
कुछ याद नहीं कि पहले क्या हुआ, और न यह कि जो होनेवाला है. और न ही उनके लिए कोई याद बची रह जाएगी जो उनके भी बाद आनेवाले हैं.
12 I the preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
मैं, दार्शनिक, येरूशलेम में इस्राएल का राजा रहा हूं.
13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all [things] that are done under heaven: this grievous labor hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised with it.
धरती पर जो सारे काम किए जाते हैं, मैंने बुद्धि द्वारा उन सभी कामों के जांचने और अध्ययन करने में अपना मन लगाया. यह बड़े दुःख का काम है, जिसे परमेश्वर ने मनुष्य के लिए इसलिये ठहराया है कि वह इसमें उलझा रहे!
14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.
मैंने इन सभी कामों को जो इस धरती पर किए जाते हैं, देखा है, और मैंने यही पाया कि यह बेकार और हवा से झगड़ना है.
15 [That which is] crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
जो टेढ़ा है, उसे सीधा नहीं किया जा सकता; और जो है ही नहीं, उसकी गिनती कैसे हो सकती है.
16 I communed with my own heart, saying, Lo, I have come to great estate, and have gained more wisdom than all [they] that have been before me in Jerusalem: and my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
“मैं सोच रहा था, येरूशलेम में मुझसे पहले जितने भी राजा हुए हैं, मैंने उन सबसे ज्यादा बुद्धि पाई है तथा उन्नति की है; मैंने बुद्धि और ज्ञान के धन का अनुभव किया है.”
17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
मैंने अपना हृदय बुद्धि को और बावलेपन और मूर्खता को जानने में लगाया, किंतु मुझे अहसास हुआ कि यह भी हवा से झगड़ना ही है.
18 For in much wisdom [is] much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
क्योंकि ज्यादा बुद्धि में बहुत दुःख होता है; ज्ञान बढ़ाने से दर्द भी बढ़ता है.
